Plans?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

    • Intro to Omega 3.x (Getting started) ~ banghouse
    • Drush console ~ smerrill
    • Feather ~ zroger
    • Zemanta Module ~ tindizdarevic
  • 20 Min Talks
Have a topic that needs more then 5 minutes, we have slots of 20 minute talks. The basic idea is there are broader subjects or more detailed discussions this is the type of talk you would want to signup for, please mention 20 min talk when posting your talk description and the audience you expect to speak to.

    • SASS and the art of CSS - Snugug
    • workbench module ~ likewhoa
    • Drupal 7 AJAX ~ ericduran
    • Signup for a 20 talk slot
  • We will also have the New 2 Drupal BoF(birds of a feather). If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.

This may be a good time to test drive a presentation before the upcoming Drupal Camp NYC 10, also think about target audience and experience level of your presentation.

Signup Instructions!: 7 World Trade Center security checks your photo id against the list of attendees that we provide.

Last month's missed talks

robbiethegeek's picture

If you were one of the people that had a talk skipped because of time please post here I will add you first. I am pretty sure that we had 2 or 3 that got skipped.

To stop the running out of time we will start promptly at 6:30pm, and the introductions will be tightened up a lot. Please be aware that we want everyone to get introduced, and be introduced to the community, but we also need to get to the heart of the meetup, learning about Drupal.

@RobbieTheGeek

SASS talk then?

The Lightning Round begins now

Steven Merrill's picture

I'd like to propose a lightning talk on Drush console, part of https://github.com/zroger/drush-toolbox. Drush console uses phpsh and some extra magic to give you a REPL environment much closer to Scala, Ruby or Python with Drupal.

Not sure yet if I want to carry last month's presentation over or instead talk about D7's Render API caching.

Intro to Omega 3.x (Getting started)

5 minutes on the responsive, mobile-first, HTML5 Omega base theme.

Didnt we have a Lightening

bleen's picture

Didnt we have a Lightening Round on Omega at the previous meetup?

Perhaps this can be expanded into a more in-depth intro to using it?

I was scheduled to give

banghouse's picture

I was scheduled to give "intro to omega" last month but arrived late so snugug stood in. I could focus on any of the following:

  • omega tools (drush subtheme creation, import/export theme settings)
  • delta + context for contextual layouts and block placement
  • responsive design via media queries

omega vs fusion?

decibel.places's picture

I'd be interested in hearing comparisons on:

subtheming/multisites
omega mobile first vs fusion mobile strategies
etc.

If banghouse doesn't get a

Snugug's picture

If banghouse doesn't get a chance to discuss this in his lightning round (thoughts on pushing it to a 20 min discussion to take gamerxgirl's spot banghouse?) I'd be happy to discuss the differences with you (or anyone else for that matter) in a breakaway bof or after the meetup. Or, if banghouse is interested in a 20 on Omega and others are interested in the topic, I could fill his 5 min lightning slot w/a quick talk on mobile site philosophy touching on the differences between responsive, adaptive, (Omega fills both of these slots), stand alone general (which is what Fusion does), and device targeted (WURFL, Mobile Tools, etc…).

maybe a BoF?

robbiethegeek's picture

I think after banghouse's lightening talk & snugug's talk, a BoF would be great on Omega since there is so much buzz around it.

@RobbieTheGeek

Mine is less talk than it is

banghouse's picture

Mine is less talk than it is live demo. It could go as short or as long as people have interest. So if you'd like to take responsive/adaptive theory and run with it that'll be fine with me.

Intro to Domain Access

willyk's picture

If we are short on speakers I can do a 5 minute intro on the Domain Access module. Although it's a pretty niche/more advanced topic, so not sure if there'd be much interest. The first 3 suggestions all look good.

Intro to Domain Access

willyk's picture

If the 20 min talks don't fill-up, it may be best to do use one of them for the DA discussion instead of the lightning round. Although I'd keep it on the shorter side (10-15mins).

Target audience for the talk?

robbiethegeek's picture

I have moved it from lightening to 20min talk what is your target audience for this?
Robbie

DA Target Audience

willyk's picture

Target Audience would be Intermediate to Advanced

This would just be a quick intro:
- What it Domain Access module?
- Use case scenarios (example project)
- Controlling access by inbound HTTP host vs by roles/permission
- Understanding node access control
- Where/how to get started (basic config/setup)

In the unlikely event that time permits, I'd mention:
- Subdomains vs. Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs)
- Intersection with other relevant modules (OG, Content Access, Taxonomy Access Control, Search)
- Development, hosting and publishing considerations

Everyone that wants to speak...

Only 5 minutes for Domain Access?

esod's picture

I think Domain Access merits a longer presentation. The developer, Ken Rickard, presented it at DrupalCon 2009 Paris in just under an hour. The software for Domain Access is top notch. The concepts take some getting used to.

Btw, Mr. Rickard's presentation is still available here:

http://www.archive.org/details/SharingcontentacrossmultiplesiteswithDoma...

