I have this incredibly selfish idea that maybe a few other people are into. I want to do a few skillshare sessions
I'm insanely behind on a lot of personal projects that I would really like to get done soon. Much of what I need done is basic work around theming, installation and configuration. The problem is that there is a lot of work to be done and since they are personal projects I don't have a budget to pay anyone to help me (nor am I making money of the site to promise future riches).
This is what I'm proposing.
I will teach YOU how to configure, tweak and theme a Drupal 5.x site.
In return you will work on my site.
The vision:
Myself and several other people, that are into this, will meet at a to-be-determined location. We'll keep some pizza and beer and discuss the task at hand. Then I'll walk everyone through the steps that need to be done focusing on the various pieces that each individual is interested in. We'll build the site, configure and theme it right then and there. I'll be working too and helping everyone to learn whatever it is that he/she wanted came to learn about.
The site being worked on (i.e. my benefit) would be my personal project.
So you get to learn about Drupal from a real live person
and I get my personal projects further down the road to completion
Maybe someone is interested in this?
Tasks that would be covered
-Installation/configuration of Drupal 5.1
-Module installation/configuration
-Gmap, Location, CCK and Views modules (install, config, tweak)
-Theming.. lots of theming
-Talk of module development and possible module development depending on if its needed
The project in particular is a mapping site for community groups. Similar to the Cmtickets.com a built a while back.
Of course this is NOT the only way to learn Drupal. If you're new to Drupal check out the Drupal Dojo, the IRC channels, Drupal Docs and google searches. Help is definitely out there. But if you prefer face to face learning maybe you'd be into this?
Personally I think its a good trade.. fair on both sides. Come'on let me exploit your talents for my own personal gain!
Oh I'd like to do this sometime later this week. Maybe Wednesday or Thursday? Or in a few weeks...

Comments
Skillshare is exactly what i need.
You may exploit my talents if I can exploit your knowledge!
I will happily trade work for skills. Tell me where and when and I will be there.
I've got more years creating digital workflows than most at the meetup have walking.
The only problem is with my current skillset I end up with .pdf and .jpg instead of .html, .php or node, which is what I now need.
Keep me posted.
Charles
Mutual Exploitation
mmmm... Is there anything better than mutual exploitation? ;)

Helping with the mapping/location stuff
I've got pretty limited free time, but I'd definitely be interested in helping with the mapping side of things because I know you've done a lot there already and I'd like to learn from that. CMTickets.com is a great site - very interesting & worthwhile.
Cheers,
Thomas

Great Idea
I would love to see this be the primary way that this group interacts. Sharing knowledge and experience while working to assist projects that really deserve the attention is a great real-world expression of the community-centric nature of Free / Open Source software.
Sounds interesting!
I need to make my knowledge of Drupal theming more solid and your proposal sounds very interesting,
I also plan to attend the May meeting at "MNN" for the first time, do I need to register before hand?
Cool
I'm glad that other people are into this and I'm not crazy going down the exploitation path. I think this is a good share of knowledge and time.
If others are interested please speak up so I can start scheduling this. I'd like to do it soon.
Also I'll try to note what is good/bad about and create a model that others can work off of. I think its a basic model that can really help a lot of people out.

I need to play in the sandbox.
Exploitation is a one way street.
What you have proposed is trade and that benfits both parites.
In the words of the immortal Miyagi "Wax on, Wax off."
Dates
Would Wednesday (tomorrow) night or Thursday night work for anyone here? I'm thinking of doing this on one or both of the nights from 6pm until 8pm up to 10ish (depending on how everything goes).
I figured we could do it from either MNN or if they are only a few people head up to my place and get some pizza and beer.

I'm unavailable Tonight and Thursday
Next week Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday would work
I could make one evening
I could manage either tonight (Wed) or tomorrow (Thurs), though not both - so just let me know which evening would be most useful (preferably the one you're planning to work on the mapping side).

Thursday sounds good to me!
I can make it on Thursday nights, it will be my first trip to the city after a while! Coming from Westchester-Bronx border. I am eager to learn more drupal skills.
Ok. Thursday evening
We'll be a gmap based site from the ground up. It is similar to cmtickets.com but focused on geographical terrain and sites.
Ask more questions if you got them. I can get crazy specific.
Also I want to point out that everything you learn in this session can be directly applied to the US Social Forum work (posted early); should you want to get involved in that (you should ;) ). I'll train ya and you go off and do good work!
For those that can't make it this Thursday, we'll try one of these again in a few weeks before the next meetup. I'll schedule it 3 weeks out so everyone could plan (I kinda expected to be spanked on this one to be honest; You know the whole white-man exploitation thing 'n all).

worth it to arrive late?
Sorry for the super late response...I can probably make it tonight, but not until about 7:00pm, and I'd be without laptop. Think there's any point in joining? Or just wait 'til the next one of these?
The more the merrier
The more the merrier IMHO.
in the least you will be able to learn what jredding is going to present to us.
