LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.- views_area_options - Ericduran
- Device Detection - twom
- Taxonomy Defaults - winston
- Reverse Node Reference View demo (15 to 20 min) - wildfeed
- Data Mashups with Drupal (30 min) - mcaudy
- Site Re-Design/Theming example (20 min) - orbgasm
- "Tougher than leather" - Theming with runvsc base theme - johnvsc
- The meaning of Android (30 min) - skyred
- Newbie Birds of a Feather - ???
- Drupal Drinks and Drupal Fun at Dakota Roadhouse
Signup closes midnight of the day before the event. We don't have the luxury to add "last minute" attendees.
Remember: You must have your REAL NAME on your groups.drupal.org profile otherwise you will not be able to get in to 7 World Trade Center!

First three topics carried over
The first three topics (Reverse Node Reference Demo, QueryPath and XSLT, and Site Re-Design/Theming example) were carried over from November.
Hopefully they will be the starting point for an awesome December meetup.
Any new topics? Especially 5 minute "lightning round" topics?
"QueryPath & XSLT" session is renamed "Data Mashups with Drupal"
I will still focus on QueryPath and XSLT as very powerful tools for creating Data Mashups with Drupal, but I think that more people will be generally interested in a "Data Mashups" presentation, simply because most people don't know what QueryPath and XSLT are yet!!
Drupal now has many tools for rapidly and efficiently bringing large amounts of external data into Drupal, and visualizing different specific combinations of the data - "data mashups" - with Views and other Drupal UI tools.
I also will talk very briefly about the following modules, to give an overview of how to create Data Mashups with Drupal.
Feeds and feed-related tools, such as PubSubHubBub can be used to bring RSS, Atom, CSV, etc. data into Drupal.
The Data module can be used to store external data into custom Drupal databases that allow that data to be processed and visualized using various hooks for Views.
Solr and Sphinx can now be combined to effectively index large amounts of data either external or internal to Drupal, which can then be viewed and/or stored in Drupal

Mike,
This sounds great.
The meaning of Android -- 30 minutes
Android is an open source operating system for mobile. I'd like to present the architecture of Android, discuss the integration capability both internally and externally towards other cloud computing platforms, and furthermore I'd like to take Android into technology history and business context, and open up the discussion there.
Although, I will draw some connections between Android and Drupal, this presentation is not closely related to Drupal. So, I realize this topic might not interest everyone in our group. So, please vote to indicate your interest.
So long as there is a Drupal
So long as there is a Drupal plug somewhere, I think we're good. I think you have proved with Beer Cloud how well Drupal and an Android App can work together, so I'm interested to hear and learn more about Android + Drupal integration.
Also, given the open source nature of Android, I just want to hear more about Android anyway, lol.
Android +1
I'm looking forward to this presentation. Drupal opportunities in China presentation at the last meet-up was very well done. You'll be missed.
Multi sites
I'm not sure if this has been covered recently, but i would love to see a presentation, or have an in depth discussion on multisites/multiple sites set up and management with Drupal, if not a full presentation, if we could get a BoF on it, it would be extremely helpful.
up for this if anyone else
up for this if anyone else is... would like to discuss how others are managing their setups. ive been having a bunch of headaches with doing updates.. would like to see how others are doing their backups on this also. right now im trying to have a bash script dump all the databasess and backup the code base into a dropbox folder for safe keeping.
I'm up for doing a Lightning
I'm up for doing a Lightning topic.
A quick intro to http://drupal.org/project/views_area_options if anyone is interested.
Tougher Than Leather
I can talk about my RUNVSC base themes -> How to use them and how to leverage them. This will be the same talk that I gave at Designcamp Prague
As a case example, I will use the site that NorthPoint has "Drupalized" using this base theme.
Philosophy
The main ideas behind runvsc are:
So, runvsc/template.php is your best friend forever. All the functions that build your theme are available to you in your starter theme: if they don't call the function from runvsc/template.php, then they are overriden in the "current" theme's template.php. If you find the function, then you find the code to override it. Don't hack runvsc base theme; override it in your subtheme!
This will take up two slots FYI
Oh - if chosen
someone will have to take over the n00bie table -> as my johnvsc_duplicate module is only for 4.7
No D7CX pledge…?
This would probably be better implemented as hook_user_duplicate. Having a module that is hard coded to duplicate a particular Drupal user would probably not be nearly as useful.
Also very impressive that you did this in 4.7 (and thus presumably without php 5.3) but I can understand why a module like that would be a nightmare to port to a more recent version of Drupal.

Wow you guys read my mind! Everything I am interested in learning or presently struggling with.
BTW If we are meeting in Mansweaty again I plan to bring a pizza pie or 2, I almost starved to death last time..will they let me in or are they gonna frisk our slices?
Device detection
Hi all,
I could do a 5 min lightning talk about device detection in Drupal!
Added, thanks
5 min lightning talk about device detection added, thanks.
Like to see a lightning round on SimpleViews
Learned about this module recently - wondered if anyone who uses it consistently could do 5 minutes on when/how they use this - and any tips/tricks or issues related to its use.
GO HERE and CHECK NOW
Go here and check now to make sure your name is showing up on the NYC Drupal meetup list for the December meetup (if you signed up)...
http://groups.drupal.org/node/103544/signups/list
Remember if your REAL NAME is not showing up here you WON'T be on the list and therefore won't get in to our monthly meetup!
You must edit your real name in your profile on groups.drupal.org.
Data Mashups for Newbies
I am planning to give a presentation on "Data Mashups" using QueryPath and XSLT in a very general way - with not very much code - mostly what you can do with QP and XSLT, and why I think "Data Mashups" are an important part of the future for Drupal.
I also plan to show "newbies" how the use of just three contrib modules: Views, Panels and QueryPath can give you unlimited flexibility in creating data mashups with data from external sources.
I therefore suggest that I go first, as I think this will be useful and important information for people who are new to Drupal, before we break out in different groups.
Couple of scheduling notes for meetup
I'm hoping I'll be there, but in any case a couple of thoughts.
The lightning round concept I think needs some work. When Robbie suggested it (or was it Ezra) I really think the idea was very newb friendly stuff. Not sure we're there yet.
If I'm there I'll do a lightning round on "Default and automatic tagging of nodes with Taxonomy Defaults module".
Here's a couple more I think would make good lightning round topics if anyone wants to do one...
Anyone one to do one of these tomorrow? I'll be a bunch of you already have a site you can just bring up to show how one of these is used ;)
Just to note that after this
Just to note that after this meeting we will be going out for drinks, networking and holiday cheer with another group, NYCBUG (New York City BSD Users Group.)
NYCBUG has been instrumental in past years in sponsoring the semi-regular citywide IT holiday party, and the plan is to meet up with them, after their holiday meeting, at Suspenders (and not our usual place.)
This will be a great opportunity to change the pace for the holiday season for networking and good cheer with another really great NYC tech meetup group.

String over rides
I'm not sure I am the right person to do a presentation on this, but I do use this feature on one of the sites I am developing. It has been great, but I have found some limitations. For instance, not being able to override dynamic data, ie form field error messages. I've done some research and it seems that you have to use the exact text between the t() function, and if there is a variable or dynamic content in that, string overrrides is useless. But for static data that you would like to change it works well. If someone is more versed in string overrides they would be a better candidate, but if people are completely new to string over rides I would be happy to show what I have.
I think you should go for it.
I think you should go for it. I can show a few examples of how I use it as well during my presentation, and that way we can both show examples :)
