Design for Drupal comes to LA! The first annual Drupal Design Camp LA conference is officially scheduled for February 5-6, 2011, in Los Angeles, California.
Registration for Drupal Design Camp LA is done at http://2011.ddcla.org and you're welcome to sign up. Registering for the conference is as simple as signing up for an account. We'll be launching the full site soon with information about the venue, local hotels, restaurants and coffeeshops, and begin accepting session proposals.
The Drupal Design Camp LA conference follows in the footsteps of the Drupal Design Camps at Standford, in Boston and in Prague, which have successfully brought designers, themers, developers, information architects and usability engineers together. These conferences are just like DrupalCamps but offer sessions and presentations specifically about design and theming topics such as grid design, usability testing, sustainable, additive approaches to theming and so on.
What's Design for Drupal?
Translating a design into a Drupal "theme" is often a high barrier and it has been difficult and costly for many designers to have a "design-driven approach" to Drupal. Feedback from the design community has often focused on the difficulties of designing for the Drupal theme system, which combines several programming disciplines and languages, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP.
Design for Drupal is a relatively new movement in the Drupal community to help make Drupal more friendly and approachable to designers, information architects and usability engineers, and in general anyone who is interested in customizing Drupal's output to the web page. At its core, Design for Drupal is about inviting the larger design community together to be a part of the Drupal community and enabling designers, usability engineers, developers, information architects and themers to coordinate efforts, come up with creative ideas and work towards making Drupal easier to use and look beautiful.
Location
Drupal Design Camp LA 2011 is being hosted by the Spring Arts Tower in Downtown Los Angeles. The same venue where the Drupal Everywhere: Making Mobile Websites with Drupal event was held in November, 2010, the Spring Arts Tower is an office building for more than a hundred creative companies and independent artists, designers, architects, photographers, painters, production companies and ad agencies.
It is located at 453 S. Spring St., Los Angeles, CA 90013, and is easily accessible by public transportation and there is affordable all-day public parking in several nearby parking lots.
Formerly the Los Angeles headquarters of the Citizens National Bank and then the Crocker Bank, the Spring Arts Tower is a Nationally Registered Historic Building and features original Art Deco designs, art nouveau details, sculptured brass, acres of fine Italian marble, Batcheldor tile, California alder and tiger oak. There are ten vaults located on four floors. It is a host to LA Fashion Week and the Downtown Art Walk, and is a frequent filming location for countless television shows including 24, Numb3rs and Heroes, and movies such as Rush Hour, Meet the Fockers and Spiderman 3.
Sponsors and individual contributors
With help from our generous sponsors and help from individual contributors, we are working on making Drupal Design Camp LA a free event. This conference is, however, organized entirely by volunteers and there are costs involved in running the conference, from paying for our venue and organizing food to printing schedules and providing services to the deaf and hearing-impaired members of our community.
Please contact the LA Drupal managers if you'd like to discuss sponsorship opportunities. Sponsorships are immensely appreciated and all contributions go directly towards funding conference operation costs. Any funds not used for the camp will donated to the the LA Drupal Association for other events and infrastructure, promotion and distribution needs. Thank you!

There are a lot of places to stay that are near the venue. The upcoming design camp website will have all that information, including a forum where attendees can talk directly with one another. Our first website sprint is this week and we hope to get all the relevant information up for you!
In the meantime, for hostels I recommend Stay (you can get private rooms if you'd like) and for hotels, I recommend the Figueroa Hotel on the higher end. Just my two cents. Again, there are a lot of places to stay.
budget place to stay for you

We opened up pre-registration
We opened up pre-registration for Drupal Design Camp LA yesterday at http://la2011.designfordrupal.com and you're all welcome to sign up. Registering for the conference is as simple as signing up for an account. We'll be launching the full site soon with information about the venue, local hotels, restaurants and coffeeshops, and begin accepting session proposals. Thanks for your patience, everyone!
Site OK?
Can someone verify that the site is OK - I'm getting an (albeit corporate) message when I goto the site. If someone can just verify that it is malware free then I can request a re-check. Thanks!
Below is the message:

The site is safe and malware free. I'm not sure why that warning message is coming up but URL Filter is part of the IPCop and Smoothwall firewalls for Linux. I'll see if I can get designfordrupal.com whitelisted.

Thanks for reporting and troubleshooting this! It turns out that the designfordrupal.com domain was used in the past to send spam (bad spammers! bad!) so the Drupal Design Camp LA 2011 site is now at http://2011.ddcla.org

No go on the registration :(
Quick and dirty fix
I'm sure this will be fixed shortly, but if you want to register -right now-, you can go to the LA Design for Drupal page and enter this in your address bar: javascript:$('#user-register').attr('action','/');void(0);
All that does is alter the form to not redirect to robots.txt.
Clearing the cache appeared
Clearing the cache appeared to fix the problem. Please try registering again, and please accept our apologies!
The form's action attribute was actually set to "robots.txt" in the HTML source (so the form was actually submitting to "robots.txt"). Has anyone seen this before?

Yes, Drupal Design Camp LA is still on!
Yes, Drupal Design Camp LA is still on! Contracts with the venue have been signed, T-shirts are being printed and we even have some of LA's best food trucks lined up for when we pour out of the building during lunchtime.
At last count, 160 people have registered at http://2011.ddcla.org and at the current rate of registrations we'll have over 200 people registered by the day of the camp.
I'm sorry for the lack of news but whether the camp is happening has never been in question for us here in Los Angeles. The DDCLA team will be sprinting tomorrow and launching the full site tomorrow night. There hasn't been a whole lot of promotion and rabble-rousing on our end because DDCLA was envisioned from the beginning as more of a BarCamp-style event rather than the mega camp that DrupalCamp LA has traditionally been.
Do you have any preferred ways that you'd like to present remotely? Our venue used to have a datacenter in one of the bank vaults and the building has a massive pipe.
Something similar
I had thought of coming to this camp as the Design camps fit exactly with what I do, but pretty hard to book a flight for something that looks like it may not happen. With one week left to the event is there going to be an official site, session submissions, etc?

design implementation for Drupal
Hello there,
I am a new designer/developer, and new to drupal, and I need help in designing my projects. I have designed few websites on Garland and Sky themes; I think they are the best choice, however, my clients are demanding more than just a CMS, a fully designed site. Please check the following examples: I could alternatively design and develop the few pages of landing and use drupal for all the Wiki, blog, forum and other fun stuff. I am trying to do all this on Drupal preferably. Please let me know of any ways to accomplish this task, any book references, or anything i can do to super design the drupal sites. Please reply back as I am counting on Drupal community support for this preliminary info.

Your post is a bit off-topic, so don't be surprised if you don't get much help here. The place you left this comment is actually the announcement of a Drupal conference that's coming up this weekend.
You're more than welcome to attend the conference! For that, visit http://2011.ddcla.org and create an account. If you're not in Los Angeles, though, then your post is really off-topic and I suggest visiting a Drupal user group in your area and ask to be guided in the right direction.
The post you link to is also unlikely to receive the response you want. The place you posted that is the working issue queue for the Drupal project, not a general help forum. For that, see http://drupal.org/forum
Actually, it's WAY off-topic
The link you posted to is the issue queue for Drupal Core. You should close/remove that since it goes to the Drupal Core maintainers. Your best bet are the forums, as Christefano pointed out.
As far as book reviews, there's lots of really good ones, but I'd suggest Using Drupal by the Lullabots Crew. You can see my mini-review here:

Come on people, give up the knowledge, hey i am in Orlando, and you guys in LA, commonality, guess what, Disney!
Time of the sessions?
I checked out the site: http://2011.ddcla.org/sessions but when I looked for the times that the sessions may be held at, I don't see any.
All I know is that it's an overall day thing between 10am to 5pm.
I'm pretty new to the whole Drupal thing, and some of the sessions do sound interesting, but I need to know the time they're held at ... assuming I'm able to make to it.
Can anyone tell me the timing of the sessions? Unless somehow I missed it, in that case, apologies!
Thanks.
Hey there, I just posted this
Hey there, I just posted this to http://2011.ddcla.org/node/67 and you're welcome to join the discussion there.
We're at the Spring Arts Tower in Downtown Los Angeles. See the Directions to DDCLA page for the address and directions to the venue.
The conference starts at 10am and goes to 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday. We'll have sessions being offered all day long, and because this is a BarCamp-style event we're setting the schedule together on Saturday morning.
This is a volunteer-run conference and everyone is welcome to participate. Attendees themselves can become volunteers and organizers if they want. In fact, everyone is encouraged to participate.
So, if you want to attend a session on a specific topic, suggest that session in our discussion forum and someone might step forward to present it! If you're ready to present on something then please make sure your computer, slides and demo sites ready. See the Sessions: What you need to know page for more info.
If this doesn't answer your question, please let us know -- or just show up at the conference and be prepared to have a good time!
If you're interested in more structure, a more finalized session schedule and more hype and promotion, you'll definitely enjoy DrupalCamp LA, which is planned for later this year.

I echo this. Great weekend. I'm already pushing @font-face with a client to replace their current Cufón implementation (because they want text_resize to actually work). So, even as a developer, I got a lot out of this event.
