This is the transcript from IRC shorty before you posted this. Not saying its the only way, but it might be an alternative to making new training vids.

[12:59] RobLoach: I was thinking that we could have a "beginner's Drupal" session where we go over installing and explaining the structures
[12:59] I would be up for hosting that talk
[13:00] I jsut finished a couple of years teaching college classes in DC
[13:00] Great idea! From beginning to end.
[13:00] so, i have aplan of attack
[13:00] also, since the "developing for designers" was knocked out of Drupal Groups,
[13:01] I have been writing content for it
[13:01] and, actually
[13:01] working on a method for disseminating information to newbies
[13:01] I think litwol's idea of maybe doing two monthy meetups one for beginners and one for advanced might not be bad.
[13:02] As I know a few people who thought it wasn't in depth enough.
[13:02] very information design oriented: lots of css classes to denote types of content in a 508/CSS/SEO compliancy
[13:02] Yeah, I agree...
[13:02] One of the things, though, is that the beginner sessions should be kind of ongoing
[13:03] meaning that, first timers should get on a list
[13:03] and when we have a certain quanity... we do a "from scratch- recap"
[13:04] that would be a session for newbies to catch up... but not every month
[13:04] and then we talk abotu more advance concepts
[13:04] or... wait, this is better
[13:05] just record them and put them online ...
[13:06] and then point to them instead: in addition, provide a written "cheat sheet" so that they can review and follow along.
[13:06] too many ideas...
[13:06] as usual
[13:10] yeah, lots of video out there already.

[13:10] http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1412997312232368487

[13:12] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV__oOckAPM
[13:14] more specific but still for beginners: http://blip.tv/search/?topic_name=drupal%20dojo
[13:14] there are literally HUNDREDS of intro videos out there.
[13:15] so, rather than starting from scratch... maybe we create a page with all the great links?
[13:15] we need a site to sort and categorize all them
[13:16] you could make an index of current online videos
[13:17] setup a rating system so users/viewrs could vote on quility
[13:17] drupal video deliciouis
[13:17] yeah...something like that could work
[13:18] http://del.icio.us/search/?fr=del_icio_us&p=drupal+video&type=all
[13:19] 1830 results
[13:20] more betterer
[13:20] be a good place to start pulling in links... then use drupal to message... catgeorize
[13:21] drupaldojo.com did that for there own videos, but is currently having DNS issues
[13:21] let anyone categorize
[13:21] emfield would embed vids on the site... then encourage peeps to tag
[13:21] just thinkin aloud here ;)
[13:22] great idea
[13:25] <-- AlexUA has left this server (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)).
[13:27] so who wants to set it up?
[13:27] lol

I agree with this idea of

tom_o_t's picture

I agree with this idea of creating a page in the documentation that pulls this together - then the whole Drupal community benefits.

When I did my intro session at the last DrupalCamp I suggested filming it, but someone wisely made exactly the same point as in the above discussion.

Some one mentioned project

Some one mentioned project such as Caltora which allows community video annotation after it's been put online. we could utilize such system to help build video documentation with community's help

Kaltura allows for collaborative video editing.

Someone else mentioned that the developers are considering writing a Drupal module, since they have one for WordPress already.

some one suggested that

some one suggested that developers should consider, not that they are considering :-p

No?

Looks like it's in the pipeline as a Drupal module....

Excellent idea

Will take a look at that delicious list. Here is a quick post from Nov 2007 with 20 newb videos...

http://www.mydrupal.com/drupal-beginner-videos-basics

But a dedicated site that allows categorization would be best for sure. Maybe we can have at least some sort of list to refer folks to for the next Drupal camp??

All that said though, no substitute for a live session. Also, newb videos especially get outdated pretty fast. The problem is because there is not a real live person to stop and ask a question or clarification, anything that doesn't work for the viewer exactly as in the video becomes a source of frustration and confusion. Intro training is actually one of the harder types of training to design for non-synchronous delivery as a result. Just imagine a video from 4 months ago talking about how to set up a site and make it cool for Drupal 6. If you were doing it today you'd want to include CCK and maybe views at least, but they weren't ready then.

Kaltura

This is Luciana. I have been in touch with the people from kaltura, who have a very good way of making collaborative video online.
I have mentioned to them that there interface is in word press but that Drupal might be into using this as a platform.
I would like to know if anyone is interested in talking to me about this further, as I have a meeting with the NY representatives planned for next week.
Is anyone into looking into this?
Cheers

I was messing around with Kaltura a bit and it's pretty impressive!

We need an open bounty for someone to start Drupal integration. /me goes to check out the API.

So are we going to have the proposed dates of Aug 23rd and 24th for Drupal Camp?
Should I call POLYTECHNIC and resevre the spot?
Also, can last years organizers send me the list of sponsors with contact details aos I can start getting in touch with them?
Thanks
Luciana

Aug 23-24th is bad

cwgordon7's picture

Aug 23-24th conflicts with Drupalcon for me, at the very least - I'm leaving on the 24th.

I have nearly 20GB of raw

litwol's picture

I have nearly 20GB of raw footage from July 30th meetup. While i'm planning to experiment with some editing for my own presentation (god i wish i never spoken about js messages.. useless feature LOL), i want the raw footage to be available for the community to try to edit or do w/e they want with it.

Now, i have no clue where to host these files and 20 GB quickly exceeds any starter level VPS packages... i am open for suggestions on where i can upload this to make available for the public.

no need for 20g

jb_in_nyc's picture

low-res is WAY more practical, and if someone wants the high-res they'll ask you. All the edits can be committed off the low res using most any decent editing software.

That is way too much footage.

linxlab's picture

Nearly half of the footage is off camera conversations which should be edited out first. Also, video editing is not a collaborative process. Too many cooks. I suggest one person work on the entire edit from one location until it's complete then thinking about distribution methods.

My Vision for a Drupal Video Tutorial.

linxlab's picture

My main goal is to help the beginners through drupal's steep learning curve. I would like to create a series of Video Tapes that systematically go through drupal in a step by step way. For starters we can shoot the next Drupal Meet-up and DrupalCamp in a way the is visually appealing and easy to follow along with.

Here are my suggestions.

1- Record the a screen capture of the presentation computer using software like Techsmiths Camtaisa Studio. (http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp) Then have a mic connected to a laptop that records the speaker. Please note the speaker should repeat all questions asked by the audience before answering just in case the mic did not pick up the question. Ideally we would have a second mic for audience questions but this might be asking a lot.

2- Video tape the speaker NOT the screen. The reason being once the video is put on the web it is often very hard to read the code or powerpoint. The viewer will ended up watching a video that you can't follow along with. I have watched many drupal tutorial video where you can't read or see what the presenter is doing.

3- If there is a camera person they should pan to the audience when questions are asked to make the video more interesting. If that is not possible we can just shoot a wide shoot of the entire room so one can see the presenter and the audience.

4- In the final editing stage we can synchronize the screen capture video with the presentation footage in a picture in picture format. Small video of the presenter speaking and a large video of the computer screen capture footage. The best example of this type of video are the Mac Keynote Presentations when Steve Jobs is speaking.

Granted this is the ideal way to shoot these educational tutorials. With the Drupal Camp the challenge is that there are multiple presentations and trainings happening at the same time so we need to choose which ones to shoot.

We may not have the man power or resources to create something like this. However, if anyone is interested in volunteering resources, or time please let me know. You can reach me at edwin {at} linxlab {dot} com.

What do you think?
