Call for DrupalCampNYC 7 T-Shirt Designs

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
zroger's picture

Its official. We will have t-shirts for DrupalCampNYC 7.

Edit -- This has not been finally decided.

Now we need a design. Post your design ideas as comments on this thread. Designs should be optimized for 3 or fewer colors. Other than that, be bold. This DrupalCampNYC is shaping up to be one of the best ever, lets have t-shirts that match!!!

Submissions will be accepted in this thread until Saturday November 7. If at that point there isn't an outright favorite, we will pair the selection down and put up a poll with the finalists so that we can all vote on the final design.

Voting closes Nov 14 so we can get the order in on time.

A t-shirt photoshop template can be downloaded from here.

...more choices!

LOL

johnvsc's picture

I was just thinking that this morning .... !

Red Sox Fans...

himerus's picture

Our contingent of Boston area Drupalers have come to the conclusion that if the t-shirt design consists of anything related to the yankees we will not come! :D

Damn Yankees

forestmars's picture

Not that I am taking your comment too seriously ;-) however if the shirts look like Yankee pinstripes we'll have bigger problems than the bean town boys not showing up— namely "teeing off" all the Mets fans! (no pun intended of course.)

More room for the Philly folks I guess... no wait...

winston's picture

They may not be too happy with the Yankees by then either ;)

thoughts on tshrits

ericg's picture

first: someone put together a list of possible images at http://groups.drupal.org/node/28794

I think in general shirts are a waste of money and resources. The money for shirts could pay for almost 1/2 of the next camp.

But, if someone is determined to waste their money on this, I think there are some things should be kept in mind.

a: avoid inside jokes, we don't want to give the image of being too closed or self-referential
b: avoid sports themes, we don't want to give the image of being a "boys club"
c: make sure to not print on sweatshop produced shirts
d: make sure to get a variety of sizes, especially women's sizes

so, those ideas in mind, my vote is for
http://groups.drupal.org/files/bageldrupal.jpg
or
http://groups.drupal.org/files/konglicon_small.jpg

thanks Eric!

forestmars's picture

These are some great points Eric (well, I don't really get the first one about inside jokes…) and I am especially glad you've drawn attention to the importance of not using sweatshop produced shirts. I hope whoever vets the shirts will be able to tell us at the camp how they went about that.

However your suggestion about getting a variety of sizes flies in the face of a long-standing tradition of tech conferences, namely, having only a couple shirts on hand that are not at least an XL, XXL or XXXL; that way almost everyone has an equally ill-fitting shirt so there can be no bickering about fairness.

Yes I kid, but even Drupalcon Paris did run out of all sizes smaller than XL the day BEFORE it started (ie on Sprint day) and then on the first day ran out of all except XXL. (Official conference shirts…)

On a more serious note, Drupalcamp New York has always had a very high %age of women attendees, so that's a really good point too.

I agree completely and suggest stickers instead

wildfeed's picture

Shirts are a huge expense.

I crafted the Bagel, Coffee, Drupal image with a sticker in mind and really like the way. Converting it to a 3 color shirt will not produce great results.

http://groups.drupal.org/files/bageldrupal.jpg

Also, the problem of sizes for men and women is difficult to manage for a small event. I prefer a XXL shirt!

The "Subway series" stickers (pardon the sports analogy) went over well and I see them on many laptops at Drupal events.

They also cost very little to produce and distribute

I am also working on a non-sports related image for a 3 color shirt. (I couldn't help using Mr. Met on the baseball one, it was just too tempting.)

Good point Wildfeed

winston's picture

We could get multiple sticker designs done for less $$ and ultimately get them to many more people to spread the drupal love.

I wish we could just commit to sell the t-shirts to try to break even and maybe make a little profit to throw to the DA.

No sweatshop

zroger's picture

We will be using a highly recommended screen printing shop, not some sweat shop! Check out their story here:
http://vgkids.com/contents/about

And as for the sizes, I look to the community to help with that. @litwol, is there any way we can leverage the tools available on g.d.o to get a better representation of shirt sizes of those signed up for the camp?

Thank you

ericg's picture

I was thinking more about the manufacture of the shirts than the printing, but both are important to think about.

