How to build a simple multi-contributor news site

Hi James!
(This post is a reply to a question on how to build a simple multi-contributor news site, but I felt better posting thiswriteup as a new node.)

I did something like the thing you ask for a few months ago, when doing some hands-on web stuff with Swedish journalist students.
It would take some time and effort to explain everything I did in detail, but you could try the following list and ask more questions if you get stuck.

Drupal base - v6 or v5

Hi there,

I am putting together a website for a college newspaper. I am set on using Drupal as my CMS, but it appears that many newspaper-related modules have not been updated for Drupal 6 -- most notably, Panels. Is there a way to use these modules on Drupal 6, or should I base my site on Drupal 5. I'm a relatively advanced developer but am new to Drupal - I apologize if I have overlooked something.

Thanks!

Image repository in web-to-print environment

Having images stored in CMS is a great benefit that web-to-print provides for it keeps images centralized. However, image originals are big and tend to add up quickly so hosting disk space may become an issue. We came up with following options

1) Only web version of image and the name of original file are stored in CMS. The original itself is stored offline in some predefined directory. While generating export XML to be used by InDesign, CMS uses the name of original image and inDesign gets it from its offline location.

Has a tree structure, root, L1, L2,L3. Parts of the categories are repetitive.

I have put together a real estate site for the newspaper I am employed at. It is all done in drupal and looks great in FireFox and Safari but I'm getting some weird spacing issues in IE. I can't seem to find out what is causing this bug. Could anyone take a look at the site in FireFox with FireBug enable and give any suggestions.

The site is:

3 Customers with more than 1000 users in production deployments needed for Gartner social software market assessment

I am working on submitting the Drupal survey response for Gartner's latest research report. We are looking for three customers with 1000 users in a production deployment. Ideally these would be successful deployments and the customer would be willing to have a quick chat with myself to ensure we are providing the right customer reference. Good customer references are the single biggest factor in impacting report recommendations.

From the Gartner Social software market survey

We got interviews from:

How to show daily news

I want to show the news on daily basis. I tried to use the Daily module, but the module only allow one news per day. I want to show all the news posted by the users for the given date, with the calender control (like the one provided with the Daily module) and user should be able to navigate between the news day-wise with the help of that calender control.

Can anyone tell me how can I implement this functionality.

Thanks & Regards,
Prashant

Issues With New Server Configuration

Hi all,

We are evaluating a new server configuration, looking at going from a single server setup to a dual server setup (web server/database).

Our existing server is a Dell PowerEdge 850 with 10K RPM drive (not sure what drive type/RAID config), 1 GB RAM, and a dual-core Pentium 3 GHz processor, 2MB cache.

The new servers are both Sun X2100 M2, 10K RPM SATA RAID 5, 4GB RAM, and a dual-core AMD Opteron 2.6 GHz processor, 1 MB cache.

Bad link for Drupal "Learning Resources"?

I tried to check out the Drupal "Learning Resources" wiki page linked at the top of the Newspapers on Drupal group and was directed to a blank wiki page instead. Anyone know what's going on with this? I hope the page wasn't deleted. If so, does anyone have access to restore it?

Thanks.

New to drupal, not a programmer/developer

I want to start a business directory to generate revenue to improve some existing newspaper sites (please forgive me for not providing specifics on the sites themselves) and have been recommended to use drupal for not only the business directory but also content management.

The issue, I'm not a programmer or developer and I'm concerned I won't have the technical expertise to get this done.

That having been said, if I had to hire someone to develop the server, load the software, design the templates, etc and get everything running, what kind of costs would I be looking at?

Could a good-sized Drupal newspaper site run on a cloud-based infrastructure?

We are currently looking at changing our hosting company so that we can ramp up our resources.

One of the options we looked at was Amazon's EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud). However, we backed away when our intial tests showed that transfer speed weren't very fast.

But, I was just wondering if anyone in the Newspaper on Drupal group has successfully trialled Cloud Computing and, if so, whether there were any tricks and traps if you wanted to run a good-sized Drupal newspaper site on a cloud-based infrastructure.

Cheers,

Geoff

How to set up a newspaper site

I work for a newspaper publisher that produces 9 weekly newspapers. I'm looking into using Drupal as a CMS for our web products. I read Building powerful and robust websites with Drupal 6 which helped me to understand how drupal works and to set up a site. I really like how the New York Observer is laid out and could use some help on setting up a newspaper site.

Below is a list of what I'd like to do and would really appreciate any pointers or suggestion you may have.

Best e-mail and SMS subscription modules?

Hi all. We're in the final stages of developing TheDigitel.com, a local news site, and I'm trying to decide on the best avenue to integrate e-mail and SMS subscriptions. Before I go installing a bunch on the test server, I thought I'd ask for your thoughts.

Ideally, we want to offer people the ability to subscribe to a daily or weekly digest (perhaps based of our RSS feed), or to subscribe to a particular topic (i.e. e-mail me when there's a new story tagged with "road development") or to say SMS me when there's a new top story or story tagged with "wreck".

Scholarships available for programmers to spend year studying journalism

A little off-topic, but it seems to me there could be a nice fit with this initiative– code tools for journalists while learning more about being a journalist: Still seeking coders interested in journalism.
