The Drupal NYC Meetup is moving to Meetup.com. Starting with the July 1st meetup, all RSVPs will need to be made at http://www.meetup.com/drupalnyc/. You will need to enter your full name as it appears on your ID during the RSVP process. This is to ensure you have access to the building where the meetup is hosted.
Why?
Many reasons but the primary factor is the need to have people’s full names on their registration for building security. groups.drupal.org does not currently offer this functionality and while it is planned, there isn’t a precise timeline for it @see https://www.drupal.org/node/2214339.
Other benefits include RSVP visibility (see who & how many are attending), easier messaging, prettier emails, chipins, better reminders, Google Calendar integration and much more.
Our current attendance rate is about 50% of those who RSVP, about 40 people per month. I am guestimating from the better reminders and RSVP visibility that the percentage will increase a bit by using Meetup.com. We shall see.

Thanks for reporting that,
Thanks for reporting that, can you try again? I just tried it as an incognito, anonymous user and it is working for me. Sometimes D.O has showed me access denied and then seconds/minutes later I refresh and it works fine.
Fixed
Oh, you were right. I was testing the link in your comment before. I just clicked the link in the post and it was taking me to something like drupal.org/freelink/345345345. It was because I tried using the "[ [" "] ]" syntax for creating a link, which says it is supported in the text format but I guess breaks on internal links.
I just converted it to an anchor element and it is now clickable.

As a long time organizer of this community, I support this decision. We as a group have wholeheartedly tried to use G.D.O. as the way we organized the events, but there have been long-term issues that have been solved by meetup.com.
I suggest we still use g.d.o/nyc as a hub for the New York City Drupal community but coordinate events on meetup.com

Thanks for the support Robbie!
As you suggested, the plan is just to use Meetup for the Drupal NYC Meetup right now.
Signed up for the rest of the year.
The best thing about Meetup.com, is that we can have placeholder for future meetings. So I've signed up for the rest of the year.
I recall a couple of times when I couldn't go, because I forgot to get my name on the list before midnight.

Great!
Another nice thing is that we can end signups at a predetermined time automatically. This means I have extended the signup time to 10am the morning of and we should be able to continue doing that in the future (at this venue at least).

There are quite a few DUGs that use meetup -- its unfortunate that GDO cannot provide the level of service to replace meetup... yet.
There is some slow movement on this, but probably won't see substantial changes until the fall, when we start implementing the recommendations coming out of the content strategy workgroup.