I, for one, agree and would

Domain Access Session @ DCNYC10 (Hopefully)

willyk's picture

I'm proposing a domain access session for DCNYC10 that would be longer (30-45 mins), and cover much of what AgentRickard did in Paris and at subsequent talks, as well as some recent great improvements in the module.

Deferring until Nov Meet-Up.

willyk's picture

Unfortunately I'm going to defer my suggested 20 mins talk on Domain Access until the next meet-up as there is a risk that I may not be able to attend this meet-up due to a work commitment. Perhaps we can swap Eric's D7 Ajax talk for mine

I'll do a ~20min talk the

likewhoa's picture

I'll do a ~20min talk the workbench module, also If people are interested, I can also do a lightning round on a BASH script that wraps around DRUSH to manage and install/uninstall -dev,alpha & beta modules.

Sign me up again please for a 20min slot? I'd like to a talk on Social Media & Drupal ;)

Lightning strikes twice!?

Steven Merrill's picture

Since the other lightning slot is open, I'd like to offer to give a 5 minute talk about Render API in Drupal 7 and the options for caching with it.

So long as you are using render arrays for your blocks and page callbacks, it is now very easy to find expensive code paths and cache them with a number of different granularities without needing to write your own cache_get() and cache_set() calls.

Status of your first talk?

robbiethegeek's picture

Is Roger taking lightening talk 1 and I will add you to the end of the lightening talks for your 2nd choice?

Hi,
How about controlling a facebook tab through Drupal ? Would you like to know how many people land on your facebook page and how many end up liking your page and how many do not?

Fangating is the activity with which when a user lands on a Facebook page will see an enticing message mentioning them the benefits of liking the page than just a bare wall.

Compare : http://www.facebook.com/PeoplesCommunityMarket vs http://www.facebook.com/dietpepsi. (I am not related to either).

We will learn how to do the following in less than 5 mins.
1. How to add a tab to a facebook page.
2. Embed a drupal webpage in a Facebook tab
3. Create a fan gate on your/ your organizations facebook page.
4. Show a different welcome content when fans sign up.
5. Adding Google Analytics to know how many fans like your page and how many walk away without liking it. (Facebook Insights is unclear about this).
I am a Drupal developer and learnt this for one of our projects.

Out for Staff retreat

pal4life's picture

Hi,
Thank you for listing this as the lightning talk. Just realized that I will be out for staff retreat and will be on my way back while the meetup is in progress. Embarrassed to not having checked this before. Please do add me for the talk next month. I will surely be watching the awesome presentations either live or recorded.

Thanks for all the help the Drupal community provides.

Hey,

Sorry to do this again, but I completely forgot I won't be back in time from our out-of-state staff retreat :( I was really looking forward to presenting! Please do open up my spot :)

Thanks!

Since Steven is doing a talk on drush console, I can do the other part of drush-toolbox, the development server controller that I'm calling Feather.

Live Streaming of NYC October Drupal Meetup

patoshi's picture

Kenny from aveventstream would be able to stream this event again as he wasnt able to make it last month.

So I guess for those that cannot make it, you can watch it here:

http://www.aveventstream.com/clients *updated

Each presentation will also be video edited and uploaded to the video archive here:

http://vimeo.com/channels/drupalnyc#27645598

As for last month's recording which was done with my crappy webcam, its still in the process of getting cut and edited. Will let everyone know once that is done.

live webcast stream can also

Thanks for streaming this. I am sick and don't want to make everyone else sick so I won't be able to attend. But now I can still get my monthly dose of Drupal meetup!

Darn. Forgot to sign up.

casaswing's picture

Hi everyone. Thought I signed up but I didn't, so I'm going to miss this. Pretty bummed.

Quick project presentation?

Stan's picture

I'm looking to hire a new Drupal developer for a project at the Columbia Journalism School; our old developer suggested coming to this meet-up to find people who might be interested in taking on this project. This doesn't seem to fit into the set agenda, but can I do a 5 -minute lightning-fast presentation on this at the beginning or end? Basically, we want to hire someone on a part-time, ongoing basis to make some planned changes as well as ongoing troubleshooting and management of this website: http://dartcenter.org.

Hey Stan,

You missed the window to signup for this month's meetup, I submitted the attendees list to the venue last night at 10pm. You should attend the meetups / social events and introduce yourself and get to know community members, and in turn they will get an insight into your project.

Thanks
Robbie(TheGeek)

I should be on the list

Stan's picture

I believe I did sign up for this month's meet-up, a few days back. Can you double-check your attendees list? I don't want to show up and be turned away.
Best,
Stan

yea your on the list:

http://groups.drupal.org/node/177379/signups/list -- Stan

This has happened a couple of times where friends tried to come but were turned away thinking they signed up, which is big deterrent from getting new people to come if that happened to them. Maybe there is a better way of doing this sign up process?

If anyone would like me to

If anyone would like me to post my slides from tonight and/or my sample code, let me know.
