We're having this month's meeting on Drupal's birthday - January 15th!
This will be a special meeting with special presentations on Drupal on the occasion of its 13th birthday, along with pizza & beer & birthday cake. Don't miss this very special 1st meetup of the year

As previously announced, in addition to a wild and out of control birthday party for Drupal, we'll also have a number of presentations taking a look at Drupal theming, as well as other topics such as fast local development using Kalabox.

Location
CPX INteractive

Topics?
This month's meetup focuses on all aspects of Drupal including theming. We'll have a number of really great presentations on Drupal in general as well as Front End Design and Development for Drupal. And of course a celebration of Drupal's 13th (!) birthday!

Afterwards?
We're still selecting the new location for our regular post-meeting mixer event. If you have any suggestion, please post in comments!

RSVP
Please remember to register using the signup button on this page. (You have to be logged in.) Note that signing up on meetup.com does not register you for the meeting, you must rsvp on groups.drupal.org. Final list will be given to the venue at 10pm on January 14th (the evening before the meetup)

Agenda?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below in comments. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation. Lightning rounds do not have to be related to this month's topic

    • "Community Plumbing" - seanr
    • Drupal.org - amycham
    • Natural Language Forms- nomonstersinme
    • Javascript in Drupal Theming - bradwade
    • Ajax jQuery Datepicker - decibel.places
    • dgo.to - elijah + special surprise guest
    • Sign up in comments below to give a lightning talk
  • Main Presentations
Have a topic that needs more then 5 minutes, we have slots of 20-30 minute talks. The basic idea is there are broader subjects or more detailed discussions this is the type of talk you would want to signup for, please mention 20 min talk when posting your talk description and the audience you expect to speak to. 20-30 min talks do not have to be related to this month's topic.

    • Kalabox Demo (Fast Local Development using Drush + Pantheon) - Kalamuna
    • Theming with Drupal Bootstrap - njmahesh
  • Break Out Sessions
Breakout sessions take place in the "other room" and are more informal, covering any number of topics.

    • New 2 Drupal BOF table - New to Drupal? Bring your questions and problems for expert help. If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.
    • NYC Camp 14 planning discussion - informal, ad hoc discussion about NYC Camp which is planned for April 2014.
    • Other ad hoc breakout BOFs - Have an interest? Start a BOF at a break out table

Signup Instructions!:
Use the signup button on this page to RSVP and watch this space for an update with any special instructions.

Drupal: Community Plumbing

seanr's picture

I'd like to sign up for a lighting round regarding the community surrounding Drupal, which I think is appropriate for the Drupal anniversary given it's original purpose as a community tool. I can speak to how it grew and why that community is so integral to the success of Drupal.

On the topic of community: I'm heading to Peru for DrupalPicchu the following week, so I'd love to record a short video of folks in NY waving or greeting the attendees in Peru that I could potentially integrate into my talk. Nothing fancy, just probably I phone :)

One of the trickier front-end requirements I have had lately, replacing the default popup datepicker with a custom inline datepicker, hiding the filter fields, and filtering via the calendar widget OR day/week/month tabs, while reflecting the range on the calendar widget and preserving the start and end dates through the AJAX refreshes (including a header slideshow) via cookies.

Northern NJ DUG - which traditionally follows NYC by a week - will be next week Wednesday 1/22 at NJIT in Newark. It's an easy trip from NYC by public transit (I take the 108 bus from Port Authority, which leaves on the hour and stops 2 blocks from the meetup - you can also take the PATH and a bus - or a 10 minute walk in one of the safer areas of Newark). More info here https://groups.drupal.org/new-jersey/nnj and http://www.meetup.com/NorthernNJDrupalGroup/ the date on meetup.com is wrong, we're from New Joisey! It's a smaller group, and we're always looking for presenters.

Lightning Talk - Panels theming?

nycguyjason's picture

Since today is supposed to be targeting Drupal Theming, I was wondering if someone is willing to do a quick talk on Theming with Panels (vs other options)?
That is of course IF there is still an open slot for a lightning talk AND someone is willing to volunteer for this late request.
Any takers? Thanks in advance.

Notes on last night

amycham's picture

A couple things from last night...

First, I didn't have slides, but I wrote a blog post a couple weeks ago that has everything I flew threw in my What's on Drupal.org talk, including links to handy pages: http://blinkreaction.com/blog/what-s-on-drupalorg

Second, Forest mentioned Ray's (rgs) "Drupal Manifesto." You can find that post here: http://blinkreaction.com/blog/my-birthday-gift-to-drupal

If you like it, don't forget to click through and sign on its dedicated page!

Finally, stay tuned for pics! :)

This was indeed one of the best Drupal Meetups! Every presentation and presenter was well-spoken and concise. Good to see so many community faces. Thanks to Forest for keeping the momentum of the meetup. Thanks to CPXinteractive for providing the space and the hospitality! And of course our sponsor of vittles, SDG!
