Newspapers on Drupal

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is a place for people working at newspapers running on - or planning to run on - Drupal to share ideas, problems and solutions.

Categories and front page

I've done some thinking, and I want to suggest a somewhat different categorization to this group site. I'd also like to suggest some changes to front page.

Import XML news feed into drupal

I run a news website. We're considering subscribing to some XML (not rss) news feeds. I'm trying to figure out how to import the news feeds into Drupal. Is there a module that can help with this? The feeds will be uploaded to a ftp location and I need to import them from there. Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

creating or transfering good looking themes & templates for Drupal sites

My name is Olivier Bellin, and I live in Paris.

I'm an IT technology journalist and former chief editor of Computer Reseller News magazine in France (edited formerly by VNU, which created SVM and SVM Mac sites in Drupal already).

I'm planning on creating myself an IT BtoB news portal using a powerful CMS. After considering Joomla for a while, I found that Drupal is probably the best choice. I've now spent a few weeks on learning how Drupal works a bit better (I'm an user and not a programmer).

DotNetNuke for newspapers?

The magazine I'm web editor for is planning on rebuilding the web site. Main candidate has been Drupal, but yesterday DotNetNuke was suggested as an alternative. (DNN was said to have all/many of the features we were looking for right out of the box.)

I've been trying to find useful comparisons between DNN and Drupal, but so far only with modest success. (For example, opensourcecms.com doesn't have DNN, and cmsmatrix.org mainly lists a number of labels which are difficult to understand and not always relevant.)

Opportunites at DrupalCON Barcelona

All: Dries just asked for more session proposals for Barcelona, so I submitted two:

1) "Drupal and the future of news": http://barcelona2007.drupalcon.org/node/423.
I'm looking for panelists for this one. Read the description and let me know.

2) "Newspapers on Drupal BOF": http://barcelona2007.drupalcon.org/node/424
Just to reserve an hour to discuss a path forward on a "news" install profile and other shared goals.

Let me know if you're interested in participating in either one.

Online community is essential to the future of newspapers

Rich Gordon's blog item for the Readership Institute discusses a Medill School of Journalism project conducted in partnership with Yahoo and a Chicago filmmaker group. It quotes liberally from Robert Putnam, who was an inspiration for much of what we've done at BlufftonToday.com, and includes a nod to Drupal:

Modules that might be useful for newspapers

This wiki page lists a number of modules useful for newspaper sites. Please add any module you think is missing!
Discussion about this wiki is held on this page.

Last addition: Memcache API + Boost (090722)
Please note: The previous list has been moved to this page. It was old and dusty list, mainly presenting modules for Drupal 5. The drop is moving!

Dutch old media and drupal

After much internal and external politics, I am proud to say that (albeit a very small subsite), Trouw, a smaller Dutch newspaper but part of the biggest newspaper publisher PcM in the Netherlands, has choosen for Drupal. Their fist site is schrijf.trouw.nl. A site about (Dutch) writers where the public can interact and start blogging themselves about their own writings.

I will write a in depth "making of" on my site in the next couple of days and will dump the link here in a comment.

Crowdsourcing an interview

First, you'll never actually catch me use the word "crowdsource" in public, but people keep calling it that so ... :-).

Slashdot has done this sort of thing for years: Announce they're interviewing somebody and solicit questions. Then ask (or submit to) that person the questions that got the most votes. No reason it couldn't work on the non-geeky beat - it'd be a way to involve readers and might lead to questions you might not think of.

How fof.se is planning to use Drupal

As promised, here's a brief description on how we plan to use Drupal to fit our needs at the Swedish popular science magazine Forskning & Framsteg.
Since we're not planning on lauching the site for some months, some things will of course change.

  • The site is used to publish articles already written, so we'll only have a few users with publishing permission (site admin, editors and one or two semi-admins). The exception is blogs written by scientists, who will share a blogger user role.

Hi from Sweden

I thought I might introduce myself and say a few words on my relation to Drupal.

My name is Johan Falk, and I live in Uppsala, Sweden (though I work in Stockholm).
I'm technology and web editor for a Swedish popular science magazine. We're planning on changing CMS from a home-grown solution to a big and open one, and after considering Joomla for a while we found that Drupal probably is our best choice. I've now spent a few weeks on learning Drupal a bit better (I'm not a programmer), and my excitment is still accelerating.

Tearsheet (take two)

Three things have conspired recently to make me revive this concept, which I haven't worked on for a few months.

1) Lisa asked What would you do with [grant] money?

2) Then she mentioned the Tearsheet idea to Amy Gahran of the Poynter Institute. (Who previously published an interview with NoD member and Knight recipient Benjamin Melançon).

Providing Coverage of the Tahoe Fire Without Reporters

As some of you know, I work for the University of Nevada's Reynolds School of Journalism. I’ve been working with their graduate program to develop OurTahoe.org as well as individual graduate student projects looking at the new ways "Web2.0" technologies can be used by journalists. Some of the projects resulted in Drupal modules like Promise.
