I spoke with a lot of people lately who were interested in talking about this topic, so I would like to get a BoF going where we can all share our experiences with estimating project durations. It would be nice to hear from people who work with a company and those who are freelancers as well, to get a feel for what's common and what's not when getting a proposal together.

I'd be interested in this. I'd also be interested in discussing an experience with a project that I told the client was not estimable -- it was an open-ended repair job in which estimating the whole scope would have taken weeks. (The client accepted that tradeoff and I got the project, but they quickly started getting antsy about the scope and asking for estimates, and re-asserting the original premise was a continuing challenge.) Has anyone else had projects like this?
