Thanks to Ivan's efforts and the generosity of <a href="http://fastcompany.com/>Fast Company, we will be holding the next Drupal meetup at 7 World Trade Center. The meeting room is big, it has a projector, and there will be wi-fi available. The venue also offers 360 degree views of the city, but we don't care about that!
Date: Tuesday, 24 July 2007
Time: 7-9PM
Location: 7 World Trade Center
Special Requirements: YOU MUST CONFIRM THAT YOU ARE COMING BY 4PM ON MONDAY. *Update (If you missed the deadline, Ivan will be able to sign you in until 7pm when he heads upstairs.)
Please reply to this post with your full name to confirm your attendance. If you do not confirm by 4PM Monday, you will not get in. This is a very easy but important step. We need to have a list to the front desk security by this time. Also, bring some form of photo ID in case it is needed.
When you arrive, go through the turnstiles proceed to the C elevator bank and press 29 on the keypad. I will be available before 7PM to help everyone, but please try to arrive on time. If you have any issues, give me a call at 718-877-8494.
I believe Ivan will be talking about the Drupal project that Fast Company is working on with Lullabot. Please feel free to suggest additional topics or projects that we should focus on.

I'll be there
First time at a meetup. You can add Josh Welber to the list at the desk. Thanks - looking forward to it.
Hmmm.. I had rsvp'd, but it seems to be missing...
was there another place to respond or confirm attendance?

Please add Benjamin Horst, Gokce Akyurek, Ann Manby and John Paul Lorenti (he is a maybe) to the list. Thanks.
Edit: Also Niels Winge-Sorensen
Great to play host
The solution is not ideal, but it's the best my company can offer. Any large group meetings such as this one has to have the attendants on the list one day prior.
BTW, Lullabot will be having their theming workshop in the same space in two weeks.
The space is great
The space looks amazing and I'm definitely going to try and make it down. The signup list only worries me for one reason
Late comers and newbies. A good chunk of people that attend every month either (a) don't use the website or (b) heard about it day of through word of mouth.
I fully understand the reasoning for the signup and I realize that its an easy process to do.. I just hate shutting people out because they couldn't sign up on time.

Thank you very much....
Adam: First Thank you for stepping up the plate and really getting this done in such a short amount of time.
Ivan: Sweet.. Thanks for getting space.
but.........
I'm sorry but I really, really, really don't like the signup requirement. The list has 192 subscribers right now and less than 10% of those participate online. By my estimate over 80% of the people that come to the meetups don't participate online mainly due to a lack of time. Of the remaining 20%, 10% of those are being brought by friends/coworkers hearing about it day of (i.e. no time to signup) leaving on 10% to actual signup.
For Drupalcamp we tried really hard to get everyone to "signup" but there was still about 10% or so of the people that didn't sign up. Its common, understood and taken in stride within the Drupal community (I went to Drupalcon without signing up and I wasn't turned away at the door)
No offense to the glorious space, I'm sure its great but I would much rather go to a bar than have to sign up for a meetup. Some people just can't plan a day in advance and decide the day of.
With that said... I'm going to do my best to be there.. so sign me up. I have buttons for you guys!

We'll iron it out in the future
I didn't want to turn down a good opportunity. If everyone likes the space and sign-up is required, then I'm sure we can make the process easier next time. If it doesn't workout, that's okay too.
This might be your only opportunity to check out the new Fast Company headquarters and 7 World Trade Center, so come on down!
Stupid idea....
Is it possible to give security a 'potential list' and say we only expect about 30-40 people. When I say potential, I mean a list of, say, 192 people?
BTW, I will be there Sam Tresler and thanks for finding such a great space!

Thought of that, but...
Thought of that, but I didn't know how to get everyone's full name on such short notice. Many people don't have their full names listed in their profiles. Also, I'm not sure that this would be allowed. I will check.
Matthew Knowland
And I might be bringing Matthew Knowland no gauruntee though.

Sweet!!

