DrupalCon Denver is less than a week ago. Is anyone making the trip out west? Anyone interested in meeting for dinner? Is anyone going on the official Drupalcon Ski & Board Trip? Is this anyone's first time to a Drupalcon? Anyone familiar with the Denver area and is willing to give tips?

Thanks
Melissa

I would be interested in a New York West dinner get together....keep me in the loop.

I haven't officially signed up for the official DrupalCon Ski trip, but since I'm staying until Sunday, I might sign up (if it's not too late).

I'll be there

Here are some restaurant suggestions. Does anyone have a preference or other suggestions?

Ted's Montana Grill

This well-known Denver restaurant was founded by media mogul Ted Turner. While people don't often use the words "steak house" and "eco-friendly" in the same sentence, the restaurant prints its menus on recycled paper and has a goal of becoming 99-percent plastic-free. The restaurant offers a variety of made-from-scratch entrees, which include premium beef and National Bison Association-certified bison. It is also famous for its creative burgers, which come in variations such as blue cheese and jalapeno. Prices are moderate. Ted's Montana Grill 1401 Larimer St. Denver, CO 80202-1704 303-893-0654 tedsmontanagrill.com

Elway's

Founded by former Bronco's quarterback John Elway, this restaurant is famous for its USDA hand-cut steaks as well as its popular raw-food bar. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner. Given its location in the Ritz Carlton Hotel, it is pricey and formal. Elway's 1881 Curtis St. Denver, CO 80202-1902 303-312-3107 elways.com

Capital Grille

This popular dining venue is known for its large, dry-aged steaks, which are paired with an extensive wine list. Some people simply enjoy its unique Art Deco decor. This upscale restaurant is located in Denver's historic Larimer Square. Capital Grille 1450 Larimer St. Denver, CO 80202 303-539-2500 thecapitalgrille.com

Emil-Lene's Sirloin House

Not all of Denver's steak houses are formal and upscale. This unpretentious local favorite has been open for over 44 years and boasts enormous, juicy burgers, 12-oz. sirloin strips, tasty fillets and 24-oz. T-bone steaks. Emil-Lene's Sirloin House 16000 E. Smith Rd. Aurora, CO 80011 303-366-6674 sirloinhouse.com

The Brokers Restaurant

Dry-aged prime cut beef served in Victorian elegance make this a popular restaurant for visitors to Denver. It also features Murder Mystery Nights. The Brokers Restaurant 821 17th St. Denver, CO 80202-3040 303-292-5065

The Keg Steak House & Bar

This is one of Denver's more casual and affordable restaurants, and the friendly waitstaff is quite knowledgeable about the food, which adds to its popularity. The Keg Steak House & Bar 1890 Wynkoop St. Denver, CO 80202 303-296-0023 kegsteakhouse.com

The Buckhorn Exchange

This is an excellent choice if you are interested in visiting a museum as well as eating at a steakhouse. Its hunting-lodge decor features artifacts from Denver's cowboy days, and the restaurant specializes in steak, elk, quail and salmon. The Buckhorn Exchange 100 Osage St. Denver, CO 80204 303-534-9505

Sullivan's Steakhouse

This is another place where a friendly, knowledgeable staff complements a solid menu. The waitstaff will ask you about your taste preferences and make entree suggestions based on your answers. The bone-in Cowboy Ribeye is one popular specialty. Sullivan's Steakhouse 1745 Wazee St. Denver, CO 80202 303-295-2664 sullivansteakhouse.com

1515 Market Grill

Romantic lighting, enticing pairings of entrees and side dishes make this a favorite for locals and visitors. The restaurant specializes in using locally grown ingredients. The nightly jazz and blues adds to the ambiance. 1515 Market Grill 1515 Market St. Denver, CO 80202 303-571-0011 1515restaurant.com

