Drupal for Good

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This group is a place to share ideas, organize and generally put our heads together regarding how Drupal is, and can be, used for nonprofit, charitable and social justice purposes.

Join us on the third Thursday of every month, at 1:00 PM U.S. Eastern for our group meeting by phone. View our next discussion date.

All calls are free and everyone is welcome! While "#npdrupal" refers to "nonprofit Drupal" (similar to "#nptech") our focus is broader than just nonprofit/NGO-specific uses of Drupal and encompasses all "Drupal for good" work like advocacy, community organizing, fundraising, and campaigns.

Our meetings take place at 1:00 PM US-Eastern/10:00 AM US-Pacific/19:00 CEST. (Convert to your local time zone.)

USSF coming to Atlanta- local representatives for the tech team?

Hi all, I'm decidedly not in Atlanta, but I'll be coming to Atlanta for the United States Social Forum– a regional edition of the World Social Forum just held in Nairobi, Kenya, and that started in Porto Alegre, Brazil, as a counterweight to the elite invite-only World Economic Forum.

The USSF site is being developed in Drupal by volunteers around the country, especially NYC (I'm in Boston but haven't helped much).

DrupalCampNYC 2

Start:
2007-01-20 10:00 - 2007-01-21 18:00 Etc/GMT

To my dear New York City, Drupalistas and soon to be Druaplistas,

We are two weeks away from DrupalCamp NYC 2, 20 & 21 Jan. A few of us have been thinking what if we concentrated our efforts on a single project instead of working solely on individual projects? I'm not talking about a classroom setting, but a project (ie install profile, module stuff and theme) to educate each other?

Well here is your opportunity to change the future of one lucky group. Big or small, non-profit or community organization... If you know of a project that can use the assistance of a Drupal site, we need you to nominate them. The lucky organization will also get one year of CivicSpace on Demand (hosted and managed install of Drupal 4.7 and CiviCRM + EMAIL)!

More Good in 'O7

First off, thanks to everyone for your posts and involvement in 2006. More importantly, thanks for the work you do using Drupal for worthy causes in your community and throughout the world. Our group has been a bit quiet though in informing others about how Drupal is being put to use for GOOD. Let's all make a resolution in '07 to continue using Drupal for good, and to keep fellow Druaplers informed of what is being done.

I know that large organizations and major mobilizations like the World Food Programs http://fighthunger.org, UN Millennium Campaign's http://standagainstpoverty.org and the One campaign's http://one.org are using Drupal. Great Drupl shops like Development Seed use Drupal to support everything from the World Bank to a small project for returning Peace Corps volunteers. However, you probably haven't read much about any of these projects in this group. Sharing how Drupal is being used for good is important in encouraging and growing the Drupal world, but also in displaying it to outsiders. A vibrant Drupal of Good group can be vital in encouraging more grants from Google or organizations wishing to support open source development for charitable ends. (note: I'm just as guilty as anyone when it comes to not posting about my work)

looking for help creating a drupal site for NYC's teachers....

Sorry, drupalistas, but this is a goodwill project for NYC teachers. Coquille, my good friend/teacher/activist wants to create a really really simple site to teach other NYC teachers how to recycle. By law the schools are to recycle, but the school system refused to educated nor provide supplies for recycleing. So enter my friend, armed with a dozen or fellow teachers to do data input and create content. They need something simple that will be functional and hopefully get a bit of press (IE... free advertisement for you.)

I'm just the connector here... So please be nice. ;)

Noel

I'm looking to create a website to encourage recycling in NYC schools. I'd like the site to start with teacher and student-generated content created by our school, with the idea that our resources/recycling system could be easily replicated in other schools. Eventually, other schools could join in authoring content. Currently, few schools are recycling in NYC, which is totally frustrating because it's the law and, more importantly, the right thing to do.

Announcement: Developing an Online Technology for the Permaculture Community

I am co-coordinating a team to update the feature-set available through the permaculture.org.uk website.
The site is owned and run by the Permaculture Association Britain, a charity working with sustainability issues like climate change, energy descent (peak oil) and solutions to them.
We intend to increase the scope of the site: to include much more user content and create an on-line community as well as to increase the number of features available to users.

We are setting up a team to collaborate and evaluate the options open to us.
This team will include the Permaculture Association, Leeds office, our web developer, members of the permaculture community and software developers. With this in mind we have setup a site for use as a place to collaborate and to test online technologies. That said we have really only quite limited resources currently available for this project.

OG2List reverse bounty - email attachments, attachment virus checking, multisite config - OPEN

My name is Mack Hardy, I am the technology manager for a non-profit called Post Carbon Institute.

Post Carbon Institute is running OG for its Relocalization Network (http://www.relocalize.net/grouplist). We all need communication tools to organize, only when we are organized can we be effective. We want to enhance og2list so that our users can choose to use email as the primary interface to other people in their groups. OG2List is promsing, but has a couple outstanding features which we are going to fund further development of.

The scope of the next stint of work will be:

Check out RootsCamp NYC, 18 Nov....

