Drupal Gardens: Drupal 7 SaaS - BOF

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Drupal Gardens is Acquia's Drupal 7 SaaS product.

Hosted and maintained Drupal - similar to Wordpress.com

It is promising, but is it ready for commercial use? There are already 10K+ DG sites!

Limitations such as no Calendar/Event modules are restricting its use, but it will surely grow in its capabilities in time.

Share your experiences - I am creating a community site for a school with DG, importing a static site with a custom theme and menu system. The client loves the idea of free hosting and maintenance! [note: the free service is limited in the amount of pages and data transfer, but there are other tiered commercial plans available]

There is no "official" session for Drupal Gardens - so let's flock together!

The Rewards of Volunteering

[oops this is not meant as a comment, it is a separate BOF proposal - but I lost where to post it, maybe the BOF thread is closed]

Volunteering has many rewards -

As the volunteer web developer/webmaster for Faith the Dog I have fun helping spread the word and every day I get incredibly moving feedback from visitors to the web site

But how do we avoid the pitfalls:

  • Exploitation
  • Lack of guidance from "clients"
  • Obsession with unpaid "work" overruling gainful work

etc?

  • What are the aspects of the Drupal framework that encourage or complicate volunteering?
  • Will Drupal Gardens encourage us to create sites we can "hand off"?

I'll be at that BoF

I'll try to show up - did you pick a time?

There are a ton of great sessions - seems like 4:50 Sunday is just for BoFs though, I'm guessing that will be packed with BoFs.
