Using panels and views for a news site

Hi all,

My communications team would like a news type of site with main stories, images, and have it updated regularly. I've had good success with implementing a lot suggestions that i've found on the group but i'm having trouble over one issue. I'm hoping to use panels and then have views as blocks but can I theme these view blocks? I would full control over styling and theming the panel and all the view blocks but i don't know the best way to do this. I haven't found any good documentation on this.

Archive pages with articles sorted by sections

I'm building a newspaper site, and along with it, an archive of all our past issues. When somebody selects on a particular issue, it will list all the articles from that issue. What I'd like to accomplish is what this site does (http://tinyurl.com/nuvw4t).

(Note: I tried submitting the original URL, but apparently the spam filter here doesn't like the word "5ocialist". Red Scare?!)

Suggestions for commercial streaming media hosting providers

Looking for suggestions for an affordable media hosting service to deploy our streaming video. ( http://www.gazettenet.com )

We have been using YouTube/Vimeo so far, but have requirements now for commercial content that is outside of the licensing for those free services.

Thanks.

Discussion on the modules-for-newspapers list

I've just updated the list of modules that might be useful for newspapers. This page is intended to host any discussions concerning the wiki list.

(I know the list overhaul was kind of drastic, but since I compiled most of the original list I figured no-one would be more upset than me. The old list can still be found on this page.)

Cheers!

Archive!

Dear all!

I am using d6.13 and building a site for a monthly magazine which has 10 categories of news. I am adding the respective articles under each categories ex.

www.mysite.com/news
www.mysite.com/beautytips
www.mysite.com/politics
www.mysite.com/technology
www.mysite.com/marketwatch
etc

which will be the regular links.

What I am looking for is to know how to bind all these articles together? Something like a book module... When its archived, all these should happen simultaneously.

Regards
Jo

FeedAPI and AP Webfeeds

I was wondering if anyone had discovered a way to fetch AP Webfeeds using FeedAPI on Drupal 6?

So far, I can't seem to get anything to go through. I'd like to be able to retrieve the data and use the Mapper to create nodes, but I don't know if that's going to be possible with the current feed parser.

Simplenews + Mime Mail + Drupal 6 = Broken Images

I realize this is probably not the best place to ask this one, but the developer of Mime Mail seems to be pretty much inactive, and I figured some other folks in the newspaper industry might have run across this one.

I'm using Simplenews, Drupal 6, and Mime Mail to create a daily newsletter of our top stories. I've created a view called Newsletter and used PHP to call the different blocks I've set up to display the story title, the thumbnail image, and the teaser text.

10 sessions in media related field for the next DrupalCon in Paris and more to come ? Please help to choose

I think it would be good to give an extra visibility to the proposed sessions in media related field for the next DrupalCon in Paris.

It's time to register http://paris2009.drupalcon.org/user

Once registered :

You can register your vote

Now you still have some time to be able to vote on them, so we can see which sessions are on the top of your lists and plan the schedule accordingly.
Get busy using your right to vote again, as this is your event!
Deadline will be Sunday, 12th July
Here is how you do it (if you don't know already):
Step 1
Go to the sessions list.
Step 2
Browse through it by filtering etc. Once you have found a topic that you want to vote for, click on the button in the upper right corner:
Step 3
Once it is green, it shows that you have voted and you can see all the sessions in My Attending Sessions in your profile.

Click again to cancel your vote.

Or you can make a session proposal to share your latest media related achievements http://paris2009.drupalcon.org/node/add/session :

just launched new news community using drupal

Hi everyone,

We've just launched a new news-site using Drupal. http://www.theblogpaper.co.uk/. We aim to publish the first free user generated newspaper in London UK by the End of August/ Beginning of September 2009.

So the concept in a nutshell basically is that users of theblogpaper.co.uk can upload articles, photos and engage in discussions. The highest rated and most discussed content will be promoted to the printed version of the blogpaper. Our intention is basically to create a weekly review of what has been going on within the blogging community, and what the community found worthy to be printed and is read by potentially more. Our main goal is to create a platform for bloggers, citizen journalists, photographers and other "content creators" which allows them to get further exposure and maybe reach out to new readerships.

Mr. Yelvington

I hope you won't mind me picking your brain here, but I was looking at your site, and I love the way you guys have that slideshow of images and captions in the story.

I was wondering which modules you were using for that effect if you don't mind me asking. I'm struggling to get the same type of effect on our new site, and it hasn't been going well for me so far.

I've been using imagefield and cck, with Lightbox, but I can't seem to get captions to show, nor can I create that sort of slideshow effect with it.

Any tips you could throw my way would be very very helpful.

Thanks sir.

How many development hours to expect?

Hello,
I'm brand spanking new to Drupal and to this forum. I poked around a bit and didn't see anything posted on this topic yet.

I've just taken on a freelance project to create a newspaper (or newspaper-like) website for a client. So far what I know is that he wants to have different departments (I'm assuming things like "current events", "sports", "entertainment", etc.) and he also wants several different people to contribute content. He wants to be able to post different types of content: text, slideshows, videos, etc. Knowing this, Drupal sounds like a good solution.

How do I get rid of the taxonomy terms display on my page?

I apologize in advance for the dumb question, but for the life of me I can't seem to find the setting to address this.

I am using Taxonomy menu in conjunction with my taxonomy vocabulary and terms to create the menus for our newspaper site. Everything works great when I click on the sub-items (terms) beneath each individual menu items/vocabulary (News, Sports, Lifestyle, Opinion, etc...). So for example, when I click on the sub-menu beneath "News": "Local News", "Local Business", "High Schools", etc... the page opens fine without issue.
