How we're handling images in news stories

David Johnson was wondering how we're handling images without getting sucked into the morass of img_assist and the various rich text editors. Our approach, which has some strengths (simple and idiot-proof) and some weaknesses (these images are not nodes), is as follows:

Both news stories and blogs are CCK content types. The key element is Emfield, more formaly known as the Embedded Media Field module. We use it with its close relatives Embedded Media Import, Embedded Media Thumbnail, Embedded Image Field and Embedded Video Field.

Paid Classifieds, any ideas?

I'm really making headway into having a very usable website here, and I hope I'm not bugging anyone by asking for some expert advice.

I'm wondering how other newspapers, using Drupal 6, are handling online classifieds?

I've noticed there doesn't seem to be a workable out of the box solution for classifieds, especially if one wanted to charge someone to upload a picture, charge by the line inch, etc... But with this many newspapers using Drupal, I figure someone out there has to have done this before, and I'm just wondering what their solution was.

Question about Byline

I'm wondering if anyone here can offer a little advice on handling something as simple as an author byline in our workflow.

Our reporters write their stories in NewsEditPro from MediaSpan, and later on in the day our editors drop those into our InDesign pages. Those same editors also handle uploading the stories to our website everynight. This leaves me with the problem of the story being entered by someone who didn't write it.

Is there a slick way to handle getting the right author name on a story?

Panels caching on d6

We're getting close to relaunching our site (information.dk - see http://drupal.org/information.dk) on Drupal 6. We're still using panels. This time it the SUPER panels3 for D6. However we have one concern and that is speed.

On d5 we used panels_preempt, but right now there seems to be no other cache for Panels 3 than Drupals page cache or panels3's simple cache. Have any of you got an alternative?

Uploading images that can be used inline in stories and elsewhere

I'm trying to set up a newspaper site that utilizes images well. I want to be able to upload images inline, but also use those same images elsewhere in galleries, etc...

Ideally, it would be best that the images are nodes.

There is a similar discussion on this that mentions using Node reference to accomplish this. Can someone walk me through how I can do this, if this is the best way to do this?

Also, I need the image to have a captions and photographer credits.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Configuring Views Blocks?

Is there a way to configure a Views block to not show the first story in a list?

Lets say, for example, I have a block set up to show all the stories in a given Taxonomy. But I want to exclude the first story from that list because I'm using that in a QuickTab, and I don't want redundancy.

Is there a way to set Views to show stories #2-10, and not story #1?

I appreciate any answers. I think I'm close to doing what I need to do with Drupal and only have a few more stumbling blocks to get around.

Theming a node several ways

Theming a node in the node.tpl.php only gives you to options, full page view or teaser! What do you do, if you want to theme the same node in several different ways depending on what region the node is shown in?

The thing I'm trying to do is, to have a node (an article) be a top story in the "Top story" region one day, and another story in another region the other. That is, I want to be able to theme a node differently depending on region.

I would like to do it in node.tpl.php, but as I see it, there are no variables available in a node that can tell you what region the node is in.

I'm a little lost and could use some direction

Maybe I'm just not getting it, and it's really simple, but I'm lost here.

Lets say I set up either a Category or a Taxonomy vocabulary for Sports. I have a node, we'll say it's node 10, which I have mapped as Sports.

How do I create a story, and get it to appear on just the Sports node? I'm beating my head up against a wall here, and I think I'm just missing what's probably a very simple answer.

Any help would be appreciated.

How we implemented a Classified Ads system in Ubercart 1/Drupal 5

We wrote code for Drupal 5/Ubercart 1.x to implement Classified Ads that could be purchased online and are then copied by Customer Service Reps for print publication. The parts that deal with print aspects could, of course, be skipped for an online-only system.

The basic elements:

  1. The custom module: 'our_classifieds.module'
  2. Product Nodes
    • Taxonomy
    • Attributes
  3. jQuery snippets
  4. Requires custom_price module (uc_custom_price)

Movie Show Times Service for a City Newspaper

Hey all,

I've seen a few services on the web that offer a widget or plugin to a web site to automatically populate the show times for a particular area. Fandango, to mention one.

The newspaper site I'm building needs to have film listings available on it, and currently, all we are doing is copying and pasting the show times from our paper into our CMS (non-Drupal as of now), and we need to update those same files each week for the films coming up. Ya, not a classy way to show events.
