We're trying to put together funding for a DrupalNYC sticker which we can give out at DrupalCon Chicago and the next DrupalNYC camp. A few of us discussed this after the last meetup and decided community sponsorship would the route to go. If the DrupalNYC community's been good to you, I think this is a good opportunity to promote the community and get a cool, high-quality sticker.
Please see this posts attachment for our current design (provided to me by forest, designed by wildfeed :). The goal is a high-quality sticker which is thick enough to block light behind it (from, say, a macbook apple logo) and with eyes that pop out. We need $1500 for about 1500 stickers.

great idea, but not a great sticker
I think this is a great idea, but, to revert to my old art director mode, I really don't think the sticker is on par with the quality and creativity of our past stickers. It's just so generic, does not say "nyc" in any way outside of the text; the color banding looks bad and the top being pure white seems off to me.
Did you know that
the sticker is a cut out so that those on a Mac will have it's eyes glow? We made the image grey scale because - well, NYC is pretty grey scale (well, at least the NYC i remember) - Also, I love the fact that it is unpretentious and quite general.

Whoa -- $1500 for 1500 stickers is highway robbery! There are way better prices out there, even for kiss cut stickers (which I think will get you the cut out eyes you're looking for.) Check out these sites:

Also, I have a plain old non-cut-out Druplicon sticker on my Macbook and the eyes glow through that, too, though it doesn't block all light behind it. But a vinyl sticker from one of the sites above should do it.
That said, not super psyched about the design; similarly to Eric, it doesn't really say NYC to me. I'd be more excited to get a bunch more of the subway Drupal stickers printed -- those are awesome and clever! And the design could possibly be refactored for a smaller/different sticker. (Oooh, they could look like the actual signs above the tracks...) But maybe I'd be more psyched about the proposed design if the dollar value didn't seem so disproportionate!

I like them both, but I'm really partial to the "subway" theme - maybe that theme could be refactored :) and incorporate features of the new one - I do like the greyscale treatment?
Echoing a previous comment (jackalope I think), I also have the "eyes" sticker over my Mac laptop glowlight and it works even without being cutout, if the kiss-cutting (die cut) is adding a lot of expense - I'd let that feature go if it does, since it works already without the die cut.
As a former printing professional, I can tell you that we should be looking at prices easily half that for 1500 stickers.

I love the sticker
Yeah maybe it doesn't have the sense of humor or grittyness of the past stickers but NYC is also sleek and upscale and I think the sticker has that vibe. Also, Drupal itself and the people who use it have all those facets which is why you see it on sites from the White House to funky music and art sites. I think there is room for this new one and I support it.

I guess I should have read Sip's original post before mine. DOH! I would def contrib. If we charge $1 for the sticker at DC2011 then hopefully we could make .40 on the dollar. That was a quick quote from stickerguy. So out of 1500 stickers that would generate $600.

Not to be all down on this, but I don't think we can really sell these stickers at DrupalCon. All the stickers at DrupalCon are free; they're publicity materials. I personally wouldn't buy one!
My tiny Drupal shop/worker cooperative is printing stickers as publicity materials to give away at DrupalCon; it's a great idea for visibility, but not a direct money making idea.

An idea
Someone mentioned a Drupal NYC Subway logo that had been done previously. I thought I found a picture of it here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/14162. All that said, I realize we're kind of hijacking other people's idea midway through by suggesting alternative designs... just want to acknowledge that this is happening and could be problematic.

I didn't really have anything specific in mind. This was just an idea that was worth sharing. I was thinking of a way to say NYC Drupal without saying "NYC Drupal" but I can definitely see how it could be incorporated into the existing/previous subway-themed sticker (in the square configuration or in the linear "bumper sticker" layout).

re: hijacking, thanks for pointing that out. I think the folks that put this idea out there should take whatever they want from the suggestions here and do what makes them happy. If it's all about the glowing eyes for those that use apple hardware, then go for it. I think they might have better luck with the fundraising if the image was different, but I hope they find the suggestions here interesting and an attempt to help them in their desire to promote the nyc drupal group, and not an attempt to hijack their idea.

Jack Aponte, I liked that logo so much I "hijacked" it myself for the GCD logo (with Aaron's permission, of course). I think it's an awesome idea. It scales well, too. If you don't like the sticker with the glowing eyes -> then submit a new design. Simple as that.
I love that design and all the hard work that Forest put into it. The first mock up he did of that sticker was about 1.5 years ago and he needed to sacrifice 5 or 6 stickers to get it just right.
In fact, I put down $100 just for THAT sticker with the cut out. Because I thought it was so cool. So, if we don't have that specific sticker - I want my money back.

I have to agree with johnvsc on this one. I also put a certain amount of money for the sticker mention on the post. If we decide to go with a different sticker I would also like my money back.
If we really want to have a different design then we probably should start a different thread for everyone to agree on the designs. But mind you it'll be really hard to get a new design, money, and stickers in 2 or 3 week for drupalcon.
I say if you like the sticker chip in (a lot :-p) if not, then maybe start another thread for designs for the next Drupal-NYC sticker. :-) but we probably shouldn't side track this specific post which is about sponsoring the sticker mention on the original post.
I third that
I put up cash for the glowsticker and that is the one I want. If others have a new idea for a sticker - then go for it. If I like it, I will support it as well. I wanted a new sticker. I missed out on the subway sticker and the batman sticker. I love those but I wasn't around when they came out. I can deal with that. This one is different and I love it as much as those old ones. I don't think we need to cling to those other designs and rehash them. We should keep making new ones. Lets keep Drupal fresh and always changing and inclusive of all our design visions and ideas. That is what will keep it us the forefront.

I chipped in too. I agree with ericduran that other stickers should be discussed elsewhere, which I would def like to join. My daughter loves stickers. I could totally see lots of Drupal stickers all over my house.

Just to let everyone know, the Druplicon "glowing eyes" stickers have been printed and shipped, and are expected to arrive in NYC tomorrow, Friday, March 4.
They are on a large pre-perforated roll and we will be having a perforation party on Saturday to tear them apart. Any NYC Drupalers attending the perforation party will be able to bring Drupal NYC stickers to Drupalcon next week for distribution.

Those stickers are just the coolest. I chipped in, and I'm sure glad I did. I missed the pre-DC party updates so I missed the awesome perf-party, but I bet it was a blast. It was really nifty to see people at DrupalCon using them for currency.
