Plans?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

    • Collecting Information Quick/Easy with Webform - winston
    • Multi-site setup with Drupal 7 - esod
    • Creating and Submitting Patches - bleen18
  • Drupal Open Curriculum Report Back - winston
  • Conference Organizing Distribution (COD) Deep Dive - ezra-g
  • Aegir UI Walkthrough - skottler
  • node.js + Drupal - justinrandell
  • BOF - Drupal NYC Lecture Series - robbiethegeek
  • BOF - Drupal Camp or NYC Unconference Planning?? (if there is a quorum and interest)
  • BOF - Supporting the Drupal Open Curriculum - winston
  • BOF - Aegir Setup - skottler
  • Drupal Drinks and Drupal Fun at Suspenders

Signup Instructions!: 7 World Trade Center security checks your photo id against the list of attendees that we provide. Therefore, if your name is not on the list they will not let you in. Please ensure to put your full name in your groups.drupal.org profile. Also, Signup closes midnight of the day before the event. We don't have the luxury to add "last minute" attendees.

Drupal Open Curriculum

winston's picture

Added a "report back" on our first Drupal Intro Training Camp run as a separate event. There were about 60 students, with 4 instructors and another 4 to 6 assistant instructors.

I'll report back on the feedback from both students and instructors on the courseware and the concept.

I also added a Birds of a Feather breakout session for anyone who wants to talk about next steps for this or how to help with the Drupal Open Curriculum project!

If you don't know what I'm talking about here's a link http://groups.drupal.org/node/115279

Intro Module Dev & COD

ezra-g's picture

If folks are interested, I can potentially make a full ~45 minute-1hr presentation on Introduction to Module Development and another on COD, the Conference Organizing Distribution of Drupal.

Um, drupalcon practice ;)

winston's picture

Not that I'm complaining mind you!!

COD

winston's picture

I'd be interested in COD if you will actually go into some of the implementation details. Modules chosen, where was custom coding needed, were there hard choices, etc.

Same interest as winston

kbell's picture

I'm curious about the custom coding, implementation details, etc. too, and also plans for Drupal 7 migration. COD is one of my fave distros - I've used it on several projects, and really want to hear not intro stuff, but coding details and strategies.

Interested in COD

lp's picture

From my perspective, I'm particularly interested in logistical & UX choices.

Aegir

skottler's picture

I can do a 15-30 minute talk on Aegir. Not so much setup, but more showing off features and management. If people are interested, I can also do a walk through of the setup procedure as a BoF.

+1 Aegir, particularly within

Also interested in this as it pertains to multi-site.

node.js + Drupal

justinrandell's picture

i'm in the US pre-drupalcon, so i could do something on node.js and Drupal integration if there's any interest.

My Front End Coding environment + Theming

patoshi's picture

Suggesting 10-15 minute presentation:

I'd like to share my coding environment and go through a quick overview of why i believe e-text-editor (www.e-texteditor.com) is one of the top coding editors for theming and editing html/css in general. Also I'd like to go over some good habits while coding or customizing your theme files, good for newbies.

I mostly work in the shell in vim for on the fly editing, so i can go over that if anyone is interested.

Hopefully the projector doesnt die out again. =(

Yes! I always enjoy

capellic's picture

Yes! I always enjoy presentations that share tips and best practices.

I'd be curious to know what you think about CSS Watch, a new module that refreshes the browser automatically every time a CSS theme file is updated. I just used it and it eliminated the need for me to have to refresh on my main browser (FF) and IE on the computer next to me - I could just glance over and see, "OK, IE 7 didn't throw up on that bit, good!" It was very handy and facilitated me testing on IE throughout the CSS process instead of dealing with it at the end. If you like it, maybe you can add it to your presentation?

http://drupal.org/project/css_watch

tats a pretty awesome module!

patoshi's picture

tats a pretty awesome module! ill definitely bring that up. thanks for saving me a bunch of reloads and shift f5's from now on. im surprised no one thought of that sooner. its pretty interesting that these simple ideas are so obvious after the fact.

