Time to start planning the next DrupalCampNYC!

Forest made a good point at the meetup last night, that it's probably too late now to have another camp in 2010 - December is pretty much useless for events, and November is too short notice. So shall we plan on late January? Ideally we could do an 'intro camp' one Saturday two weeks before the main camp.

How about (subject to venue availability) an intro camp on Saturday the 15th of January, and a camp on Saturday the 29th of January?

As with past camps, most of the discussion and planning will happen on the organizer's mailing list - https://lists.mayfirst.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/drupalcampnyc - but lets have some of the initial discussion here on GDO.

So first question - does this seem like a reasonable timeframe?

Great!

Drupaling in NYC since 2009!

When?

fmb_3's picture

january, people are just getting over the holidays.
February tends to be a good time in this area.
Still cold enough to have people inside because once it starts warming up, more interest in being outside than in.

Late January, early February sounds like a good time and enough time to get ample planning going

Couple of things

winston's picture

How long does it take to get over the holidays? January 29th isn't long enough?

Anyway, I'm up for January or February. Maybe early Feb would be good...

Also, for those just seeing this it is worth pointing out that the discussions about our camp planning up till now have envisioned two camps a year. One "high profile" similar to what was done in July. The other lower profile and if not truly unconference at least more so than the one we just had in July.

In another interesting development I think there is some interest in having the camp be a themed or targeted camp of some sort. Open to discussion...

A Student's Perspective

ibdunkin's picture

I like the idea of using these dates. For the intro camp, more people will be able to attend since it is on a three day weekend, especially students. It's also not too close to the Winter Holidays or February Break, so it will be less likely for people to be out of town. This also happens to coincide perfectly with my final exam schedule :)

As for date/time, I'm in for

banghouse's picture

As for date/time, I'm in for Jan or Feb. Either works for me.

As for camp theme, it might make sense to focus on all things D7 since it's just gone Beta. And anything related to theming best practices is of interest to me.

D7 as main theme

kbell's picture

I agree - or at least one entire "track" could be focused on D7 - upgrading in general (cover new features, changes to the overall "metaphor", etc.), then themes and custom module migration and general development-process adjustments we need to make.

DCNYC9 streaming live?

kbell's picture

I have been watching DrupalCampMTL (drupalcampmontreal.com) today, and they're streaming the main presentations live. It's SO cool. Is there any chance we could so the same for DCNYC9?

In the spirit of nationalism, competition (and Community benefit), if we could even pull off streaming on multiple channels to cover all the simultaneous sessions, that would be so great. It would also ameliorate the awful misgivings we all have from having to choose between three different must-see (but simultaneous) sessions.

I don't know the folks at NYU Poly well enough to be able to find out this information unaided, but I would think that it might be at least a possibility.

If I can do anything to help make this happen I'd love to do. I'm planning to volunteer as a dogsbody ("gofer") in any case.

Thoughts?

DCNYC9 streaming

tom_o_t's picture

If you want to try and make it happen, that's great. Last time we had one person filming every session he went to, and another couple of people filming a few others. It's pretty much on you and anyone else that's interested to figure out what would be involved and get enough people together to do it. I'd recommend joining the organizer's email list (linked above). I don't think you would need anything from NYU Poly (or wherever the venue ends up being), but if you do please let me know and I can reach out to them.

Filming

kbell's picture

I would love to film, but I don't have access to good-enough quality camera to do so. I used my Flip on the IntroCamp for the morning session, but I could only record an hour's worth of video, and the time it takes to transfer in between means I might miss the first couple of minutes after I run out of room. If anyone has an extra camera they can spare on the days of, I'll be happy to film in the sessions I'm attending at the very least, and if there's too much cross-over with other filmers, I can leave my camera unattended in a different room, and work the security for that out somehow.
I haven;t tried it, but I'll check and see if there's any way to stream using the Flip. I think that would be really ideal, to stream the video live.

Documenting vs. creating re-usable material

LP's picture

As a part time documentarian and consumer of drupal tutorial videos, I feel there's a bit of a difference between posterity documentation & creating good reference material. I would prefer to have screencasts + audio as a final product over video of the room. Yeah, it's more clinical, but the screen will be legible, the audio much cleaner, and it's potentially easier to collect the material. There are a number of free/cheap screen recording packages, and portable flash based recorders for $100.

