Community discussions around Open Publish distribution.

OpenPublish is a packaged distribution of Drupal, that has been tailored to the needs of today's online publishers. OpenPublish is ideal for the implementation of a variety of media outlet's sites including: online magazines, newspapers, journals, trade publications, broadcast, wire service and membership publications. Built and supported on standard Drupal core (currently Drupal 6x), OpenPublish features support everything from basic news coverage needs to Web 2.0 trends, social publishing, semantic tagging and topic hubs. Each component bundled in the distribution is well supported, documented and modularly designed according to Drupal's architecture.

Important note: in order to fix consistency issues and critical bugs, in a timely manner, OpenPublish had to patch some third-party modules included in it. It's not recommended to independently update those. More information at: http://groups.drupal.org/node/60313

The Power of OP

After considering switching from OP to another Drupal platform, I wistfully looked at other sites built on Openpublish. After checking out The New Republic, and seeing they make do without drop-down menus, I fixed my database and have squelched my desire for individual section "landing pages."

Question: How do I replace the staid "Sports Articles" message that appears when readers select the "Sports" primary menu item with a graphic, akin to TNR's?

Thanks, Ed

How to Use OP as Backend for Child Theme?

I purchased a custom theme with many more design possibilities than OP's current theme. However, I love OP's back-end. Is there a way to make this new theme an OP child, retain all of the new theme's design, yet take advantage of OP's strengths under the hood?

How to Start Contexts From Scratch?

I want to start from scratch, offering no Contexts for OP, building my own. How do I do this, while retaining the core features of OP? I love the OP backend and the basic OP theme, but I want to decide how my frontpage looks and develop land-paging for each section.

Front page Blocks, etc. & ckeditor "bug"?

Like others I have trouble figuring out how to get things posted on the frontpage. For instance, the "middle" column is extremely hard to fill with material based on what instruction I can find and have seen.
Well, there is another side problem that has to do with that also. At least on my installation.
In using ckEditor to post what page(s) a block should appear on, I get this problem. I click the editor to "source" and type in, for example, , then I save. Then I look for the block and nothing on the front page or any other.

Context Sections: Partial Success But Need Help

I've had partial success creating sections via context and views. I created a "play" context, where I've recreated the look of the front page. The trigger is the path /articles/Play. This displays the left sidebar, but the content in the left sidebar spans the entire page. After the last left-sidebar post is displayed, then the "Articles in 'Play'" appears in the left column and the normal right-column blocks appear. It seems as if the "articles" view is being tacked onto my "play" context.

How do I clear this up?

Articles View and Sections

I've narrowed my search on how to create sections for my site to the "articles" view. Somehow, when users click on a primary menu item, the "articles" view kicks-in.

My questions are how do I get the "articles" view to use the "Homepage Block," rather than the "page" block? Secondly, which context is using the "articles" view?

Context Bug: Reactions Not Working

I've spent the day experimenting with contexts, and discovered the only Reaction that seems to work is Active Menu. I've tried disabling various regions (such as the navigation, footer, etc.) without luck. I can add items to various regions (such as adding the secondary menu to the footer), however.

Anyway to Kill the sitewide Context?

I want to nuke the "sitewide" context. (My plan is to create my own sections based on taxonomy). I've tried disabling the sitewide context and turning off sitewide by checking false. But the same taxonomy-based layout appears. Is there another OP context using the sitewide flag?

How To Eliminate Global Context?

I want to change my site's contexts to the following:

Front Page
Section Page
Individual Page

Currently, the path is Front->Global->Individual.

I've tried to disable the global page, but to no avail - it keeps appearing. I've cleared the cache, but that doesn't help. Any suggestions?

Curious to know why there is no default "location" field in the event content type, and what would be the recommended way to add one. I notice the location module is not included in the OP2.0 package.

Context for Sections?

Can I create a new context (or clone an existing one) that would allow me to have more control over when blocks appear?

My idea is to create a "movie_page" context that is a duplicate of the standard context page, except it places some movie review blocks only on that page. Is this possible?

(Contexts are opening creating many possibilities.)

How to Avoid Duplicate Content

I'm working on my front page, displaying a nodequeue of five hand-picked stories to list under the featured story. I also have a view listing 10 recent articles. Often one of my hand-picked stories in the nodequeue also appears in the recent_stories view. Is there a way to prevent this duplication?

Context module and language-dependent frontpage

Hi, I am working on a site designed to be bilingual and am using OP 1.7. I subthemed the OP theme and being new to Drupal, it took me a while to figure out that the frontpage layout was handled by the frontpage context item. So my aim is to duplicate that frontpage context, let's say to a frontpage_fr and make the same blocks available, but with French content. My problem is that it did not work when i specified the path as "fr".

Nice Menu Appears as Block

I'm having trouble installing nice_menus in the nav region, as previously outlined. Instead of a navigation menu that is horizontal, I get a menu block in the nav region that displays vertically. I've tried everything I can think of; does anyone have a clue why the "primary menu" would appear as a block, rather than a navigation menu with OP 2.0?

Sub-theme and IE madness

I'm using OP 2.0
IE 7
Firefox 3.6.3 (for windows)

After failed attempts at using panel pages for my frontpage, I decided to go the (as it turns out) easier sub-theme way.
I created a sub-theme from the OP theme and added 4 regions.
The site seems to be working perfectly in firefox with the regions holding the content exactly the way I wanted..
All hell breaks loose in IE though.

How to make the head of the front page look like this site?

I would like to make the top area of the site look like the one in http://www.windsorstar.com/ . That is, the bar that says "Hello Visitor! Login/Register" should go on top of the banner ad and the banner will be immediately on top of the site logo area.

Also, the current head banner is placed in the center of the page which wastes some space to its left and right. I was wondering if it would be possible to shift the banner to the right, and make some room for another small area on its left.

I know anything is possible but can anyone give me some direction how this can be achieved?

Please Integrate Drop-Down Menus in OP 2.1

Please integrate some drop-down menu in OP 2.1. The back-end of publishing is very full-featured, yet drop-down menus are seen as a user-provided add-on. It would be nice to have a drop-down system integrated as well as other parts of the OP ecosystem.

Taxonomy and Blocks

I want to display a block in certain menu sections. Since the menu sections, such as local, are taxonomy terms, what do I specify in the block configuration so that it displays only when /taxonomy/term/27 is reached? This is a real head-scratcher.
