Women in Drupal (Formerly DrupalChix)

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

We are active! Connect with us on the following channels to chat with other members and learn about our virtual meetups:

Only about 1.5% of the people involved in open source are women, leaving us terribly underrepresented. In the Drupal world, we're up to a whopping 7% 10% 17%, which only gets us to awfully unrepresented. ;) This group is for anyone (male, female, or otherwise) who believes that we can do better and wants to help.

So if you:

  • are a woman who needs some help/guidance in order to get (more) involved with Drupal and the Drupal community
  • are a woman who wants to network and get to know other women involved in Drupal
  • are anyone who has ideas on things we can do to help encourage women to participate in Drupal

...then this is the group for you. :)

Brainstorming on Increasing the Ranks of Women in Drupal

In an initial post to the group. I suggested that it might be interesting to discuss ways we might increase the number, the percentage, and the influence of women in Drupal. I head an executive search and recruiting research firm and have worked on diversity initiatives to increase the number of women technologists at some of the most powerful and successful companies in software. Despite the best of intentions, increasing the number of women in technology has proven challenging for a whole host of reasons.

Resources for women who want to get into open source

I posed a question on Twitter asking if there were any good lists of women-friendly open source projects. Using this to archive the results. It's a wiki, so folks should feel free to add their own suggestions as well. :)

(The short answer is not really, though one might be able to be sort of inferred from some of the below links.)

Question for male allies: what was the catalyst for your "ah-ha" moment regarding sexism in tech?

I've been wondering about this question recently, and thought it might be nice to just ask, and see what types of responses come in.

If you're the type of dude who calls out other dudes when they say sexist things, who supports women when they feel attacked/harrassed because of their gender in a geek setting, and/or who actively encourages women to get into technology, I'd love to know what was the thing that opened your eyes to the problem and take action?

Was it:

Female Developer <> always equal designer.

I am curious, and wanting to get feedback from other women drupal developers. I am a back-end developer. I have found when meeting with project managers, vendors, and other non-developers, that they assume I am the designer and the male is the back-end developer. Even when I am introduced as the Lead Developer.

Problems with setting uploading for users

I'm perplexed. I am editing two different sites that both have ckeditor. Both are in D6. I have it set on both sites so that when the user clicks on the image icon in the Body, they are able to successfully upload the image using the box that comes up, and set the different image properties, click OK, and then the photo appears in the Body. No problem there.

VPS or Shared webhost

Hi all, I am fairly new to Drupal. I am re-designing/developing a website for a homeowners association using Drupal 7 that was originally built using tables. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being clueless and 10 being a Drupal guru), I would say I'm a 3. I don't know Php or Linux. I have some basic HTML and CSS skills.

The boy's club prevails because of the terminology?

"I am facing an extremely hard time coming up with a business model in order to sell myself as a viable Drupal developer. One thing that I am finding is that after getting to the final line of the interview process it is inevitably the person in charge of the hiring picks the coder. So what are your thoughts on that? My strengths are building sites that people can use, that content mangers can actually build, and the visuals are the enticing factor that lead to the content of the site. It is not in the code but the entire experience of visiting my site.