Denver Chophouse and Brewery

This traditional, upscale restaurant is located in the historic Union Pacific Railway building. It's known for its porterhouse steaks, extensive wine menu, and fine selection of bourbons and single malt scotches. Denver Chophouse and brewery 1735 19th St. Denver, CO 80202 303-296-0800 chophouse.com

The Bucksnort Saloon

marvs5's picture

If you have a car (or cars for a group), there's a great place to eat about an hour drive out of Denver in the Rockies. The place is called The Bucksnort Saloon. The views are amazing, food good and the atmosphere is humorous/irreverant. I won't be at DrupalCon due to a commitment in Michigan, but many of you might find the place interesting. Just check their hours as it varies by time of year.

I'll have a Midsize car

I'd be interested in getting together with NYC community folks for something while we're out there...guess we'll figure it out on irc while there?

I'm also toying with the idea of renting a bike out there and trying to go for a ride very early one morning of the conference. If anyone's interested, please DM me.

Would also love a bike ride around Denver, if the pace is kept at a manageable level ie more in the name of tourism than sports.

But yes, let's setup a NYC DrupalCon dinner!

Let's also do this in NYC

lisarex's picture

I'm a maybe for dinner! As much as it would be good to finally meet all of you, we should do dinner in NYC!

DrupalCon is all about hanging out with the people who you don't get an opportunity to see because they live halfway around the world. ;)

re: nyc in Denver

joebachana's picture

Lisarex is right in that there's loads of people we get to see only 1x/year from all over the world. However, it also can be a little lonely at Drupalcon, particularly for people going for the first time. Thus, an NYC meet up would be nice, even if just as a BoF. Another suggestion might just be an early meet up for coffee or breakfast one morning.

As for cycling, I promise it would be just a touring thing. Forssto+Steven, I'll hit you both up off g.d.o with some ideas, did some research on rental places that in a pinch we could get bikes from on a lark in the unlikelihood of us finding ourselves time to do a ride there...

Joe, good point. I sometimes forget what it's like to be the new kid. :) If you don't know that many people, then meeting others early in the conference is really good idea.

There's plenty of BoF slots available for Tuesday morning. http://denver2012.drupal.org/schedule-bof so I just went ahead and reserved a spot: http://denver2012.drupal.org/bof/greater-nyc-community-meetup

We can move it to another time if needed.

From NYC - but live in Denver

timmvt's picture

I'm originally from NYC but moved to Denver so I have a good level of familiarity with the city.
A couple of tips:

  • There is a free shuttle bus that runs up and down the 16th Street Mall (AKA the Mall Ride), which stops at every intersection on the mall. It runs way past the times that the bars close (2am). Most downtown hotels are within walking distance of the convention center.

  • From the airport to downtown(in descending order of cost): you can take a cab, Super Shuttle or RTD's "AF" bus.

  • Denver does have a bike-sharing program so you can get out and pedal. There are also trails along the rivers that run throughout Denver which can be bicycled, jogged, walked without vehicular interruption.

  • To oystercrackher's point: these are some great restaurants. There is also Little India, Appaloosa Grill, The Yardhouse, Maggiano's, Oceanaire and Sushi Sasa.

  • Lastly, there is a company called Colorado Mountain Express which offers shuttle service to the mountains if someone wants to ski, board, telemark.

If you have any questions, please ask.

Hope this helps and I look forward to meeting you at DrupalCon!

Bike Rental?

chancakes's picture

Sounds like a brilliant idea. Do you know of a bike rental place?

re: this evening and also bike rental

joebachana's picture

First off, I'll meet people at the Hyatt Regency lobby around 7:15pm, anyone who wants to walk or cab over to the party I'll be happy to escort.

Second, I rented a bike from The Bike Doctor www.bicycledr.com. They actually dropped it off in my room last night, its just $10 extra for the drop off. They rented me a Fuji Roubeaux, which isn't a bad road bike. I'm going to try to grab some rides over the next few days whenever I can, but probably best to just DM me if you want to go along.
