When to PressFlow and When to Drupal

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Duration: 1 hour

Brief description: This session will present the differences between the two platforms. We will be spending the next two months evaluating both platforms for use on two large scale and highly trafficked sites. We have evaluated the compatibility with existing contributed modules for each platform and found both sufficient for the two sites we are developing now. Our focus now is about performance, long term viability and maintenance of each platform. Early tests have shown that proper configuration changes as well as a properly tuned environment put both platforms on relatively equal ground.

Agenda

  • Detailed differences between two platforms
  • Performance improvements in PressFlow
  • Potential compatibility issues with PressFlow
  • Test Results replicating the 100 Million (mainly anonymous) and 150 Million (highly authenticated) page views / month
  • Open Topic (looking for recommendations in comments below)
  • Q & A

I think it will go over very well. Very catchy title.

What winston said!

This sounds like a great topic! I'm really interested to see how core Drupal stacks up against Pressflow; I was surprised to hear you say that they're so equal.

I'm glad there's interest. We

I'm glad there's interest. We have a great opportunity during these projects to run quite a few tests. I'm open for running others, just add them to this thread.

And just a note, I did say "relatively" equal. :) Quite a few tests show Drupal having better response times/ throughput, however PressFlow almost always utilizes less CPU and Memory.

Any Update on this Subject

I am overseeing the development of a multisite publishing implementation using domain access and it was suggested to me we look into PressFlow. I had no previous information on PressFlow and would be interested in any feedback on it versus Drupal Domain Access.

Thanks

Pressflow is a drop-in

Pressflow is a drop-in replacement for Drupal core. You would still use Domain Access (and other Drupal modules) with it. Pressflow for Drupal 7 has a few esoterica changes including the ability to read Drupal variables and databases settings from the environment that Apache or php-fpm is running in, and local APC caching of file existence checks. Unless you have a specific need for those features, you probably don't need to worry about Pressflow 7.

I think Steven laid it out best, but here's a link to the original slides. This presentation was really about the performance differences, and not functional though:
