Hi
I'm new to Drupal and this Community but i wanted to introduce myself.

Im a learning Drupal from the Beginning right now and have been chipping away at a few different training resources. Mostly the Lynda videos and a few books that i've seen members here suggest..

I've been toying with becoming a web designer for a few years. i mostly come from a front end background but i've been doing some CSS xhtml Javascript work in the last two years and i think i'm ready to tackle Drupal full on..

I seems that i'm at a point in my learning where some face to face time with someone more experienced with Drupal would be a real benefit.
I've been searching for classes and instruction in New york but i'm not finding much..

I was wondering if anyone could suggest an approach?

sincerely, thanks for your time.

Hey Michael, at first I would

Hey Michael, at first I would suggest you also familiarize with PHP, even if you don't plan to write custom modules, I don't see how not knowing PHP basics can work for you once you jump "full on". That said, here's the stuff I love in terms of training and resources:

Lullabot:
They have a great selection of videos in different aspects and levels of expertise of Drupal Development, from site building and administration to advanced theming and module writing.

They also have the book, Using Drupal, plublished via O'Reilly.

Also check out their iTunes Video Podcasts, for 10 minute looks at skills needed while coding, good module combination etc.

APress:
Pro Drupal Development Second Edition is a must have as well. This is a deep, technical look at Drupal and how things work. Super useful in my opinion.

hey, thanks rgracia! I've

hey, thanks rgracia!

I've checked out a few of the lullabot series, i wasnt sure if they were worth it or if that was a valid place to start, so thanks for your suggestion..

I was also thinking about taking an Intro to PHP class at brooklyn college, cause its cheap. i think you've just convinced me to go ahead and do it..

thanks again for your suggestions.

hopefully i'll be seeing you around the community as i get more proficient :)

Learning by doing

Michael,

Welcome to GDO-NYC and the Drupalverse in general.

I have been using Drupal since v 4, about 5 years, and I learn something new on every project (including 10 ways that contrib modules get buggy, but that's just part of the fun).

You can learn a lot by building yourself a personal web site/blog, and other goal-oriented projects. There is demand for ecommerce (with Ubercart or Magento) and especially for SMO integration with Twitter, Facebook, Gigya etc.

There is currently a shortage of PHP and Drupal developers in most major markets and once you are up to speed I would be happy to introduce you to some contacts for employment.

The Acquia web site has some good videos for beginner-to-intermediate developers, once you sift through their purely marketing webinars, although those are interesting too: http://acquia.com/resources/tv

During an Acquia webinar about Drupal 7, I asked if "'Article' was specifically chosen as the default content type to make Drupal more friendly for Joomla users?" Moderator Lynne Capozzi tried to brush it off as a "rhetorical" question, but Drupal creator and curator Dries Buytaert answered that much thought had been given to it and "Article" was chosen as the best option.

Another hint... IRC is your friend!!

there is a #drupal-support room and a #drupal-nyc room. I highly highly highly recommend you get yourself in there so when you are stuck you have some people to ask.

@Decible thank you for the
