BusDriver's picture

I am looking for a tutor to learn Drupal from the ground up.

I live in midtown manhttan - and hoping to spend a few hours a week with someone who can help me out.

I have ZERO experience, but am somewhat intelligent. :D

Hope to hear from someone.

Work through the new Using Drupal book

marketanomaly's picture

Work through the new Using Drupal book, http://www.usingdrupal.com/, and you should be good to go. I wish they had that book when I started. You should post your request for a tutor as a job and it will appear in the jobs section.

I'm in a similar situation

I'm new to drupal and sadly in the NYC burbs - I'd be very interested in meeting in a coffee-shop in midtown once a week or maybe more often with other new-to-drupal sorts to share tips and generally make the learning more pleasurable and efficient.

Do it now

psalmonjr's picture

If you don't mind I would like to be part of this group as well. We really need to meet next week so we would have time to learn something before Drupal6 Camp. I don't want to waste this opportunity. I am available during daytimes from 9am-1pm. I work nights 3-12mid. Would this time period work for you? Let me know. Thanks

Weekly Drupal Meetup

lawlorg's picture

There is a Drupal meetup every Wednesday at a cafe in the lower east side that might be helpful for this. I am a Drupal beginner (working through "Using Drupal") and have attended this group before and found it pretty enlightening.

Unfortunately for @psalmonjr it's in the evenings...

Best regards,
Graham.

I'm interested in being a part of new-to-drupal team that would meet regularly and identify and work on a team project as a way to make learning drupal more efficient and more pleasurable.

Best case would be a situation where NYC experienced Drupal group members would be willing to act as team-mentors - no expectation of regular in-person meeting, but a resource.

Team size -> Not more than 4 people (Assumption that because these would be ongoing projects people will roll-in/roll-out)

Project -> A resource that would be useful for some not-for-profit organization. Project would be developed entirely autonomously.

Ancillary benefit -> Teams may develop tools that would facilitate team formation , mentor-team communication and a useful team experience archive.

I'd like to think that it would be possible to publicize this in advance of NYC Drupalcamp and that if a team or teams formed before NYC Drupalcamp that some time could be set aside for teams to identify potential mentors.

General feedback and feedback on how to publicize to new-to-drupal people would be greatly appreciated.

my two sense

johnvsc's picture

This is a great post! and a great idea. I think that can solve alot of questions that people have... if they are involved.

It is good to keep an open mind and let those who are interested in doing this come and step up to the table. Also, here is an idea that should be considered: The Drupal community has had alot of crtis and negativity concerning why it doens't support turn-key solutions; like Word-Press. Even on the theme level, there are not that many world class theme that d.o has to offer (d.o = drupal.org and g.d.o = groups.drupal.org). I think that reasons for this are:

  1. Drupal is a powerful frame work that is flexible and came be almost anything
  2. nearly all of the time, people (esp clients) want their site to do very specific things in a specific way
  3. ALL people really would prefer that their site look different than anything else

Devs want to make something that is very module: Designers need to make things that are very singular ... and that is a BIG part of the problem. I am not really for free themes on d.o. I am relaly for free elements that can be assembled in different ways not make new themes.

In terms of not-for-profits, I really don't want to create something that we learn on and donate it to insertsomething.org. I guess it comes from being an artist: people would say "OH, I'll buy the paints" as if my time and skill weren't worth anything. I think a not-for-profit needs ESPECIALLY expereinced developers ... because they can't afford to have it break... or not be built right.

So, what do I believe when it comes to this idea? Simple: let's start one. see where it takes us. see if peopel want to do it. See what moths fly to the Flame. Me, i can't learn anything by Tutorial. I cna't stand books that are one big tutorial... my mind does not process information like that. So, my input is that you add elements to a site that would create funcitonality: Let's create a calendar and add it to the site. Ok, now how can we use this to display information?

