Community discussions around Open Publish distribution.

OpenPublish is a packaged distribution of Drupal, that has been tailored to the needs of today's online publishers. OpenPublish is ideal for the implementation of a variety of media outlet's sites including: online magazines, newspapers, journals, trade publications, broadcast, wire service and membership publications. Built and supported on standard Drupal core (currently Drupal 6x), OpenPublish features support everything from basic news coverage needs to Web 2.0 trends, social publishing, semantic tagging and topic hubs. Each component bundled in the distribution is well supported, documented and modularly designed according to Drupal's architecture.

Some useful links:

Important note: in order to fix consistency issues and critical bugs, in a timely manner, OpenPublish had to patch some third-party modules included in it. It's not recommended to independently update those. More information at: http://groups.drupal.org/node/60313

Another way to upgrade from OP 1.5 to OP 1.7

I created a development version of my OP 1.5 site. This week I've been converting it to OP 1.7. Two nights ago I piece by piece rebuilt the theme folder to reflect the OP 1.7 theme folder and made sure that all the theme files are parallel with OP 1.7 theme files. Last night I unistalled the OP 1.5 administration modules and uploaded the new ones into the folder and the OP 1.7 feature modules. All I had to do was change on function in template.tpl and the whole system seems to be working without any problems.

Has someone tried to import an iCal feed via the Feeds module?

I am having a problem with importing a Google calendar feed using the Feeds module and iCal parser.

I'm not sure if it's an issue with the Feeds module, iCal Parser or OP 1.7.1, so I'm going to ask in each place : )

First of all, I added the Calendar module and created a new Date content type to populate the calendar. I have set up the Feeds importer so I can accept iCal feeds through the iCal parser. When I import the iCal feed, I receive this error:

Mollom may be a problem for me - for free use that is?

The site I am working is a migration from existing busy site.

Cannot afford to use the Mollom, too expensive for the number of daily postings and comments.

If I remove mollom will I have issues that cross over into other areas?

Can I just use the captha or e-captha for my purposes.

The site will not get 100 postings per day, but it will generate several hundred comments daily.

OpenPublish for (3) multi-site with one OpenPuilish & (3)individual databases

OpenPublish for a multi-site installation.
There will be a total of 3 sites on one virtual shared hosting server.

I remember some time back where there were issues using virtual server. I did a competent install of OP on a virtual shared hosting server, which didn't seem to be that big a deal.
My purpose of this is to possible determine if there are problems others might see.

OpenPublish 1.7.1 Performance Patch

Attached file provides significant performance improvement and is a recommended patch for OP 1.7.1 installations.

Just overwrite the original noderelationshops.inc file under sites/all/modules/noderelationships with the one attached here. You will have to rename attached file, removing the extra "_.txt" at the end. Sorry, drupal.org security rules, made us add that.

Make sure to clear Drupal cache (from devel or via http://yourdomain.com/admin/content/clearcache) after you update the file, otherwise you will start getting some erros.

Question about the "Author" and user in blogs and the breadcrumb

I understand the benefit of having an additional "author" content type, unrelated to a user, but I've noticed that when I create an author that is not in the user database, in the end, I get this in the blog breadcrumb:

"Home » Blogs » jchoo's blog"

where "jchoo" is my user login.

So, even though I am able to create a blog author without necessarily relying on that author to be a user in my user database, the page is still relying on a user name for the breadcrumb. When I delete the user name from the "author information", the breadcrumb shows:

"Home » Blogs » 's blog"

Repeating Nodes in content_by_topic view

I know that this is really a views issue however after reading several tickets I realized that it will not be fixed. This is also an OP1.5 issue. I looked to see how it was managed in OP1.7 and it looked the same.

I reinstalled RDF and OpenCalais last night and tagged all the content on the site.

Foreach warning in Openpublish core module

On installing the core module I get the following error when saving the modules:

warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in public_html/modules/openpublish_core.module on line 36.

Line 36 is as follows:

foreach (glob(dirname(__ FILE__) . "/views/*.inc") as $filename) {

(ignore the space before FILE)

How can I fix this?

Thank you.

Typical Theming Tasks?

A lot of questions about OpenPublish involve: "How do I do this in theme" type help requests. To make things easier, we are working on the cleanup and improvements to the OpenPublish theme. As part of this cycle, we are also trying to create an OP Theming Guide/documentation. The two efforts actually help improve each other. When we try to explain how things work, we often find a better way to do something and as we fix things in the theme layer, we remember to document the trickiest parts.

How do I get rid of the "by:" (byline) that shows up after my article teaser?

I have created a "more articles by this author" block, which includes the article's image, title and content teaser. But for some reason, at the bottom of the teaser it also shows a "by:", which looks like it comes from the new "Author" page.

I've looked around to see where it is coming from, but can't seem to find the source.

I have included a screenshot.

Thank you.

The layout of content under the Author profile in an article node is messed up

I've come across an issue with my layout being broken for anonymous users. I have included a few screenshots, hopefully this might help someone see what's wrong.

The Problem
For anonymous users the layout of the content beneath the Author's Profile (related links, related You Tube videos) and the content in the right-sidebar (Ad blocks, recommended content, etc...) is all messed up (see screenshot 2).

When the user logs in, the layout problems go away (see screenshot 1). The related links, the related You Tube videos and the right-sidebar blocks all go to where they belong.

Integrating Open Publish 1.7.1 articles with CiviCRM contacts

Now that I have my Open Publish 1.7.1 site up and running, with feeds coming in, Calais etc. all working fine, I am looking for a way to create "node relationships" between OP content type nodes (mainly articles) created and CiviCRM Contacts. I am using OP as an aggregation platform, with most of the content being created by the feeds module and not user creation.

Several feature/support requests

Now that I have gone deeper into OP 1.7.1, I have come up with the following feature requests

About the blog nodes:

I saw that the node-blog.tpl.php has the codes to add main_image and main_image_credit. However, the relevant fields are not actually there in the default OP installation. Therefore, I've added those two CCK fields and was able to attach a main_image to the blog node (exactly similar to what we do with article nodes). However, I could not display the main_image_credit field on the blog-nodes.

How do I create a "more by this author" block?

In OP 1.6, I had created a "More by this author" block which displayed other stories written by the same author as the current story being viewed.

Now that the author is a separate node and referenced via node reference, I'm having a difficult time duplicating that block.

I know there is an "author_articles" view, which displays when you click on the author's name, but when I place that block on the same page as an article, nothing shows up (it does not show other stories by the same author).

Anyone have a clue how I could create this in the OP 1.7?

Thank you.