Might I also suggest mirroring the Drupal Meetup information here on groups.drupal.org to a NYC Drupal Meetup group at meetup.com. It's a much better system for dealing with RSVPs and such. Plus there aren't any NYC Drupal Meetups listed over there and there is even a list of 17 people waiting for one. So to the powers that be, just a suggestion.

i'll be there i hope

On the issue of using this site or meetup, I greatly prefer to keep it within the drupal community and sites. Maybe you can post a link to those folks at meetup.com so they know where to look for these events. Mirroring these events, trying to coordinate them from two different sites, can only cause confusion and problems in the future. Also, I hope that we will not be in the position of having to provide attendee lists ahead of time in the future.
no.. bad..
yes meetup.com is designed for these type of events BUT this is the Drupal community, the place for ALL drupal communication is on groups.drupal.org and Drupal.org. We've had this discussion before and the overwhelming consensus is that people should use groups.drupal.org. Remember of course that there are groups for many, many different aspects of Drupal (like high performance, events, theming, etc.)
besides.
1) meetup.com charges, g.d.o doesn't.
2) meetup.com doesn't run on open source software; g.d.o does
3) meetup.com doesn't support openID, g.d.o will
4) meetup.com is a for profit company helping to support themselves. g.d.o is working to support Drupal
If we are creating a Drupal community then we should be participating to the fullest in that community so I actively discourage "mirroring" or using meetup.com to "pull users over". Those users should take five minutes to read drupal.org, participate in the community and learn about groups.drupal.org. If they don't learn about groups.drupal.org then they are missing out on the entire purpose of Drupal.org. The community is what makes this software great not just simply the software.
Finally signing up for a meetup is a new and, hopefully, one-time event. Although I fully appreciate all of the hard work that Adam has put into this and the awesome meetup spot graciously offered by Fast Company this is a meetup and should be open to all. Having a signup sheet shifts the "meeting up" purpose of "meetups" to a defined meeting or lecture; which is not what meetups are about, at least not these meetups.
If in the future a signup sheet is required a WIKI page will be created, on groups.drupal.org, so that users can manually add themselves to the sheet similar to how the Barcamps were setup.

I agree in principle, but...
I was visiting Drupal.org and reading it and Googling various things Drupal for at least 3-4 months before I found that Groups.drupal.org even existed.
I don't think it hurts to put pointers elsewhere, from a marketing point of view.
I also don't think it is a huge hardship to have to put your name on a list one day ahead.

sheesh.. people
A hard list is a bad idea
Nobody is arguing that doing a signup is a bad idea but omitting those that haven't signed up is. That's the issue. Its currently 5:30pm the deadline was 4pm if you didn't sign up for the Drupal meetup you can't get in. Fully understandable for the venue and this meetup but it does defeat the purpose of a "meetup" in my opinion.
What if I want to bring along a coworker?
What if I found out about it day of?
I ran the meetups for the past year (As well as the DrupalCamps) and in my experience 40% of the meetup group were drop-ins (never used groups.drupal.org) and about 10% (or more) of those at Drupalcamp never signed up for it.
Now about meetup.com, nobody is saying to NOT put anything on meetup.com. Go ahead and put something up there. What we are saying is don't USE it. We should use groups.drupal.org for organizing, announcements, etc.
The Drupal community is powerful because of how it interacts with the Open Source community and within itself. Keeping communication centralized to groups.drupal.org and drupal.org gives us a central place to find about all things drupal.

I See
I see, If I knew they charged I wouldn't have suggested it, I was unaware since I use the site only as a user and not an organizer. I think you Jacob, Adam, and others are doing a wonderful Job and I merely wanted give others like myself access to the wealth of information available at these meetings.

We'll be at the front door until 7pm
If you missed the deadline, Ivan will be able to sign you in until 7pm when he heads upstairs.
Actually, I may not be able to attend
I realized i Have a project i have to put the finishing touches on today and will not be able to make it, I believe in accountability so just wanted to make sure you got an accurate head count.
Please add any new names
I will try to add them to the list. The space is new for us, so I am still unclear about all the building procedures. Thanks.
Jeff Henigson will attend
Thanks.
