We are looking for presenters and a leader of the newbie group for the next meetup, Tuesday, August 28th from 7-9pm at 7 World Trade Center. There is time for at least 6 lightning presentations and hopefully a Ninja will volunteer to give a longer presentation about a significant Drupal project or feature. Please suggest your presentations in the comments or contact me directly.
Due to the growing number of participants we need to add a little more structure to the meetups. My general idea is as follows:
10mins - Intro (Cover Drupal news, upcoming events, job openings, intro of new members, etc.)
30mins - Lightening talks (~Six 5min presentations on anything and everything Drupal.)
40mins - Main talk (Presentation with Q&A)
40mins - Group discussion (Break into 2 groups Newbie Group & Advanced Dev/Design Group)
Afterwards, interested parties can head to one of the many dive bars in the neighborhood. Let me know what you think of the general plan. I will post the actual event announcement next week.

Comments
The general plan sounds good to me.
Looking forward to it!

Checking on it
Cool. I'll see if we can do it. I believe that the Fast Company space and the bridge of the Enterprise have many of the same capabilities, so it should be possible.
Fellow Drupalers, don't be shy! Your talk can be as simple as "what I did with Drupal this month" or "what I'm planning to do with Drupal in the future." This is a perfect opportunity to pimp your projects/skills and get some good feedback from the community. Not to mention, mad public speaking skills.
FastCompany location
The meeting room is great, but it's large size also has a downside - people at both ends felt a bit isolated. Breaking up into two discussion groups also did not help. I'd like a more coherence approach, i.e. a beginner-level presentation on an interesting topic, and then a high-level presentation on another interesting topic like "v6 and migration strategies" :)
Agreed
I would love to see people presenting on these specific topics. I'm going to do a quick beginner level presentation on getting past the initial "oh my god" moment and onto doing cool stuff with Drupal. I'm sure that individuals with more expertise than myself will be able to cover geektastic topics like "v6 and migration strategies", "CCK Madness", "Theming Like a God", etc..
I think beginners will benefit from listening to topics that may be over their head, because it will introduce them to the language and concepts they will need to go farther. The ninjas will benefit from dealing with beginner issues and questions, because it will help them better understand the difficulties their clients are facing in grokking Drupal.
Address Clarification
The meeting will be in the Fast Company/Inc. headquarters located at 7 World Trade Center. I will post the event announcement early next week.
presentation
The Sony BMG group (Jerad, Dave & Michael) can present on a number of topics depending on who is interested in what. Here's a few topics we can discuss, you guys can decide what you want to hear :-)
Let us know so we can prepare something for you guys!

Theming
I've recently been brought into the fold of keeping non-variable php out of anything except template.php, so I'd love to present on that.
stream the meeting on the net somehow?
Is there any way to have this meeting streamed on the internet live? With this capability, people who cant physically attend can still listen/view in and even ask questions (via a form on a webpage somewhere).
If it cant be streamed live, can it at least be recorded so I can view it later?
possibly
I know drupaldojo.com has some technologies that do this and they have made them available to the drupal community at large, but am not sure on the details of using them or how to go about asking for it... anyone?
Offer to present a lightning talk at the next Drupal meetup
I am new to Drupal, but I have some experience and knowledge about web programming frameworks in other languages, such as Rails (Ruby) and Catalyst (Perl). I have been collaborating with Jacob Redding, a PHP/Drupal expert, to develop a Drupal app that allows Drupal to provide a user-configurable web interface for very large external databases. I am using this for my own work analyzing large genetics and genomics databases for biology research, but the methods and approach are applicable to any large external database system. This should be of general interest to anyone interested in using Drupal as a CMS for very large external data systems.
I could give a lightning talk (or longer talk) on either:
1) using Drupal as an interface to large external databases.
2) how I came to choose Drupal as a CMS and web framework, after working unsuccessfully with Ruby on Rails and Catalyst.
Interest
I would be interested in hearing you do a lightning talk on topic number one.
External databases
Sounds good as a topic to me, as I will be soon undertaking something similar soon.
An idea jacob and my self
An idea jacob and my self shared a while ago regarding new NYC meetup structure is to re-introduce (or just introduce) hackathons.
Not sure yet how it will be done but it could be broken down into at least 2 levels
* Beginners
* Advanced
Beginners will work with 1-2 tutors on any hands on project from theming to custom modules
Advanced will optionally break into further groups to work on any more advanced project. i recommend to start by working our way through drupal issue queue and look for interesting bugs and/or feature requests. after we get the hang of this activity we can introduce our own module ideas and work on them during the hackathons.
for those of you whom like the idea, i ask you to discuss this idea and take it further.

I'd start with Advanced
I think starting out this month or next month with an advanced workshop would be best. Like litwol said I think it best if the group took a random task from the bug reports, issue queue, etc. then fixed it and submitted a patch. The exercise would teach those involved how to use the issue queue effectively, how to review Drupal code (most likely including using tools like the devel module, eclipse, and/or other tools), how to hunt down bugs, rolling a patch and then submitting the patch for review.
Once the group logistics/procedures/etc. are figured out building a module would be awesome. Items could, and probably should, be suggested before hand and then a plan worked out.
In my opinion I think this would have to take a strong leader. The leader would need to pick the issue and develop a rough outline for how to squash the bug/issue/feature request and then create little tasks for individuals or groups of individuals to tackle. This idea is really no different than the "skill sharing" idea I proposed and implemented a while back (although I don't think it was terribly successful because i simply did not have enough time to prepare for the session; which goes back to the strong leader suggestion)
Maybe we should move this discussion out to its on topic?
Who would like to take on the first leadership? litwol?

Using Drupal with large external databases
Hi Jerad and Mehboob,
Thanks for showing your interest in this topic. I will plan to give a short Lightning Talk on this, If enough others are interested, too.
