Plans?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

    • bg1 Pitch
    • "How to Say It" ~ amycham
    • drupal.org case studies ~ lisarex
  • 20 Min Talks
Have a topic that needs more then 5 minutes, we have slots of 20 minute talks. The basic idea is there are broader subjects or more detailed discussions this is the type of talk you would want to signup for, please mention 20 min talk when posting your talk description and the audience you expect to speak to.

    • Anonymous Create - Register ~ flacoman91
    • Mobile First ~ alienresident
    • Page Caching and Invalidation ~ Steven Merrill
  • We will also have the New 2 Drupal BoF(birds of a feather). If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.

Signup Instructions!: 7 World Trade Center security checks your photo id against the list of attendees that we provide.

lightening round

Can I do a demo of a d6 module I've been working on to allow users to create a node anonymously and then force user registration for a lightening round?

If anyone wants to try this for their drupal 6 site here's a link to the sandbox project I've created.

drupal.org case studies

lisarex's picture

Can I get a 5 min slot to promote the new d.o. case studies? Just an overview what they are, what we need in terms of new case studies, people to help review them etc. :)

20 minutes on LSD

jpklein's picture

Can I get a 20 minute slot to workshop an idea for the Large-Scale Drupal Content Staging Initiative? I promise lots of geekery about core patches and a heartfelt discussion about way-out use cases.

Sorry all

jpklein's picture

Sorry, an issue's come up that keeps me from coming to tonight's meetup. Hopefully, I'll be able to present sometime soon.

Still open slots...

If you want to present and haven't signed up yet there is some openings still for either 5 min lightening talks, or 20 min deep dives. Please post a comment with your ideas...

"How to Say It"?

amybrate's picture

Last time, it was noted that help explaining Drupal concepts could be useful. Anyone interested in a "How to Say It" lightning talk to translate a Drupalese concept into English?

(If you are interested, please be sure to suggest a concept to break down!)

Okay...maybe I'll just explain the idea I had for this kind of lightning talk as a regular thing to gauge interest and see if it's something we want to do going forward, maybe collect some ideas for topics?

If someone else wants my spot, I can put my inquiry out on a thread here.

Page Caching and Invalidation

Steven Merrill's picture

I'd like to propose a 20-minute on one of my favorite subjects, caching. Specifically, page caching and the ever-sticky problem of cache invalidation.

I'd like to give a rundown of the different levers you can turn when using the following page cache methods in Drupal 7:

  • Default database-backend page caching
  • Memcache-based page caching
  • Varnish

I can then talk about some of the options out there for clearing only certain pages from your cache:

  • Cache Tags (the D8 core issue and the D7 backport)
  • Varnish module
  • Purge module

And finally, a few more advanced topics:

  • Opting out of page caching for module devs
  • Optimizing Varnish for frequent cache clears

I would like to give this a

Work has not let up these

Work has not let up these last few days, so this won't be in as good of shape as I would like. I might end up talking about it far more than showing.

Mobile First interactive prototyping

alienresident's picture

I can do a lightning talk on "Mobile First" interactive prototyping using OmniGraffle. I am redesigning a number of sites at the moment and we are moving from a static 960 grid to mobile first responsive design.

I have been trying out various tools and techniques to do prototyping. I can present for 5 mins on OmniGraffle. If there's enough interest I can do longer talk on other methods, such as paper prototyping and Fireworks.

The final day is today 5/3/12. It includes the book Eric mentioned "Design and Prototyping for Drupal" by Dani Nordin, which I also recommend. And of course Thomas Turnball's "Mapping with Drupal". I read the 1st edition of "Using Drupal" and it was one of the best Drupal intro books.

Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark

Lightning Round

bg1's picture

I would like to make a short appeal for a small amount of Drupal Design Assistance for a non-profit effort to promote educational achievement.

I designed web-based business applications for years (Microsoft - no PHP). My focus was database architecting and presenting the user with forms, reports, etc. without worrying about the looks of the user interface.

I am now involved in a non-profit effort to improve academic achievement on a national scale and trying to use Drupal for an informational web site that describes what we are trying to do and why and encourage involvement and discussion.

We have a rudimentary Drupal web site (on Drupal Gardens for the time being), but I am very lost with the design aspects of making the site effective.

I am hoping someone might be able to help with some design assistance such as finding effective themes and modifying those themes to present the content in a engaging manner and perhaps sugesting other out-of-the-box functionality that might be useful for this site.

Thanks.

Bill Graham
