Content Creation UX Study Plan

Introduction

Drupal 8 wants to provide a much-improved workflow for content creators. One of the most critical screens in this is the content creation page. This issue outlines a plan for implementing a new design for this page.

The main issues that this design wants to solve are:

New user onramp proposal

The design of this Onramp has come about as a result of the insights gained from the Drupal 7 Usability Study at Google. The Onramp is intended to part of Drupal core and greet users when they first install Drupal.

Goals of Onramp:

D8 UX Analysis – The IA Space Hypothesis

An ongoing difficulty in design discussions is finding reliable/agreeable words to describe or identify key concepts. Whatever label we choose for an idea may have different connotations for different people. The term ‘Information Architecture Space’ (or ‘IA Space’) is certainly subject to varied interpretations so I want to take some time here to describe what I’m referring to more fully.

D8 UX Analysis: Design Assumptions and Principles

The architectural changes underway for Drupal 8 via WSCCI and related activities present UX designers with the non-trivial task of working out a new approach to Drupal administrative and content management tasks. UX design is a complex matter under any circumstances but when the technological ground is shifting dramatically under the feet of the designers then it is all the more challenging. Here are some brain exercises to help us limber up for the task!

D8 UX Analysis – Layouts, IA Spaces and the Principle of Definition-Usage Pairs

One of the key ideas behind the new D8 architecture is that of resources being identified by unique URLs. It sounds simple enough but, behind it, I think there are some exciting potentials for transforming Drupal’s UX strategy. I want to share some ideas about that kind of transformation here and I’ll tackle it from a few angles: ‘what is a page’; the principle of definition-usage pairs; and IA Space and URL semantics.

    Call for prototypers

If you have development chops, designers and other contributors of this community need your help bringing designs to life.

Allow me to paint a picture of the need and skills required...

The task of creating content has been redesigned (http://groups.drupal.org/node/217434), and has reached a point of consensus. At this point, the design really needs to interactive to flush out how all of the various interactions will work (or don't). Additionally, once made interactive, we validate the direction by testing the prototype with end users.

Notes: Usability BoF at DrupalCon Denver

On Thursday, March 22, 2012, @lisarex and I ran a BoF to talk about Usability. First of all, we would like to thank every one who could make it to the session. For the others who could not make it, here is the summary from the session.

Since the group was a mix of new and existing contributors, the focus was on what we “the usability team” could do to make things better for the community.

I have lots of WYSIWYG data

Drupal Gardens has had WYSIWYG for 2 years now. We have quite a bit of data, both on upfront research in terms of technical expertise on which editor is the best choice, as well as on usability data.

I should have posted this data earlier, but just haven't made the time. Sorry. Better late than never. Here's the data...

Early on, when we were trying to figure out which editor to use, we compiled this doc...

Changes to the find content screen

Like it or not, people make instant decisions. Unfortunately, the instant decision Drupal users are making is 'this looks hard.' As such, the remaining experiences people are having, are under the premises that they are in a hard tool. It's urgent that we change this.

To mitigate this, I want to propose a scenario which is partially based on observation of countless usability studies being performed on Drupal Gardens - which in essence is Drupal.

Users come into Drupal, they see and/or interact with:

Usability Report from the Drupal 7 UX Study at Google

This past February Garen Checkley, Jen Lampton and I ran the Drupal 7 Usability Study at Google. We created a handbook page on drupal.org to share the exhaustive list of usability issues. While we learned about a lot of specific interface and module-level problems, we also saw broad trends that called for a higher-level analysis.

You can view this report here.

    Introductions, say hi

With Drupalcon Denver going, we're meeting a lot of new people who reach out saying they would like to get involved. It's not easy to find the best place to get started in this big big community with so many things going on.

So, please use this thread to say hi, introduce yourself and tell a bit about what you do and how you think you'd like to contribute. From that, we can help eachother find a place and topic to get cracking on.

    Thank you!

    Goal

Get more people excited about improving the Media module UX.

    Strategy

    • Make it easier
    • Make it fun
    • Make it worthwhile

A first wireframe for a create content screen for small screens

Sitting in at the Denver mobile sprint I spent some time coming up with a wireframe to explore how we could organize the create content page for small screens.

    Background:

    The general idea

    • Content creation and editing screen consists of fields, settings and publish/save buttons.
    • Show each field on its own line. One line for each field.