  • Is creating HQ captures of sessions important to us?
  • Is it worth having some gear / site licenses belong to the NYC Drupal community? (I know that can be complicated)

If the answer is yes to both, then the session submission form could streamline the process:

  • Would you like to record your session? (When asking some folks at DCNYC8, they basically said "It's not really ready to be put to tape")
  • Will you be bringing your own machine for presentation?
  • If so, what platform?

Quicktime screencast recording

kbell's picture

FYI, it's SUPER-easy and FREE to make a screencast with ambient audio if you have a Mac - no extra anything to install or configure; the software is there out of the box. You just open Quicktime.app, and from the File menu select "Make New Screen Recording". It takes what's on the screen + any audio in the built-in mic's range, and records away. Then the export functions are easy and well-configured. I highly recommend this for screencast-style tutorial videos - it's just so fast and foolproof.

Streaming Video

banghouse's picture

I taped a bunch of sessions at DrupalCamp NYC 8 and may do it again at Drupal Camp NYC 9. I had two cameras going; 1 in sessions I was in and 1 in sessions I wanted to be in.

Streaming could be done for select sessions. Perhaps a specific room(s) could be designated as a location for sessions previously determined to be streamed. Perhaps determined by expectation of community interest. (Poll?)

At least as far as NYU Poly is concerned I found that certain rooms were better equipped than others for getting good video/audio. The 4th floor rooms in particular were acoustically treated and had quieter HVAC. Also the presenters seemed to more naturally utilize the podium microphones than they did in other rooms.

(Presenters FYI (Some audio stuff to consider): Using the podium mic makes presentations exponentially better on video. It also makes post production easier in terms of not having to fight with "fixing" bad audio. Since bad audio really CAN'T be fixed. Obviously with these types of presentations audio matters WAY MORE than the video. Also when the session goes to Q&A it's good if a presenter repeats the question into the mic before answering it.)

Never been compelled to

rgracia's picture

Never been compelled to attend a camp. They always seem developer focused. This would be my first. I would love to see some theming specific sessions. Don't care about the dates. Jan or Feb would both work.

Theming-specific sessions

fureigh's picture

Theming-specific sessions seem to be on the rise, and there are always lots of good site-building sessions. Come on out to the next DrupalCamp! :)

So far

Pistachio Pony's picture

So far the dates in January are fine for me. I would go to the intro camp and main camp.
I am really looking forward to it. I want to be better at using Drupal so bad! Anything Themey would be great. I want to grow up to be a Themer.

Design Track

johnvsc's picture

Coming back from D4D in Prague -> I would like to see / orchestrate a true Design Focused track. Here are some thoughts about what I envision:

  1. Art for Art's Sake: Usually, alot of times when we try to do something in Drupaland concerning design - the technicalities of the medium overshadow the aesthetics - so, I would like to see a track that talks about pure Design | UX | Typography -> all abstracted from the platform. Let it just be understood that Drupal is our Framework.
  2. Three MCs and One DJ: Being a visual artist, I am by nature a lone wolf. Getting together and organizing things really goes against my grain... it is funny, because this community / activity is such the anomaly in my life. I wonder, in stead of trying to organize design _______ as a large group or doing it by ones self; what if we focused on designer / front end developer relations? Two / three people getting together to create certain informational / design structures?
  3. Cart before the Hearse: To the point above: maybe the Design Track at the next DrupalCampNYC is a culmination of efforts - instead of the traditional beginnings? (I am speaking of, historically, the D4D world) What if the above cells were to show what they did over the previous months? The designs / Implementations that they produced. So the discussion is about design and solutions - not programing and problems?
  4. Audience: I don't think that programmatic prowess is even a conversation here: aesthetics is. There are plenty of us in this community who can do anything with this amazing platform: therefore, let it be open to anyone who has any kind of sense of sensibility; regardless of where they know what a function is or even cares too....

By doing so - we open the door to those who kinda have been peeking in from outside.