Hey'a NYC Drupalers! I know many of you have helped out in campaigns or know a thing or two about the new media we're dealing in. So why not check out RootsCamp NYC!

So many people at all levels are discovering amazing innovations in organizing, using technology to make a difference, and adapting to newmedia habits. It doesn't make sense for a post-election debrief to exclude the local union activists, precinct captains, heads of a local parties, or other activists who are kicking ass in a bold new way. That's why we want you to attend Rootscamp NYC on Saturday, 18 November 2006.

I know it's a little odd advertising an event that needs a venue, but RootsCamp NYC needs some 'roots lovin. We need 4 - 5 rooms that can host 25 - 30 people. If you know of anyone in the city who has access to a location that's close to public transportation (Union Hall, University, Office Space, etc.), please forward this message with a personalized note and asking them to call me.

Podcasting

So, I have been doing my monthly round up of really cool sites, and have been coming across a number of candidate Web sites using podcasting and / or multimedia solutions.

While I am not ready to tack any modules onto Drupal.org, I wanted to write about some low cost ways podcasting and multimedia can be added to a campaign budget. As I see it, the main benefit of adding audio and video in a campaign context is it is a direct appeal from a candidate to potential voters and donors and really gives people a chance to present themselves in the best light. Every campaign I know of has video of speeches and debates that probably should be shown in some context, and there are a number of really cheap ways to pull all this information into a site without a lot of effort.

Drupal STANDS UP Against Poverty

STAND UP Against Poverty was launched by the UN Millennium Campaign to mobilize people around the world to STAND UP Against Poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals. Six years ago, 189 world leaders sat down and agreed to eradicate extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. On October 15&16, people across the world will STAND UP to remind them of this promise and set a Guiness World Record for the most people to STAND UP for a cause.  Events range from a large concert in Rome, to STAND UP moments during Spanish football matches such as the FC Barcelona game, to impoverished women in Tanzania coming together.

Using Drupal to promote NYC legistation

Only local images are allowed. Last month, the NYPD attempted to change the rules on sidewalk usage and the right to freely assemble.

http://assembleforrightsnyc.blogspot.com/2006/08/response-to-nypd-withdr...

Through a successful grassroots campaign, we were able to convince the NYPD to rescind their rule's change, but the fight is not over! This month, we will be launching a campaign petitioning the city council to adopt legislation protecting our right to freely assemble and speak freely.

I am wondering if you are interested in helping us. We need a network of designers, programmers, and bloggers to promote our message and run our website. Starting small we need a designer to create graphics, an admin to run our Drupal site, and a network admin or programmer to help us institute a broadcast SMS system. On Wed - 13 September, we will be launching a basic site to promote our draft legislation. Once our campaign is launched we need bloggers to promote our message.

If you are interested please email Noel Hidalgo at noel(a/t)nonecknoel.com.

UN Millennium Campaign to Use Drupal

The United Nations Millennium Campaign, a global campaign to end extreme poverty by 2015, will relaunch their website on Drupal in the coming weeks and months. The campaign chose Drupal based on the software's flexibility, scalability, active user community, and proven track-record in managing large sites among other reasons. The Millennium Campaign will use the new platform to give greater content control to partner organizations and encourage online participation and contributions by individuals interested in holding their governments to account on implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. The United Nations Development Programme, which manages the Millennium Campaign, joins other UN Departments like the World Food Program in adopting the Drupal platform as a strategic campaign tool promoting activism.

Drupal key to our non-profit progress

Hi Everyone

Keeping this short is tough (and off to a bad start ;) - at home (South Africa) there is huge social disparity which is perpetuated by only the well-off having access to resources that could potentially break the cycle. We are focused on education. Many students in poorer schools (>50%) do not even have sufficient textbooks. Enter our project - a note: without publishers', editors' and authors' royalties a hard cover 250 page books costs less than ZAR20 (<$2.5) to print:

A Note on Subscriptions

Some of you may have already subscribed to this group and now realised your subscription is missing. The Drupal Groups admin accidentally deleted this group and all data was lost. Luckily only a poll was posted at that point. Make sure to check your "my groups" block to see if you are subscribed.

Greenpeace and Drupal for Good.

Hello,

A quick note to the Greenpeace support group members: some of you might be interested in the new Drupal for Good group just started by Jason.

If Greenpeace ends up adopting Drupal, someone might want to list their site here. You can do the same for your sites that are, one way or another, working to create a better tomorrow for ourselves and our planet.

Blessings to all.

How to cooperate?

After having introduced yourself and your site, you can share your ideas here or do some brainstorming about ways we can use our sites to cooperate in order to collectively have a greater positive impact on our world.

Since I am the first one to post in this group, and I don't know yet what other sites there are and what topic they cover, I don't have any specific ideas on this topic.

Generally, though, here are a few thoughts:
1) Since it is a Drupal specific group, which Drupal modules/tools can we specifically use to work together?
2) we can have a block with the rss feed of other Drupal for Good sites, especially those working in the same field.
