Hey Folks,

Today, I am happy to publish the PDO Project Development Plan, which includes detailed site maps, a suggested module listing, and other information for developers helping out with PDO... (yes, there is a beer in the near future ;-) The team and I expect and welcome questions from all, hence the creation of this group, so feel free to make comments, offer suggestions, and/or ask questions at will. You can download the PDO Project Development Plan with this link:

[Updated Sept. 21st, 2009]

The PDO prototype that you all saw during the presentation will be re-launched in Drupal about this time next week, but in the meantime the prototype can be found at www.povertysdemise.org. Also, if any of you missed the presentation and would like a guided tour... just let me know and we'll make arrangements. ;-)

Thanks in advance for all of your efforts and patience.

Poverty's Demise

Kipp Elliott Watson's picture

Hi Darryl,

I reviewed pdo_pdp.pdf, which has a suggested list of Drupal modules for a proverty's demise website. It is very helpful for a project that I have just started with a group of people in New Jersey. I'll keep you posted on this exciting development.

In the meanwhile, can you please check on the permissions settings in the sandbox at povertysdemise.net? I registered but was locked out of access to the administration page, list of modules and theme settings. Not having this type of access makes it difficult to come up with any type of prototype.

By the way, Professor Muhammed Yunus will be speaking at the 92nd Street Y on Wednesday, September 23 at 6 p.m. I think that his Nobel Prize winning concepts regarding the use of micro-loans for the purpose of local economic empowerment could be very helpful in refining your vision for ending poverty. If the $27 admission fee is a bit steep for you, let me know and I'll cover it.

Ciao for now,

Kipp

Would you like to view the values of all site variables one line at a time while your Drupal code is running on a multisite installation on Vista, using open source Eclipse and Xdebug? Visit http://sites.google.com/site/drupaldebugmultisite/ for details.

Hi Kipp,

Sorry for the delayed reply. I thought that a good way for the crew to learn the drupal framework was to re-build the PDO prototype in drupal. Took a little longer because we are non programming newbies, but the prototype looks light years better in a drupal theme. We are all now drupal disciples ;-)

With regards to access to the website, we've made some adjustments check back now and you should be able to create an account (once you have an account we can give you an additional permissions). With regards to Yunus, I think I will take you up on your offer on Tuesday, drop me an email darryl@povertysdemise.org. I have had a lot of discussions with various microfinance groups and what everyone has realized is that if PDO donation methodology is combined with the correct local microfinance program, we essentially create very refined economic development tool that can accelerate market activity in poor areas and/or nations (inner-city's or inner-deserts ;-)

The PDO website is based more on macroeconomics than the dev plan and prototype reflect. I plan to publish my writings on PDO's economic dynamics once we are on a stable and clear development path. But since you have a working knowledge of microfinance I will give you a quick preview:

PDO as "Economic Development Tool"

PDO uses the Internet to send donations directly to the impoverished –consumers‐ in a given market, whereas
microfinance programs such as Grameen Bank & Kiva.org direct wealth to the impoverished‐businessmen /
entrepreneurs‐ of a given market.

By sending donations directly into the hands of impoverished ‐consumers‐, this dynamic increases the
revenue opportunities for impoverished local businessmen / entrepreneurs that are currently being supported through various
microfinance projects.

For instance:

An impoverished businessperson / entrepreneur that is currently receiving Kiva.org loans or Grameen Bank microfinance
support may one day awaken to discover that his/her customers are doubling, tripling, even quadrupling their orders for
subsistence related items such as food and medicine because of newly acquired economic buying power delivered to them by
Povertyʹs Demise .Org e-Gift Certificates.

PDO Hackathon 1 Oct. 25th in Brooklyn

Ghetto_Prodigy's picture

Date: October 25th
Location: 266 Washington Ave, Apt A1, Brooklyn, NY 11205
Start: 11 AM
Finish: 6 PM
IRC Server: irc.freenode.net
Channel: : #povertysdemise

For more info contact developer@povertysdemise.org

I am happy to announce PDO's first hackathon. In this session we will tackle some of the core issues related to the site (identifying the custom modules to be built, converting some modules to needs, and so forth).

Snacks will be served and towards the end..(for obvious reasons ;-) the elixir of life, beer, will be served.

Project Concept:

Poverty’s Demise .Org (PDO) can be thought of as a technological road map for self-sustainable child poverty
alleviation that is a combination of Facebook, PayPal, and eBay, except PDO is nonprofit, open-source, and
pacifist. Donors and poor children receive web-based user profiles (like Facebook). Using a Donor Portal connected
to support accounts, which hold cash donations (like PayPal), donors can purchase specific social welfare related
items from a simple shopping cart interface (like eBay). The Social Welfare Shopping Cart represents the sum total
of all of a child’s needs for healthy development (food, clothing, shelter, health-care, education, etc.). In the future,
if every child born into poverty has a full social welfare shopping cart from PDO tax deductible donations, poverty
will end.

Visit the prototype to understand the website you can help build and help millions of people:
