LibreOffice Website Could Be Drupal

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Many of you probably know that OpenOffice.org's community leaders have been working to move the project to a new home, sponsored by an independent non-profit Foundation. The foundation's name is The Document Foundation, and unless Oracle gives ownership of the name "OpenOffice.org" to the foundation, we'll have to choose another one ("LibreOffice" is the working name that will be adopted permanently in that case).

Much of the LibreOffice infrastructure is in flux right now, and there is an ongoing discussion about which CMS the project should choose for its main site. I have been advocating Drupal, of course, and would appreciate your feedback to strengthen my argument.

Can folks here help me:

  • Build a list of major peer sites using Drupal (I've already mentioned Firefox and Ubuntu, as they represent other large FOSS projects)
  • Answer some questions on the mailing list where this discussion is taking place: website@libreoffice.org (Subscribe by sending an empty message to this address: website+subscribe@libreoffice.org )
  • Step forward to offer assistance in architecting, designing and building the project site. (I know this is a big request, but it could be an excellent portfolio project for a shop or group of freelancers looking to make a name for themselves.)
  • Think of any other ways to help me convince the LibreOffice website team to use Drupal.

This request can go beyond the NYC group, but I thought I'd start here with folks I know first.

Thanks,
Ben

Any thoughts on this yet?

It looks like we've got a week or two before the LibreOffice team implements its CMS. Some community members have recommended SilverStripe, Plone, and WordPress, but I think Drupal is definitely a stronger choice for our purposes.

This could be a good showcase site for Drupal, as well as a way to strengthen the connections between these two major open source communities. I am pretty excited about the possibilities!

Progress Update

The great news is that we've assembled a team of Drupalists from around the world who are collaborating to build a dev site right now. Further, the LibreOffice Steering Committee has decided that LibO will adopt Drupal as our main site CMS in the 3-6 month timeframe. (We'll have two main sites--one for LibreOffice, the application, and a second site for The Document Foundation, the organizational sponsor.) We're building our presence on a temporary platform in the meantime, and iterating on the Drupal dev site in parallel.
