I would also recommend cross-posting your interest to http://groups.drupal.org/drupalcon-north-american-regional-organizing-group

As I mentioned in the San Diego group thread, active community interest is definitely a key criteria in selecting a DrupalCon location, but there are numerous other factors that are considered as well.

Some of the factors that were considered for the 2012 North American DrupalCon selection process were:

  • Geographic distribution (have we recently held a DrupalCon in this area?)
  • Financial feasibility
  • Venue availability
  • Strength of local community
  • Potential for attendance growth
  • Size of local economy
  • Potential for Drupal market growth

Most of this research is done by representatives of the Drupal Association and/or DrupalCon, Inc., who use a common set of criteria to evaluate the suitability of several different cities for each upcoming DrupalCon. It may also be true that even if a particular city isn't selected for the next DrupalCon, it may still be kept in consideration for the following year.

It's also important to keep in mind that even with the assistance provided by the Drupal Association and DrupalCon, Inc., a lot of responsibility falls on the shoulders of the local team, which should expect to spend over a year in planning and thousands of hours of time if their city is selected to host DrupalCon.
