Best way to have student portfolios?

Just wondering if anyone has come up with a best practice for making eportfolios?

Could you make an ep a content type, and then be able to do a search (or view) of that? I'd like to have a place where students can post their best work, but also blog about the process, and allow comments from others.

TIA,
Bob

Auto Logout

Drupal 6.8 (soon to be 6.9)

I use automatic_logout so students won't leave their private pages open on the school computers. I set it to 5 minutes, which is fine on most cases, except when they are typing onto content/comment because automatic_logout doesn't detect the activity.

When I was commenting on other threads here, I noticed [Loading...] indicator at the top right (which I don't see it right now for some reason I don't know), and I thought if this is the way to stop students getting kicked out while they are composing something?

Drupal 6 to DrupalEd

Hi, Im new to Drupal. I have decided to try my hands on Drupal after a year experience with Joomla on my personal site. But this year, I have a project for my school website. I have already installed Drupal 6 using Fantastico Deluxe to the website http://smpaphm.net. I just found out about DrupalEd and downloaded the latest version. I have few questions if you don't mind give me some help.

1)How can I update my drupal site to DrupalEd?
2)Can I just move the folder "move to web" to the present drupal directory in my server?
3)Do I need to change the mysql and phpadmin settings?

School public-facing web site with community features and school information system tie-ins

I am leading an internal team to move the public-facing web site of our PS-12 independent school to Drupal. In this post, I share accomplishments and decisions made so far in an attempt to spread any knowledge that is useful to other institutions and gain your feedback. I consider myself an intermediate Drupal user, so some of the following may seem trivial to advanced users, whereas beginners may find it helpful as they get started. A test site is available for you to view.

head's up: local email

This project has a new maintainer and a new release has been made:
http://drupal.org/project/localemail

It would be great to have some people test it and feedback on the project page. IMO this module is a must for any school/club/business sites that need their users to create an account without having to provide an email address. The timing of this release of local email is great too, because the 'private message' module is now in release candidate - the perfect partner to take the emphasis of user communication away from using email and onto internal PMs.

Cheers.

Themes for Courses @ Penn State

I started throwing together a flickr photostream for all the courses that the e-Learning Institute is offering. I've been asked a bunch for access to courses (which is coming soon, we've started to align our infrastructure up for it) but until then screenshots will have to do.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/34495230@N08/

If anyone is interested in getting any of these please let me know, we'd really like to start cleaning these themes up by removing penn state / course specific marks and releasing them on drupal.org but interest in doing so will also dictate how quickly that happens.

Module List Review

At the University of Delaware, we are just getting started with Drupal as an officially supported resource, maybe for only 6 months or so. Having just barely more experience than most others at UD, I'm trying to help everyone get up to speed with the basics and offer suggestions how to enhance their sites from there.

Currently, the focus is on module selection. I've put together a set of modules that hopefully would satisfy most of UD's needs. We currently use Sakai as our LMS so Drupal's role is primarily for public websites for colleges, depts, programs, research centers, initiatives, faculty research groups, community sites, etc.... Drupal will also be used for internal collaboration sites.

Coherent Access Module Problem

Hi,

Drupal 6.8

Following Bill's book, I created Shared Posts using coherent_access module. The problem is that when student create a Notes node, it isn't private even though the pref is set to private by default, and it will be so when I create a Notes node. That option is not even presented to student. The permission doesn't offer student role to control the private option, and is hidden automatically.

Any help would be appreciated. -Hiro

DB Maintenance module version?

I just installed the DB maintenance module (version 6.x-1.1) and am following chapter 15 in Bill's book. I noticed that it doesn't give the options to back up the database as illustrated on p. 340.

Some searching turned up that version 2.1 (in both 5 and 6) have this capability. 2.1 for D6 is in beta. I would love the functionality but don't want to break anything. Any suggestions?

Some groups confusion

I'm on chapter 12 of Bill's book, and am not seeing things in the screenshots:

I see no Groups category when I'm logged in as admin. I have enabled the OG and OG Vocab modules. I have created the Class content type and made a test blog post, which I posted to that group. The post shows up, but when I go to the home page, I can't see a link to Groups.

Also, when I created the class, I got a message that said: The View og_ghp_ron was not found. Check your variables table or settings.php.

Again, I'm sure it's something simple, but I've gone over the instructions several times.

Hosting recommendations?

Just wondered if anyone can recommend a good host. I'm currently using A Small Orange and have generally been happy with them. However, it's a shared account, and it seems that Drupal needs at least a VPS (or VPN?).

I also host several other smaller sites, so I need reselling as well. I currently pay $15/mo for what I have (1000 Mb of space, 25Gb bandwidth, unlimited email accounts and databases, cpanel, linux, ssh, and generally excellent support).

Who does a good job with Drupal sites?

Teacher Resource Exchange Site (Advice Sought)

Hi. I found this group after following the link at drupal.org to Bill Fitzgerald's “Drupal for Education and E-Learning” book and listening to the lullabot podcast interview with him. I am here seeking some advice about a website project that my wife is very keen on implementing.

I'd like to use Drupal for a division wide site for schools and teachers (we have a corporate site, not Drupal based, but it is awkward for individual teachers to create their own web presence on it).

Digital lockers in drupal?

I just read this post from Vicki Davis about using iGoogle as a digital locker for students, and I'm wondering if we could do the same thing in Drupal. Actually, I'm sure we can, just not sure how to do it.

http://www.edutopia.org/personal-learning-networks-technology

Or would it just be simpler for the students to do this with iGoogle or Pageflakes?

Personality test - how to?

I would like to quickly create a personality test, using a quiz module or webform module. There will be multiple test questions, each answer will be adequately scored, e.g.:

Do you like tv?

a) no (3 points)
b) yes (0 points)
c) rather no (2 points)
d) rather yes (1 point)

The test will consist of for example 20 questions. I must inform the user about his test results after he has completed it. I also need some statistics about results(each of them) of the test for the admin.

Which module should I use to create this test, Is there any fast way to do that?

View to print Book Depth?

Hello, first time poster. Drupal 6.8.
I have book contents which contain the class plans of each week. The 2nd level nodes are supplement documents such as Review for Quiz. There is another level down for side notes. I would like to print them, all 14 weeks of class plans in one content body as a summary with nice hierarchal structure.

I can print them all flat using Table view, but that isn't pretty. What I am looking for is similar to collapsed book menu with extra summary field then bring it to My Group as in My Class to each student. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

backlinks not showing up

I'm on chapter 6 of Bill's book. I've successfully created 2 students (Helen and Lucy). They have created blog posts. The links between the posts are working, but the conversations block ("What links here")says "No backlinks found."

I double-checked the links from post to post, and they work correctly. I also went back through setting up the conversations view and I believe I did it correctly.

Any ideas?

I'm really enjoying setting this up and would love to get it rolling in the next week.

Fatal error

Hi folks. I'm working my way through Bill's AMAZING book on Drupal for Education. Everything has gone swimmingly until I've tried to create an Assignment content type for the teacher role (p. 109, ch. 4).

When I try to save the Assignment type with the new fields, I got the following error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: date_create() in /home/birv2/public_html/drupal6/sites/all/modules/date/date_api.module on line 642

I have all the date modules enabled as per instructions.

Any suggestions?

Bob