another thing i might bring up is my coding setup and which are good keyboards for coders. my preferred is the usb thinkpad touchpoint keyboards since the mouse is right next to your finger and you'd save alot of time from moving your arm to reach for the mouse. until the day comes where we can code telepathically we can only figure out which devices to save us time while coding. another popular coder keyboard is the kenisis or the uber expensive datahand keyboard. anyone else want to share their coding setup?

new member

Rao Rampilla's picture

Hi, I am a new member and I like to come to your meetings. Could someone advise me about a meeting that I can attend? Meanwhile I like to meet some drupal member-how could I do that?

hi Rao, if you like to come

patoshi's picture

hi Rao, if you like to come to the meetups just click the "sign up" button on the top of the page and they will have your name on the list. After that is confirmed you can just show up at the meeting at the address above.

I have hard time finding that

Rao Rampilla's picture

I have hard time finding that "sign up" for March 2nd event. I guess ignorance not a bliss in my case. There got to be a easy way. One of the reasons I am coming is that the people that built my website using drupal are shutting their web server by Feb 28 and I have to find a new web host for my website. They said that I could find someone in the group that could help me suggest web hosting service that is reasonable and even help. They said they would make available a tarball of my current site plus data base. Ignorant as I am confused and clueless and desperate for help. thank you.

Rao, be sure you're logged in

kbell's picture

Rao, be sure you're logged in - you can't see the signup button unless you're logged in, I believe. Hope to meet you March 2nd! Welcome!

Just found out that I'm doing a 7-minute lightening talk on "Creating & submitting patches" at DrupalCon ... can I do a practice run a this meetup?

As a bonus, people will learn how to create a patch and submit them :)

Topics Topics

winston's picture

Could still use a Lighting round topic. Think putting the pieces together for newbies. Something not hard to show in 5 min, but not obvious to less experienced Drupal folks.

I think we're good on primary topics if we get a deep dive on COD, node.js integration, and Aegir...

see my comment above ... :)

I just posted a discussion

robbiethegeek's picture

I just posted a discussion about my idea for a Drupal Lecture Series (http://groups.drupal.org/node/130819) if we have interest / time maybe we can do this as a BoF.

Aegir

no go...

patoshi's picture

Sorry wont be able to make it this month for my presentation, but if anyone is still interested about coding environments I can do it next month. Or if anyone likes I can talk about the new Google Algorithm update that has happened in the past moth incorporating social search and how it has changed the seo playing field for both white/black hatters.

Portable presentation device?

winston's picture

Anyone can bring a portable presentation device? There is an outside chance the one at MV won't be functional tonight.

If it is non-functional and no one can bring a spare then we'll do more breakout sessions/BOFs and less presentations.

Disregard

winston's picture

Disregard my previous comment. MV projector is working so we're good. See you soon

Digital Rhino will!

skottler's picture

@winston, DR can bring our projector along.

See you then!

Can't come tonight after all :(

kbell's picture

Hey everyone,

This sucks beyond belief - I REALLY needed to be at the meeting tonight - but I just had a brand new client call me with an emergency issue on their live site (I haven't touched it yet, so have no idea how long it's going to take). It's looking very unlikely that I will make it tonight. This is I think the second time this almost-exact thing has happened in the last 4 months. I wish I understood why fate seems to want me to stay home on Wednesday nights. :(

Justin, I would really like to hear you talk about node.js - if you record your talk, may I get a copy?

The worst part is missing the planning session for the upcoming unconference in April, and planning stuff for DC - please forgive me guys. I still am planning to help as discussed in the list - I just won't make the meeting tonight.

I'm not going to cancel my signup, because it's too late to do anyone any good anyway (the list has already gone upstairs, I'm sure).

See you all in Chicago!

tonight's meeting

joebachana's picture

Am really wiped, still suffering from jetlag, although I really wanted to make the NYC Unconference BoF. If this planning session does happen tonight, let me know what I can do to help organize the event. Also, my organization will help with sponsorship money.

Unable to make it tonight

fureigh's picture

Unable to make it tonight after all, but I look forward to hearing more about the unconference (and node.js, if someone records the presentation or takes notes). I may be able to help with sponsorship as well.
