TOPICS

  • Drupal 7 Overview - "If you blink, you'll miss it all" - Drupal Association Board Member, Cary Gordon (Cherry Hill Co.) will be reviewing Drupal 7 in a speedy 20 minutes. If you blink, you may miss it. Come see the need-to-know about Drupal 7 which is coming out soon.

  • Short Talk: Drupal 7 Themes (part 1) - "Get the rundown of what matters" - LA Drupal Manager, Chris Charlton will demo details of how themes in Drupal 7 are both different and similar to the way they are built in Drupal 6. One amazing new feature is the inclusion of the ever popular plain-white "Zen" Theme Framework built in and renamed "Stark" for Drupal 7. There are over 40 new theme layer features and changes. Come see what these changes are. Chris Charlton is the author of "Drupal: Creating and Editing Custom Themes" video course on Lynda.com, which can be viewed at http://tinyurl.com/theme-drupal (there are free video samples available to non-subscribers). This is now going to be a multi-part talk.
    Slides available: http://www.slideshare.net/ccharlton/changes-to-drupal-themes-in-version-...
    Video available: http://drupal-la.blip.tv/file/3533064 (part 1) & http://drupal-la.blip.tv/file/3533036 (part 2)

  • Lightning Talk: Using Workflow + Flag + Content Lock modules - Rain and Ashok (LADrupal.org Web Site Team Members) will show how they're using Workflow, Flags and Content Lock modules to make editing super easy. This combo is shown in a case-study of the new Cavotes.org site scheduled to go live early April.

  • Lightning Talk: Randomize site graphics with ImageCache Actions + Views modules - Mike Stewart (MediaDoneRight.com) & LA Drupal Co-Manager) will demo how he used Views and ImageCache Actions modules to create randomized imagery with effects on a fun kids school Drupal site. A must see!

  • Lightning Talk: Drupal Gardens demo - Christefano will give a short demo of Drupal Gardens, the hosted CMS option from Acquia that's to Drupal as WordPress.com is to WordPress - which is great since anyone can signup for a Drupal site and not have to host it themselves, but if the site grows then you can export the site and migrate to a bigger hosting plan or 3rd party vendor. Drupal Gardens is built on Drupal 7, which is due for release this year.

  • Getting ready for DrupalCon San Francisco (April 2010). Are you going to DrupalCon this April? Group discussion of what sessions look hot and which BoFs (community sessions) people should know about! We'll also introduce the LA Drupal members who are presenting, and get to hear some of them preview what they'll be discussing at the conference.

When? Tuesday, Feb. 23rd, 2010 (from 7:30pm - 9:30pm)

TOPICS

  • Drupal 7 Updates What's new with Drupal 7. What was just released in the Alpha-2 preview that came out this recently. Plus Q&A. If you are planning a new web site or application for 2010, you will want to hear what Drupal 7 brings.

  • Awesome, Rich Inline Images in Drupal 6. Presentation on image handling in Drupal 6 and how inline images have vastly improved since Fall, 2009. Building a site with the wrong rich-text and image editors isn't a good idea -- especially when the site is handed off to a client. Christefano from Exaltation of Larks will show how to combine half a dozen modules (half of which you probably use already) to implement a gorgeous, intuitive image handling solution for newbies, site editors and experienced admins alike. (NOTE: Drupal 6 is still a perfect choice to build web sites with for the next 18+ months.)

  • Recap the wonderful volunteer work this past weekend at SCALE 8x. LA Drupal members volunteered to staff the Drupal booth at the Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE) for the third year in a row. This year Drupal was the only CMS (content management system) at the expo, beating out all the other options both open-source and commercially supported.

  • Getting ready for DrupalCon San Francisco (April 2010). Are you going? Did you vote on your favorite session proposals? If you don't have a ride there yet, there is a Drupal party bus that is driving up from San Diego, through Los Angeles, up to San Francisco.

2009-12-15 19:30 - 22:00 America/Los_Angeles
Event type:
User group meeting

More details to come, but our venue sponsor Causecast.org has agreed to allow LA Drupal a night of celebrating. Every monthly meeting is a celebration of Drupal, but for December we will be celebrating our local community - so if you would like to help sponsor drinks, raffle prizes, and/or food then please contact the LA Drupal organizers for full details.

For this end of the year meeting we will not have any formal presentations, but instead only 5-minute Lightning Talks: come show off your latest favorite module, show off your latest Drupal work, show off a site you cannot live without that runs on Drupal. People who finish on time get an extra raffle ticket for Drupal related prizes.

We do not plan to have formal setting available as the entire night will be filled with music, networking, and our random 5-minute Drupal Lightning Talks, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Invite your co-workers. Many regional Drupal groups are invited so expect a good crowd.

When? Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 - 7:30PM-10PM
