Only about 1.5% of the people involved in open source are women, leaving us terribly underrepresented. In the Drupal world, we're up to a whopping 7% 10% 17%, which only gets us to awfully unrepresented. ;) This group is for anyone (male, female, or otherwise) who believes that we can do better and wants to help.
So if you:
- are a woman who needs some help/guidance in order to get (more) involved with Drupal and the Drupal community
- are a woman who wants to network and get to know other women involved in Drupal
- are anyone who has ideas on things we can do to help encourage women to participate in Drupal
...then this is the group for you. :)
Anyone have an idea how would be the best way for diff. roles to edit, update their info?
Never have success asking for help on normal forum or IRC so will try to ask for help here where a lot of other girls are. :-)
Anyone have an idea how would be the best way for diff. roles to edit, update their info? On this http://www.tinemuller.dk/test_drupal/ in the top click browse/CRUD - everybody can click a toilet and see all about it but only people with roles for each city can change the info but there are 98 cities so NO good to be in the top - How is the CLEVER way to do such things, please?

Just a hi from Sweden
I just read that you don't have to be woman to be a part of this group, so I thought I should take the opportunity.
Don't have much to say (right now), other than if one more member in this group can make a tiny bit more momentum for getting more awesome people feel welcome in the Drupal world I want to be a member.
Cheers!

Drupalcon Drupalchix Statistics
smoothstr's post on making Drupalcon more inviting to women prompted me to go back through old Drupalcon schedules and attempt to compile some data and statistics. This is a wiki page, so please feel free to add to and expand this.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find schedules online for any Drupalcons prior to Barcelona (2007). But here are some stats I was able to scrounge up in terms of women presenters, approximate attendance levels of Drupalchix BoFs, etc. Note that these purposely don't include stats from BoF sessions, since those are both a) inconsistently captured across the years (Szeged did an amazing job, but we haven't quite matched it since), and b) typically aren't in the schedule / program ahead of time, thus aren't influencing anyone's decision to come to Drupalcon.
Here's the abbreviated version:
| Conference | Number of women (co)presenters | Number of sessions with women (co)presenters | Drupalchix BoF attendance (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drupalcon Barcelona (September 2007) | 2 out of 61 (~3%) | 4 out of 90 (~4%) | 12-15 |
| Drupalcon Boston (March 2008) | 12 out of 108 (~11%) | 17 out of 73 (~23%) | 20-25 |
| Drupalcon Szeged (August 2008) | 9 out of 84 (~10%) | 14 out of 68 (~20%) | 25-30 |
| Drupalcon DC (March 2009) | 14 out of 121 (~11%) | 22 out of 109 (~20%) | 50 |
| Drupalcon Paris (Sept 2009) | 9 out of 71 (~12%) | 11 out of 84 (~13%) | 30-40 |
| Drupalcon San Francisco (April 2010) | 41 out of 179 (~23%) | 42 out of 133 (~31%) | 100+ |
| Drupalcon Copenhagen (August 2010) | 14 out of 122 (~11%) | 13 out of 107 (~12%) | 15-20 |
| Drupalcon Chicago (March 2011) | 32 out of 146 (~22%) | 30 out of 102 (~29%) | |
| Drupalcon London (August 2011) | 12 out of 107 (~11%) | 15 out of 90 (~17%) | 15-20 |
So basically, other than an outlier with Drupalcon Barcelona where the numbers were very low (which is coincidentally where the first Drupalchix BoF was held), and an outlier with Durpalcon San Francisco where the numbers were very high, we tend to hover around 10% of total speakers and 15-20% of total sessions with women presenters.
Read moreDown with the barriers (to participation in Drupalcon)
Edit: changed the title from "Drupalcon for women" because while this conversation started about ways to remove barriers for women, it's not specific to women. It's for anybody who may feel excluded because of sex, race, religion, sexuality, age, skin color, health, experience, or whatever.
Are there specific things you'd like us to do at Drupalcon or before Drupalcon to address the needs of women who are thinking about coming to Drupalcon, or planning to come to Drupalcon?
Things I can imagine:
- Ensure that there's more than just a Drupalchix BOF. Maybe a talk?

DrupalCon Copenhagen
Hi :-)
I wonder if some of You (Awfully Underrepresented) are going to go to Copenhagen...?
Considering global underrepresentation, I'm Under++, as a woman from (eastern) Europe, especially Poland (misogynous catholic country, where you can be a Queen of Hearth and Home, but not an engineer). Well... I hope that this conference could change my deep and permanent feeling of alienation... that's why I'm going...

Read morewhat strategies / tactics would you suggest to attract women to software development, web design, and Comp Sci in general?
I've started looking into the issue of why there aren't many women in working in the Sciences and Engineering. I'm particularly interested in attracting women to Computer Science, software development, and web development. I think women could and would add a lot to improve whatever field they chose - whether they wanted to be Database Administrator, Drupal Hacker, SysAdmin, etc. I think they approach problems differently, and they would help create better solutions.

I am looking to establish relationships with other Drupal developers and themers who are interested in eco-friendly, green, progressive, sustainable, or social justice projects.

Through my company http://www.10kwebdesign.com we do a lot of work with green businesses, membership groups, and multicultural women entrepreneurs, and I'd like to collaborate and grow with other people who are committed to working in this sphere.
My sense is that there is a very deep need for good developers to offer their skills and talents to the green and clean economy.
