Hello All,
Over the last few weeks, we have come up with a list of important tasks that we deemed important for the module redesign. However, we would like to test those with our users. So, we are going to conduct interviews and understand how they use the module page.
Following is the guide we intend to use to do the interviews:

Redesign modules page
http://drupal.org/node/538904
We kicked of this edition with a rundown of the modules page redesign effort that has had lots of energy the last few weeks. Discussion is lively and we should take care it doesn't turn into a clash of opinions. There was a good question on how we will decide on a direction, and where to base that decision on. We discussed that a bit and came up with the following:
- A first stab at a prioritized task list for the modules page
- We will verify those assumptions with some interviews
Usability testing vendors
I'm considering using a service such as http://www.usertesting.com/ for usability testing on behalf of a client who doesn't necessarily have the time or budget for using a proper usability lab, but would probably benefit from some basic form of usability testing.
Has anyone tried a service such as this? If so, what pros/cons exist?

Drupal is growing up, and with its maturity comes a complexity that is making it harder and harder to learn. We have initiatives that focus on making the user interfaces easier to use, but we have not been paying attention to how improvements to core have affected new contributors, and their ability to learn how to code for Drupal. This wiki is be a place where we can track and discuss how to keep Drupal coding easy to learn.
(This idea comes out of the Engineering for the 80% talk given at Drupal Camp Colorado, and the Bay Area Drupal Camp in 2011.)

The first problem we need to solve is how users get around Drupal's interface on devices with small screens and touch screens. See the D8MUX road map.
Let's do some brainstorming and prototyping over how we get this good on mobile.
What do we need?
- Simple
- Consistent
- Finger friendly
- Complementary - The navigation can't upstage the main purpose of the page or task.

Building advanced websites with Drupal without any need of custom coding/modules is rapidly improving almost on a daily basis. With a foundation using modules such as Views, Page Manager (CTools) Panels, Rules, Flag, etc we can accomplish many advanced designs by just point and click.

As we found out in London, Drupal's mobile admin interface faces some big obstacles to overcome. If we want to to be able to tackle some of these problems in the next release cycle we need focus, the idea being we don't move on to the next item in till we have the previous one licked. I've whipped up proposal for our road map. This is by no means complete, there is plenty of detail to fill in.
I'm hoping we can work on it together.

As the Curriculum and training group has identified while outlining the various skill sets involved in site creation & use, there's an under-represented skillset in the site creation process: that of the "Advanced content creator". This person has unique requirements, and to describe the requirements, it's first helpful to describe the person / persona. I hope this will be useful not only to the Curriculum & training group, but to other Drupal initiatives related to the Drupal needs of this type of user that is (already, if not increasingly) frequently present at sites deploying Drupal. (Thus the cross-posting to multiple groups.)

Another edition coming up. Join us on IRC in #drupal-usability ( What's that? ) for:
- Discuss the last remaining topic for the usability gate documentation: choosing our design principles to guide Drupal UX work.
- Bring your contrib module user interface problems! If you know the UI sucks but are unsure how to improve it, bring screenshots and/or a demo site and we'll review it.
Do you have other topics you'd like to bring up? Let us know in the comments. See you there!
Read moreUsability Study for Web Developers with Drupal Experience
Microsoft is conducting a Usability study on their Redmond campus for front-end web developers. Our Researcher would like a segment of the participants to have experience with Drupal, and in-depth experience creating HTML and CSS.
We have a variety of time slots available for this research study and can be flexible with your schedule. Here are the nuts and bolts:
-
Participants must be professional web developers experienced with Drupal, CSS, and HTML. Some SharePoint experience is helfpul.
-
Participants must be US citizens or permanent residents with a social security number.
Usability IRC Meeting#5
Hang out with us on IRC (#drupal-usability) for another exciting UX happy hour to discuss and get closer to the usability gate for D8.
We will discuss the "verify" gate this time, which means how do we usability test Drupal 8 issues?
Due to time constraints, we will not have any design review for this meeting. See you at the meeting!

As the members of the “Usability” group, we all know that resources to conduct usability studies are limited. For getting more data and conducting more studies, I am thinking we could collaborate with Bentley University, Massachussetts, USA for a usability study.

During the accessibility BoF at Drupalcon London several people showed interest in resuming the monthly conference calls that we have had in the past.
I would be happy to participate in these calls, and think we should get started. There are several initiatives that require some attention, primarily:
- html5 accessibility (including WAI-ARIA in Core)
- WYSIWYG in Core
- Further triage and patches for open accessibility issues
- ...
I'm hoping that someone will volunteer to organize these calls so that we can:

I've been out of the loop on the D8 usability discussions - I know we're looking at improving the admin usability of Drupal but I wonder if anyone is taking a look at the front end usability of Drupal as well?

In order to be more efficient in our approach in identifying issues, we have created a simple google spreadsheet. The intent is for everyone in the community to be able to log issues easily. Over the period of time we will be able to prioritize and solve these usability issues.
I hear you guys, this is a very 1.0 way of doing it, but at least it is a start! right?
So when you get annoyed with something, make a difference, log the issue.

So Twitter decided the world needs about base toolkit for making web apps, Bootstrap.
It looks like it has some really smart default styling and some good established UI patterns. It's worth picking through for inspiration on UI patterns and general core usability.
Forms, in particular buttons, is interesting. Maybe adding styling for the HTML5 "email" input would be a great addition to Seven. The checkbox styling also looks great!

Mobile Usability Testing Sprint - Facts & Findings
On the Friday of Drupalcon London we ran a Mobile Usability Testing Session on Drupal's admin interface.

We had a strong turnout, with lots of enthusiasm from the testers. We managed to test the UI on the following devices:
- Nokia N900
- Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
- HTC Sensation
- Samsung galaxy s2
- iPad 2
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 3GS
- iPhone 3G
Here are some of the thoughts I came away with after the session.

Is there a module that would or could prevent content providers from creating links consisting solely of "click here" or "here" (for link accessibility) or even preventing those words from appearing in a link at all (for link conciseness)?