BRAVO

Pistachio Pony's picture

Now that's a camp idea! I love it, I have a visual arts background and have found myself spending a lot of time boning up on my programming skills and really wanting to have design conversations since the programming is really just a way to get my design ideas out there.

Reach out to designers

screener's picture

How can Drupal make the case that this is the best platform for a stong designer to get their work online? Maybe a profile called ArtistPortfolio? A profile built for designers?

Your link from vsc_wired made a big impact on me:

Portfolio site options

Nifty!

LP's picture

This is a neat concept, and I can envision derivatives, ala security/community/freelancing (like the BoF that happened at the end of camp8). Re: the BoF, the discussion had certain Drupal-centric bits, but could have engaged a pretty diverse group of folks. Opening all of those cans at once is probably a bit much, but it would provide a unique opportunity to bring both additional eyes, and additional contributors to the camp. Maybe this already happens at cons, I wouldn't know..

Anyway, I like. If this happened it definitely opens up a new group of folks who I would encourage to attend.

Great Ideas John

I like idea #3 especially. And of course we'd love to hear another Drupal rap. ;0)

Design and Theming Track

I would like to see a designers and themers track. I am happy to help with organizing this.

Design & Theme

Designers & Themers track will be of interest to me as well!

DrupalCamp NYC would be great: 15 and 29 Jan are good dates

Smag's picture

I'd love to see and learn about any health-related product development that's going on, all about HTML5, and approaches to handling both small- and large-screen user experiences elegantly. Also, I'm a huge fan of charting and mapping tools.

So is Jan 29 a "real" date?

kbell's picture

Has anything been officially decided on as the date for DC9? For the record, any Saturday Jan or Feb is fine for me also.

I love the Themer's Track for the camp; I just wish I could go to all of the sessions offered instead of having to choose!

No, it isn't

winston's picture

Last discussions were talking April time frame, but I don't think there is a definite date yet.

Anyone interested in making a camp happen please sign up for the DrupalCampNYC mailing list at https://lists.mayfirst.org/mailman/listinfo/drupalcampnyc. That is where the detailed planning happens. Also, feel free to come to the next meetup and bring it up there.

It's all volunteers so if folks don't volunteer to help make it happen ... it doesn't.

29th is fine great

I vote for later Feb. or March. I would like to have time to practice stuff from Intro Camp before a new camp. I think that I will get a lot more out of the regular camp that way.

List of DrupalCamps and Cons - Maybe May 14-15th

johnvsc's picture

Drupal Camps

February 12, 2011 = Florida DrupalCamp 2011
May 05, 2011 = Finland (Helsinki) DrupalCamp 2011
June 11-12, 2011 = Colorado DrupalCamp 2011
Design 4 Drupal Boston - Sometime During the summer

DrupalCon
March 07-10, 2011 = Chicago DrupalCon 2011
August 21-26 = London DrupalCon 2011

While very incomplete, based on this list above, I would shoot for May 14-15th. That will give us enough time after ChiCon and before LonCon.

I was going to try to bring D4D to NYC this summer as a full weekend camp -> but I didn't want to interfere with the Boston D4D .... So, rather than trying to do that, I will bring that effort to NYC-DC9 and devote time to a D4D track within.

How does that sound?

D4D in NYC-DC9

Thanks for putting that list

tom_o_t's picture

Thanks for putting that list together John. I'd been thinking about shooting for April sometime, but May would work too. I'll follow up again with NYU Poly.

I'm probably just clueless, but...

kbell's picture

Thanks for putting the list together, John. And I may just be an idiot, but does it really matter about other cities' local Camps and being simultaneous with our dates? DrupalCon I can totally see of course, but the locals, and/internationals (especially) Camps? Eventually there's always going to be a conflict and I hate to think of us only doing one Camp a year because of other cities' Camp schedules...

I too was hoping for April.
Cheers,

DCNYC9

tom_o_t's picture

A quick update - we had a few issues getting insurance for NYU Poly, but that's looking very close to being resolved (massive thanks to Alex and Zivtech). Once that's cleared up we'll firm up a date. I agree with Kelly that we don't need to worry about international camps in our scheduling. April/May still seem very possible.
