piwik vs. google analytics?

I noticed many/most of you (us?) seem to use Google Analytics. Have any of you been using Piwik and have any insight into how/why you made that choice? Aside from the local vs. cloudsource nature, any salient feature differences that swayed your decision?

Thanks,

Intriguing. Certainly worth a look at.

I've dealt with various statistics & reporting tools before (as well as written my own) and the first thing that jumps out at me as to why not do it in-house is the sheer amount of resources you need to keep your data aggregated and up-to-date when you're dealing with large traffic sites. For a small to medium traffic sized website a solution like this may be entirely applicable.

Another flip of the coin in favor of Google analytics is the overall Google services integration, such as AdWords. Although i don't know piwik well enough, perhaps it offers some kind of integration as well?

Why Piwik

I plan to start deploying it to all my sites. Simple reason. Why give Google all that free data?
If you use Adwords they will know what works and start charging you more for CTR.
I have seen it happen.

Wrong answer for most non-profits

We get about $10K worth of free Google Adwords via grants that are relatively easy for non-profits to get. This has boosted our hits dramatically.

applying for Google AdWords non-profit grants

Hi yktdan,

May I ask how one would apply for these grants? We work with a few non-profits who I'm sure would be eager to know more about this process.

Non-Profits

Non-profits do not spend money, they spend grant money.
Big differance.
Google Grants are great but they are very selective and your charity has to be non-controversial.

Simple, good privacy options

I really like the advanced segmentation in GA.
Users have to have a Google ID for access. Not a big deal, I know.. but something.

For a small organization (everyone I tend to work with..) the people who are going to be reviewing this info will prefer (and comprehend!) the Piwik UI.
Piwik also has a few nice privacy features that are very up-front, like the ability to easily enable an opt-out button, and an option to discard IP digits.

I don't have multiple domains set up on GA, so I don't know how the ACL works, but in Piwik it's really easy to grant/revoke access to users across various domains/properties in a single interface.

Nice post
