update on progress with Drupalcamp NYC 10 Planning

joebachana's picture

Hi All,

Just a quick update on where things stand with venue. I'll number them for everyone's orderly delectation:

  1. The active organizers for DCNYC10 agreed to visit Universities in Manhattan. Based on price, convenience, and readiness of facilities (size, Internet, common eating areas, etc), the group agreed that Hunter College was going to be the best bang for our buck. The research was done over about 8 universities in Manhattan. I am still checking one more (Fordham Law) just to see what they have to offer.

  2. We initially discussed August 20th as the date for the next Drupalcamp. However, with summer vacations, it just didn't seem practical that we'd do an amazing job. Since we're looking at a larger camp targeting 450-500 Drupalistas and their entourages, the costs will be higher for this one so we want to make sure it is planned with panache and great care. Thus, the group agreed to a November/early December time frame.

  3. We have alerted Hunter to the change in date and they have let us know we can probably get a Sunday in November/December, but we have to wait a few weeks until they finalize classroom schedules. As a backup, we are going to a few of the other colleges just in case Hunter doesn't have availability for an inexplicable reason (they seemed VERY excited to host us, so I don't see this as an issue).

  4. I am going on vacation next week, so I'm not going to be doing anything short of MAYBE trying to resuscitate my moribund blog (getting tired of being harangued about that, but really, does the world need more content?). Thus, nothing is going to happen on finalizing the venue for at least a week. When I get back the week of July 11th, I'll ping Hunter, NYU Law, Fordham, and maybe one or two of the other ones and get some dates. Again, Hunter was the least expensive by far and with great facilities, so that seemed to be the group's top choice.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to put them out there.

My $.02 on

banghouse's picture

My $.02 on timeframe:

Pre-Thanksgiving November seems like a reasonable timeframe for the event. One could expect that most people will have more free time between Halloween and Thanksgiving than they will between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Just about any dates will work for me but its probably safe to assume that most people are going to have to consider the holiday season and its resulting obligations when making plans.

Nov. 19/20 is Drupalcamp Austin

Drupalcamp Austin is regularly in November.

This year it's the weekend of Nov. 19th / 20th.

I'll just leave this here

Just as a point of reference here are the dates of the first 9 New York Drupalcamps:

1 - May 13, 2006
2 - Jan 20-21, 2007
3 - July 14-15, 2007
4 - March 29-30, 2008
5 - Sept 13-14, 2008
6 - Feb 28, 2009
7 - Dec 5, 2009
8 - July 24, 2010
9 - Mar 9, 2011

I would think Austin would be a minor concern

Unless it was near SXSW. ;0)

I'd think if we are going to coordinate with other camps it just be in the Northeast region.

That being said the Austin Drupal community is great , I enjoyed their meetup during SXSW. I'd go if I was in Texas in November.

If you still need volunteers, I am interested.

re: Drupalcamp 10 Meetup?

joebachana's picture

Who is up for a meetup next Thursday evening July 21st at 7 pm? Agenda items would include:

  1. Update on location and date options
  2. Planning work on template/guide book materials
  3. organizing ourselves into roles for camp planning (food coordinator, sponsor coordinator, signage, etc...)

I'll provide a few cases of beer if other people bring some pretzels or other savories. Location would be:

@DPCI
1560 Broadway (entrance on 46th Street)
Suite 810
NYC 10036

Number there is 212.575.5609 if you lose your way.

Please +1 if you plan on attending. You can also join the list that we've set up which may be found at drupalcampnyc@lists.mayfirst.org. (@forestmars, should I create a new event for next week's meetup, use this one and update it, or just leave this comment here and pray that the interested parties will come?)

Also, probably worth just creating a new event, that saves everyone getting a bunch of +1 email notifications
