Just trying to see if anyone would be interested in a 2-day evening theming seminar held in Elizabeth, NJ sometime in January of next year. Please let me know ASAP, so I can make the proper arrangements. For those who are not familiar with NJ, Elizabeth is about 10 minutes away from Newark International Airport. Hope to hear from a lot of you soon. Thanks.

I would definitely be interested in this! Please keep us posted as the details solidify.

Thanks!

What's the format?

sounds great. What's the format though? is it a free meetup/barcamp sort of thing? If so I'm happy to help out with teaching if it's after the 7th of January.

The last time I saw this particular person do something like this, it was very much done in a classroom style. He stood up front with a multimedia projector displaying his computer screen. As for the fee, my initial thought is that it'll probably be about $25/person to cover expenses. Is that too much? As details become available, I'll definitely let people know.

If location's one of the

If location's one of the expenses you should ask around. there's a bunch of people in the NYC Drupal group who could find a space that could be used for free. If there were less than 20 people attending I could probably get the conference room at Green Map in the East Village of NYC for this.

My church is willing to let us use a portion of the church for free. Most of the expenses will probably come from things such as snacks and travel costs for the person leading the seminar.

Great idea I definitely will

I'm good to go

Excellent idea.

Depending on the level of the participants, you could set the level of the course accordingly. Maybe you could send a brief email to registered people as to what they expect to learn/cover during these evenings.. My 2 cents.

I could host this in office

litwol's picture

I could host this in office of mansueto ventures in world trade center 7, same place where we have monthly meetups. space can accomodate large groups of people and its place everyone familiar with and we have huge projector with suround sound support ;)

That would be great. I guess we just need to settle on a date for the event.

I would like to attend

Theming sounds like a good topic. I'm a newbie and will totally benefit from a session like this.

Mansueto sounds great, and I'd be happy to help plan. Who's the theming expert you had in mind?

i'm in too!

johnvsc's picture

as always, i would love to participate! ... esp for designers...

wherever too... mansueto ventures is good and easy to get to for new yorkers as well as jersey-ites

Definitely interested!

I'd lean towards an NYC-based activity, would make it much easier to attend, especially if it's more than one day.

Beginner or Advanced?

kwang0274's picture

The guy who will be leading this seminar is curious as to the theming level of the people interested in going. I suggested having a beginner's theming seminar the first night and maybe something more advance the second night. He defines advanced theming as such, "Advanced theming to me would be theming module output (either within module supplied tpl files or by grabbing a theme function and using it in your template.php), theming views, using node-custom.tpl.php files...and that's about it." Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

I'm interested!

Also a newbie. NYC would be easier than NJ for me too. Thanks!

I spoke to our office

litwol's picture

I spoke to our office manager and this is the information that i've found:
1) air conditioner will be turned off during the weekend. having air conditioner on is very expensive (200$ per hour at 4 hours minimum). it is not very sanitary to be here for 2 days in a row with no AC on and i dont think we can afford to pay for AC being on 2 days for 4 hours each. so my proposition towards that is to have one meeting on friday evening and one on saturday afternoon. that way air will still be fresh (due to AC working the whole day on friday) and we will not need to pay anything toward it.

2) security concerns: i personally will need to escort people in and out when they come into the building. i am perfectly fine with that responsibility as long as everyone goes out and goes in together (for example to go to lunch or something).

3) i will need a list of attendees well in advance (1 full day at least), anyone not on this list will absolutely not be able to come to this seminar.

These are the only concerns that office manager has. she will provide us with bathroom passes and general access to the large conference room with projector.
Also i can secure us recording equipment if we want to digitize these seminars (i am for it).

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

P.S. we need to agree on a date when to do this. lets plan at least 2 weeks in advance.
