Where To Park
The "Getting There" page on the Drupal Camp NYC 10 website (http://drupalcampnyc.org/about/getting-there) only offers options by subway and bus. For those of us driving down from Boston, that's not a lot of help. We plan to drive in on Friday 12/9/2011, stay over Friday and Saturday nights, and drive back on Sunday 12/11/2011. That means we need to find a hotel room for Friday and Saturday nights.
Of the 10 hotels listed at http://drupalcampnyc.org/about/venue, eight of them have no rooms available for those nights. The cheapest rooms at the other two range from $1,130 to $1,290 for a two night stay! So, staying in Manhattan is out of the question.
Instead, I found an affordable hotel room around White Plains. But that means we'll have to drive in to John Jay College from White Plains on Saturday morning and park our car somewhere. Also, I presume conference attendees will be socializing for much of Saturday night after the conference, and we'll want to stick around for that.
So, do any of you who are local to NYC know of a parking lot or garage near John Jay College where we can park the whole day and pick the car up late at night, possibly midnight or 1:00 AM if we need to?
What are typical rates to park for an entire Saturday in that part of Manhattan?
Also Hostels in NYC
There are also a few Hostels in NYC. Since I live in NYC I haven't stayed at the NYC location, but I have been to one of the HI locations in another city. While not fancy it was clean, safe, and had wi-fi.

If you are staying outside of
If you are staying outside of the city I'd recommend just taking a train in for the conference. Driving will be a pain, and parking will be expensive or hard to find. The Metro North line runs to white plains and also run all night long.
Most of us locals don't even have cars :)

Hotels - Local
You can stay in Long Island City for a much lower rate. It is a short ride by Subway into John Jay.
I will post a list Monday,
Thanks. A few related
Thanks. A few related questions:
Here in Boston the subways close at 1:00 AM. Are they open all night in NYC?
How safe is the subway line that runs to L.I.C.? How safe is it walking back to a hotel in L.I.C. late at night?
Are hotels in L.I.C. likely to include parking?
LIC
Yes most hotels have free parking.
Subways are very safe and run 24/7. Trip will take about 30 minutes max.
I will find out if any of the lines are rerouted for the weekend.
hotels
I know this is late, but you could have taken Megabus for 50 cents each way if you book early enough.
I'd also suggest just finding a random hotel elsewhere in the city using priceline, hotwire, or hotels.com.
You can also look into staying in Jersey somewhere near a Path Train. It connects to the NYC subway pretty easily.
Parking at a garage in Manhattan everyday would add up.
Thanks, but we still need info on the parking situation
We'll only need to park in Manhattan for the one day of the conference. So even if it costs $50-$75, it's worth it to stay outside the city and have to drive in on the day of the conference. We just need some confirmation that the rate for a single day isn't in the $200/day range, and that we'll be able to find a lot that doesn't close early and lock the car in.
Thanks for letting me know about Megabus, but it's really not a viable option for this trip. It would add several hours to the trip each way vs. driving directly from the house, and it would more than triple the cost of travel.
I do plan on checking hotels.com a few days before the conference, and if I can find a room close to the conference at a last-minute reasonable price, then we'll do that instead. But for now I really need to know about the parking situation.
Parking
Be sure to use BestParking.com - you pick your garage, print out the discount offer (one page) and hand it to the attendant at payment time to receive your discount. Only possible down side is that payment must be made by credit card.
re: Parking + hotels
++phunster for the bestparking.com suggestion. Will add it to the conference website.
Also, I added a few links to the hotel listings page on the site: http://www.drupalcampnyc.org/about/venue

Drupal Camp NYC 10
I registered but don't know what time it starts or what room or building. Website states 899 Tenth Avenue Manhattan.
A few more details would be great because I can't seem to find them on the site and we are driving in from NJ and don't know a lot about that area.
Thanks Much, Paul t.

DCNYC10 start time et.al.
Hi Paul,
We'll start at 9am but will open doors by 8am for registration. We'll have breakfast available (bagels, cream cheese, butter, coffee, juice).
This page should help you get to the camp site that morning: http://www.drupalcampnyc.org/about/getting-there
If you're coming from NJ, you can take either the GWB or the Lincoln Tunnel, then go on the west side highway to 57th street. There are a few parking garages right there between 12th and 11th that you can choose from. I use GMC Parking mid block (will say "PARK" in big letters). Then, its just a couple of short blocks to John Jay College. See the page I posted the link to above.
See you on December 10th! -Joe

another option
You can take the Metro-North commuter train in from White Plains (and lots of other places, and probably there are buses too) and leave your car there. Weekdays parking at commuter rail lots can be scarce but early on a Sunday it shouldn't be a problem. The commuter trains run until midnight or 1am, but not all night.
