Community discussions around Open Publish distribution.

OpenPublish is a packaged distribution of Drupal, that has been tailored to the needs of today's online publishers. OpenPublish is ideal for the implementation of a variety of media outlet's sites including: online magazines, newspapers, journals, trade publications, broadcast, wire service and membership publications. Built and supported on standard Drupal core (currently Drupal 6x), OpenPublish features support everything from basic news coverage needs to Web 2.0 trends, social publishing, semantic tagging and topic hubs. Each component bundled in the distribution is well supported, documented and modularly designed according to Drupal's architecture.

Some useful links:

Important note: in order to fix consistency issues and critical bugs, in a timely manner, OpenPublish had to patch some third-party modules included in it. It's not recommended to independently update those. More information at: http://groups.drupal.org/node/60313

OP 2.3 Features Updated?

What does the OP2.3 update (I recall a late October release date bandied about) include? The first D7 beta was just released and I wonder when D7 support will come to OP? Thanks.

Slideshow and Node Embed

I'm creating an OP slideshow. It works fine when I go to that node and view it. However, when I embed the slideshow in an article, strange things happen. At first, the slideshow looks completely broken. But then if I clear the cache, it works and looks perfectly, just like it should. The slideshow is where I put it embedded in the article and it looks great. BUT, that only happens once, and when I refresh the page, the slideshow is broken. At this point, the elements aren't getting all of the classes they should be. For instance, when it's working the ul tag has these classes:

I want to write some howto's for OP starters, but other OP users input required

I'm pretty new at working with OP and Drupal and I'm using it for about a month now.

I really like OP, but it has an awful lot of features and figuring out how to do something takes a lot of time. I frequently have issues with functionality, theming or layout and usually I can find a workaround and also frequently skip because I can't figure out the remaining 5%

how do I use "node in block" ?

I want to use the node in block-module but Iisn't visible. I checked the input formats, but it's not visible

In the context I assigned the node-in-block to the region I want it to display, but it doesn't show. It shows on the Node-in-Block config, but not on the page itself.
I like the feature, but how do I configure it, so it will show?

2.2-Installation and Translations

1) As I wanted to avoid problems with the OP2.2-Blog-Bug, I tried to install 2.2-Build285 with the new OpenPublish Features 6.x-1.x-dev (Nightly build).
But apparently there is a problem: when I create articles the teaser-and image-fields are missing. Any idea?

2) Is there any possibility to get the German OP-Features-Translations automatically? In the nightly-build I find only the French and Spanish translations.

update and translate

I'm beginning with OP so I have questions:

  1. I see now that Embedded Media Field 6.x-1.24 need to be Security update. I see here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/60313
that this module isn't on the list so can I do update this module the same like in fresh drupal installation ?

  2. Can I use translate from http://localize.drupal.org/translate/downloads?project=openpublish_core ? and other modules translation from their site - which they are used in OP ?

Best approach to increase page load in OP

This is nothing new but I am just curious is somebody could suggest how to make the default OP installation speed up. In my default installation all the pages take too long to load. I am just working in a local server so I am afraid what is going to happen when i will go live.

Any tips?

Thanks,

Leo

Apture toolbar not displaying correctly with Internet Explorer

Has anybody ran into any problems with the Apture toolbar displaying incorrectly at the top of web page? It seems to be working fine with Firefox, Safari, and Google Chrome. However, when using Internet Explorer the formatting breaks and it stays on top of content when scrolled all the way to the top of the page, thus blocking our Top Banner Ad in the header. It should automatically "hide" itself from view when users are at the top of the page.

Future of OpenPublish

OpenPublish's theme should be built on a very simple, plain CSS framework such as Blueprint. http://www.subtraction.com/2007/08/07/the-framewor If using a grid is good enough for The Onion and the New York Times then it's good enough for me.

Also, since Context and Admin Menu module are used it should be considered to integrate Context Layouts and use of the Context Inline Block Editor as demonstrated on OpenAtrium (second video http://openatrium.com/features).

OP needs a progressive install

I no longer have OP installed, except on one site.

It is practical to give up, because so many issues don't make it viable. In my situation, I have a large number of sites to maintain and OP site defeats purpose.

I would love to work with OP and through issues over time, but I would really need a backdoor.

By backdoor I mean the ability to drop back incrementally, but with module dependencies that cannot be done.

First I think OP should start as a "clean drupal" similar to Acquia Drupal.

Second, there should be a clearly defined upgrade path for adding to OP functions.

Taxonomy questions

I have some questions about taxonomy and its behaviour in OpenPublish 2.2.
1. I have taxonomy-terms that look like this: A-50. When indexed the '-' is removed and it is stored as a50 in the index. When adding the content the taxonomy-term isn't added to the node. Similar items such as A-375 are added as they should, so it probably has to do with length. I've changed the indexing in search to 2 (instead of the default 3), but that doesn't work. What can be the problem and how can I solve it?

Is OP Ready for Prime Time?

The title of this discussion is meant as an honest question, not a slam on the OpenPublish profile. I'm considering moving back to OP after spending time using another platform (its name starts with "W"). That platform is dead-easy to manage and has fine-tuned its updating and maintenance. I'm wondering what (if any) steps I can take to elicit the same ease-of-use (as opposed to ease of modification) with OP? I compare the difference between other online publishing platforms and OP to walking down a street and walking a tight-rope without a net.

title missing from blog node on OP homepage and blog page

I'm having a bit of a time trying to figure out how to restore the "title" of all the blogs on my site. I am not sure but I think this is something that happened when I updated.

All other node titles are fine on home page and their page listing views.

I'm obviously missing where this is happening, where it is controlled. For a while even the author field was missing but I managed to restore that, which was likely caused by my fooling around with it, but I don't know how.

Removing teaser field creates error

For a variety of reasons (mobile posting via blogapi, simplified workflow) I would like to remove the teaser field from my article nodes, and use the standard node teaser instead.

But when I remove this via Views, I get this instead of a teaser:

< class="views-field-"> < class="field-content">

I first ran into this problem on OP 2.0, and was told it was a bug. I just installed the new 2.2 version, and the bug is still there.

Updating OpenPublish Features module to remove "required" modules

We are running a 2.0 version of OpenPublish and are looking to do away with FeedAPI. The OP Defaults module lists this as a dependency in the .info file. Is it possible just to comment out this dependency so we can uninstall the FeedAPI module?