If we're going to print shirts, vgkids sounds like an appropriate place to have it done -- and while it's a bit more expensive they do have an option for what claim to be non-sweatshop produced shirts.

Here is another one :)

Action plan for t-shirts

johnvsc's picture

what's next?
any more designs?

Next is finalizing the cost

tom_o_t's picture

Next is finalizing the cost of food and refreshments for the camp and making sure that we have enough sponsorship to cover the cost of the T-shirts. Some people have voiced the opinion that T-shirts aren't the best way to spend approx $1000 of sponsorship, and have suggested stickers instead. Now is a great time to let us know what you think - whether you support the idea, or have other suggestions.

We have more than enough sponsorship to cover all the essentials (thanks to all the wonderful sponsors!) Currently there's no good way to carry money over from one camp to the next (although soon the Drupal Association will be able to do this kind of thing). If you're interested in more of the details please feel free to sign up to the organizer's list (see http://groups.drupal.org/node/27078).

we can have stickers on any

litwol's picture

we can have stickers on any other occasion as well due to their simplisity to acquire. we have had stickers for the past few camps. what we didnt have are shirts. lets stick to shirts please. if we want stickers as well then we can start another chipin like we did last time.

Number 7 Subway

Bill Choy's picture

This is the last Drupal Version that we can match to a NYC Subway Line, for a while.

Can someone mock-up a Subway Entrance sign like (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3590/3607514543_e1936b7232.jpg) of a Number 7 Flushing Line.
And add the Drupal Guy and change the station name to "Drupal Camp 7". The back side could be a section the 7 line on the standard Subway Map with the stations names changed to the new Drupal Features or names of new hooks.

I think the Subway thing has been done already

wildfeed's picture

But we don't have it on a shirt.

I could mock up something if enough people think that is the ONE to go on a shirt.

Let's see what else comes up before I go through the trouble.

My bad

Bill Choy's picture

I misread the initial posting. Thought they cancel the final design, not the decision to have a t-shirt.

Sticker do get better mileage for advertising dollar than a t-shirt. I can only wear the same t-shirt once every two week, at best. But I happy to proudly tag my laptop that I use every day.

I think we will get better

litwol's picture

I think we will get better mileage if we dont consider the topic as 'either or'. We can have both and its much easier to get stickers chipin sponsored than it is to get shirts.

New T-Shirt / Sticker desgn for Drupal Camp 7

johnvsc's picture

This is what I was thinking of for a while :)
Only local images are allowed.
There are a couple of things i incorporated into this:

  1. The "local 336" is our node id for the nyc group page on g.d.o
  2. The 0's and 1's is "Don't hack core" in binary
  3. The initials of International Network of Internet Techs is, loving , INITech

Just imagining wearing

litwol's picture

Just imagining wearing something like this makes me feel being part of a secret cult ;). So many details this design holds. Very interesting. Many details to make one happy, but it certainly require a lot of "in" knowledge.

Your other design is much simpler and easier to understand from the first glance.

I'm divided between them. I would buy both :)

I like it, but...

ericg's picture

1: I always prefer to use Free Software instead of Open Source. More and more the phrase Open Source is becoming watered down and is close to having no real meaning at all anymore.

2: I find it awkward to declare ourselves members of a non-existent international organization

3: We are not a Union and I think it is not good to imply that we are, by declaring ourselves to be a Local, the potential misunderstanding could be problematic.

Almost became a member in the late 80's as an employee of a phototypography shop in NYC. When Adobe Type Manager was released I bought a Mac and went solo. The entire graphics industry changed practically overnight. I'm curious how things are handled now.

heh heh heh

johnvsc's picture

well, oleg, i do have that evil sinister streak that this caters too ;)
it's the same "pre-disney" new york darkenss that named a neighborhood "Hell's Kitchen" or called our home "Gotham"

also, the g.d.o number in the graphic is correct and i purposely used "network" instead of "brotherhood" to include all of our awesome webchix's :)

btw, did you know that the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) has a branch for web-developers?

The front

awesome

very keith, circa '86 !!!!

i love this!

Yes, it is a Keith tribute

wildfeed's picture

Keith was very New York and very Open Source.

Thanks for the kind words!
