Getting back to it a month after DrupalCon!

DigitalRhino has opened up their space for the Playday!
They are located at: 330 west 38th street in Manhattan
Google Map : http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=330+west+38t...

Here are some changes based upon peoples response/ wishes and suggestions:

  1. Playdays will move around NYC
  2. Playdays will sometimes take place on either sat or sun -> I wanted to keep it sat or sun, but there are alot of conflicts
  3. Playdays will be in the afternoon :)
  4. We have a Beverage Budget! Drupal Connect is sponsoring all PlayDays! Whoo Hoo!
  5. I will be offering free training, help and advice during the playdays! Alot of people asked me to help out and, to be honest, now that I get to play ALOT more at my current gig - I can offer time to give back to everyone in terms of clearing roadblocks! Soooo, I will prepare and post a "lecture" for each Playday and then help out people in ways that I can.

Only local images are allowed.

Only local images are allowed.

(btw, i completely dropped the ball on the Digital Rhino logo -> I added a new one on Friday April 22 ... but the mess up was me (johnvsc) and not DR. DR did everything right ! )

Please post an "end" time so

Please post an "end" time so stragglers (or people with other things scheduled on the same day) know how late they can show up

Yeha -> there is

johnvsc's picture

that is what the "16" is in the date field

oic 11:00 - 16:00 let's not

decibel.places's picture

oic 11:00 - 16:00

let's not add user-friendly text that actually says 11 am to 4 pm or anything that makes things clearer

I admit I asked a dumb question but I did not expect a dumb answer

@LP thanks for the links,

@LP thanks for the links, they could have been explained better:

Any suggestions about d.o. & g.d.o. infrastucture: http://drupal.org/project/infrastructure
Formatting dates to be more user-friendly: http://drupal.org/node/1090538
Assume good faith when someone answers you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Assume_good_faith

I have also encountered snippy and seemingly hostile replies from project maintainers who are weary of dumb questions (like mine here) and some may not use English as a primary language. Further discussion has led to friendly relations.

I am all for polity and good faith, thank you for the encouragement!

Sorry for the Seemingly Snarky Response ...

But you took it the wrong way.

I have started to use 24hour time more and more because it makes things clearer. So, i looked at the post and thought -"oh, ok it says until 16, great". So, the information that you request was there -> just not in the way that was most optimum for you; as it was for me. But it was there.

To this point, I think that in terms of the Playdays -> the start time is way more important. Because it is open ended. The fact that there is a start time really is about the only thing that is structured. If you show up at 3:59 with a bunch of people who want to play - and everyone else is leaving - you are free to continue playing.

Also, if the folks at DR need to leave, we can move the playday to another location. It is very flexible.

I took it the way you meant

decibel.places's picture

I took it the way you meant it, that it should be obvious (and if I looked more carefully I would have seen the two times) - and I did not take offense, but your response got me thinking about why I was so easily confused.

But you bring up an important point - what is obvious to oneself - particularly a web professional - may not seem so obvious to others. That is why I take pains to be as clear as possible and use measurements that most people will understand - in the US we still call 24 hour time "military time" - and I know people who have trouble subtracting 12 from a number accurately. It could be argued, but not in the Drupal community - can we be so sure?

Based on past events

I wouldn't show up near the end time and expect a lot of people. Sometimes people leave on their own earlier. Best to be there when it starts.

Keep them coming

I have to work but keep them coming! Hopefully I'll make the next one....

Drupaling in NYC since 2009!

Hi Looking forward to Saturday.

I am not a pure DRUPAL newbie but I am getting back to it after a few years of being away from it. I am looking for basics doing some troubleshooting on install and modules for a few specific tasks, also advice on DRUPAL 6 vs DRUPAL 7. I did a small project with DRUPAL 5 about 3-4 years ago and also used Django for content management, SEO and ad network optimization for a local search service/website. I have gone to DRUPAL Camps back in the day but was late signing up so I am on the wait list for the one upcoming.

Just to give one specific on the project I am working on - I am looking to use the Biblio module for managing PubMed abstracts, and adding annotations on abstracts and available full-text resources in the biomedical literature. The reason I'm asking about DRUPAL 7 is the facilities for semantic web technologies. I have done a small project in the past with RDFa and know that RDFa integration is part of the most recent version of DRUPAL. I'm interested in learning about the best approaches for pulling in and managing data from XML/RDF resources from biomedical sites/services. There are specific resources I have identified.

Folks

Illing from last night - rain

I will try to attend future Drupal Playdate or Drupal Camp
events when I am healthy.

My introduction to Drupal 7 occurred while attending
Drupal 7 Release Party with Silicon Valley - January 7 2011

There were many Drupal supporters at that event which motivated me to join the

Drupal Wave.

Thank you again for
Hosting Drupal Playdate

AWESOME Playday Everyone!

johnvsc's picture

First of all, a HUGE thanks to George of Digital Rhino for opening his doors to the Playday. We are proud to announce that DR will be the ongoing home of the Playdays! We just have to find a Jamba Juice close by!

Second, another huge thanks to Robbie the Geek for stepping up to the plate and facilitating the day! (I planned on not making it.) We both co-maintain the Playdays from here on in.

We will post the date of the next Playday soon, most likely after DrupalCamp.

Thanks to everyone who came; I hope that the day was fruitful.

I'm honored :)

I think that it is awesome to co-organize / facilitate with you. These days are fun and together we can cover huge amounts of Drupal real estate you from end / crossing to the backend me back end crossing towards the front end :)

I love helping out and helping folks get their footing on the path to Drupal goodness :)

See everyone one Wed or Sat or the Next Wed or the Next Playday LOL :)

Robbie

Thanks!

Thank you so much for a terrific playdate. I learned an incredible amount in such a short time. And a very special thank you to Robbie, John & George. You helped pull back the curtain on some critical pieces of my project. I feel empowered to be able to see the light at the end of my tunnel. I have almost completed my home landing page and have figured out how to add all of slideshows since yesterday. Couldn't have done that without you!
