So lets get the show on the road. What topics do you guys want to discuss/present at the next meetup?

So far proposed is: NYC Community Skillshare Idea: Subversion for Drupal ( http://groups.drupal.org/node/15238 )

Also I've met a pretty cool guy that is sold hardcore on Ruby on Rails. Since we had a very nice joomla presentation few months back, i wonder if you guys would like to also hear about RnR.

There are tons of other fun topics and things to show off at the next meetup. so lets see what you guys are craving.

Thoughts on the next meetup

johnvsc's picture

I would like to continue / re-enforce our relationship with the design communities by having a "open" session / table where we can discuss practical aspects of working with Drupal.

For example: I would like to talk about functionality recipes ... and how to contribute to our great community

Thoughts?

Oh, when is the date. I know that some of us are going out to give a pres at the long island linux club ... so i don't want to conflict with that...

No dates yet. i want to get

Newbie thoughts

I'm fairly new to this whole Drupal thing. So, my preference would be for something like custom theming how-to.

I can show a module(dev)

skyredwang's picture

I am working on a module called BornFree that let Galleria (Google Summer Codes 2005, http://devkick.com/lab/galleria/) work with Drupal. Also, I extended the text functionality of Galleria. If people are interested in image gallery + splash page. I can do a demo.

Yes!

I would love to see it!

PS: I meant seeing the Galleria demo, but my reply didn't tree under skyred's message...

Database Health for Designers

ricardoom's picture

One thing that keeps me up at night is the state of my database and if ive done something to make it vulnerable or unstable. So it might be cool to have a guru go through some basic steps we [designers] can do help keep it healthy and secure through the development phase and on and on...

what say you?

Me too.

jpowell-gdo's picture

I'm not as strong on the programming and network side as others in the group and would be very interested in some best practices!

Mobile Drupal

twom's picture

Drupal "support" for display on mobile phones would be an ineteresting topic.
Someone with experience in this matter that want to share some knowledge/issues? Can Drupal make a differentiator above other CMS system because of support for mobility?

I hope the meeting takes place between 14 and 22 october :)

My vote for date is the week

I know a potential solution to the Mobile world and I have implemented one (hard coded, Please browse this with iPhone or Android, Beer Sommelier at http://greatbrewers.com/sommelier , it uses CMS + Ajax + iUI).

I'd Like to See Mobile As Well

stuart-gdo's picture

I'd be curious to see best practices for Drupal mobile-phone/pda/smart-phone development, and/or porting existing sites into mobile ones. Anyone have any experience (good or bad) they'd like to share?

I would second that.

jpowell-gdo's picture

I would second that. I have a client who wants to launch a mobile version of his Drupal site and insight here would definitely be helpful.

Thirded

tom_o_t's picture

I'm starting to look into Drupal for mobile platforms but haven't got far at all. One thing I'm trying to figure out is automatic detection of devices and linking that to theme switching.

Discussion of Acquia?

ceo3141's picture

I would like to hear a discussion of what the release of Acquia means for Drupal. There is a Community Version for free; is it cost-effective/most efficient to use that for many basic client installations? I have not had a chance to really look at it, so if there is someone who has by the meetup, I would be very interested in what he/she has to say.

I might have time to look at it in depth in a month or so.

If you are not willing to

marketanomaly's picture

If you are not willing to pay the acquia support fee, it probably doesn't make sense to use the acquia installation of Drupal. Not to worry though. They contribute nearly all of their modules back to the Drupal community. You'll just have to download and install those modules yourself instead of having them all in one installation package. I'd be happy to talk about that, if people want more info.

Acquia Drupal

cpelham's picture

If one uses the Acquie Drupal installation, is it still possible to install additional modules, or are you locked into their exact installation?

Acquia Drupal works just like regular Drupal

marketanomaly's picture

Acquia Drupal works just like regular Drupal. Acquia Drupal is currently just Drupal 6.4 with a bunch of extra modules stuck in the modules directory. Acquia has focused mostly on improving the core set of modules they support. I don't think they have or plan to fork the base drupal code at all. This wouldn't be very advantageous for them as they would then create a proprietary system that they are solely responsible for maintaining.

Correction from previous comment: I guess it might make sense to use the free Carbon version of Drupal simply to cut down on the time you spend downloading and updating modules.

Meetup is on the 22nd :). i