The idea is that everyone has their own way of doing something. No one really owns the Truth (although China and Hegel still believe that ) let's get people up and running, show them the options, and let them decide for themselves.

ok, back to work

johnvsc

oh, repost that ... or take a poll on nyc g.d.o. see how many people bite. if no one does, then, well, build it your self ;) but you might be surprised. Say "how many people would like to join me in creating a test dev site to learn about making Drupal sites!"

drupal beginners team

luciastern's picture

I'm interested in this. I think it would be a good way to learn how to problem-solve with drupal, not just to build a one-off site. As a beginning drupal user, I can see that having a mentor would be a good way to keep frustration from overwhelming the initial learning period.

Thanks johnvsc

Last night's meeting with you was terrific. Thanks for the help.

As for a possible newbie meeting, if a few of us newbies just setup a time and date to meet up at a coffee shop, with a clean install of Drupal on our machines or take johnvsc up on the offer to put up a hosted installation sandbox for us to play in, that could be the way to start. Looks like there are 3 or 4 just in this thread that want to do it, so I'll put up the suggested date/time/place: Monday, June 22nd at 3pm - Gregory's Coffee 25th and Park Ave. ...they have free wifi there.
Can we have a head count?

Monday meeting for drupal newbies

luciastern's picture

Monday, June 22 at 3 pm would work for me.

Forgot to say that I found the presentation last night very good. Thanks johnvsc.

If we don't get 3 or 4 in,

bixx's picture

If we don't get 3 or 4 in, maybe someone can suggest another date.

themersguild.com

johnvsc's picture

Hey everyone,

I purchased themersguild.com this morning and will create a multi-site install on that where we can play (and break things). I think that will be fine. maybe we can setup a nycproject1.themersguild.com where we can play

maybe this site just links up ninja themers and newbies. of course the focus here is the front end and theming.

in terms of time lines, well, paying customers come first... and my queue is a little full... but who knows, once that insomina kicks in.. i might just have it up and running on Monday :)

Meetup at Gregory's Coffee still going on?

casaswing's picture

Hi everyone,

Is the meetup at Gregory's Coffee still going on? Just confirming.

I was planning to go

luciastern's picture

but I'm having problems installing Mamp in the right place on my mac.

gregory's

luciastern's picture

I am there now--in a blue sweater near the back. anyone else?

Sorry I missed you

casaswing's picture

I came by a bit late (3:45) and I didn't see anyone I recognized, so I left. Sorry I missed you. I could have helped.

I hope we can try this again. I really like where this group is going.

luciastern's picture

and phone numbers, maybe.

I'm on the Upper West Side, and I'll offer my place and some beer, coffee, tea. Or maybe we could choose a place downtown near the path or near 42nd/34th west if NJ people are planning to come.

this is great ... however,

johnvsc's picture

I can't make it because I am working :( but really :)

Ping me on the IRC if you have a question.

Also, i installed have to install themerguild.com ... well, if you go to the page, you will see that it is there are ready to go ... just have to add a settings.php file

but the db is ready .. to go

I would say, work on it, but i would prefer to have a seasoned pro there working with you ....
so, if one is there, well, ping me on the irc and i will send you the ftp info and instructions :)

also, for a good project, it might be good to set themersguild.com.org as a mentor/tutor site linkup site.... as this is prob beyond the scope of g.d.o and d.o

I'd be interested in participating.

jpowell-gdo's picture

I'm a decent themer and would be interested in helping out those who are starting out. Likewise, I would love to hook up with some advanced themers who could I could learn from and hone my craft. Great idea, John!

I'd be interested in participating.

jpowell-gdo's picture

I could also help with the site if you need an extra pair of hands. :)

come to gregory's!

luciastern's picture

:-) kidding

unless you happen to be free, but please do help, that would be great.

Would have loved to!

jpowell-gdo's picture

Would have loved to! I'm part of the Jersey contingent and couldn't get in today, though. I'm definitely interested in helping out where I can! :)

I am getting tied up

bixx's picture

I am getting tied up today...not likely for me.

Helping with local Drupal builds

casaswing's picture

Hi everyone,

Didn't want all this enthusiasm to go away. I am willing to help with getting some local Drupal builds up on your machines to have you work with them. I don't have a place and a time, but if you are interested, I can probably help anyone interested running with local builds using MAMP (done it before, several times), WAMP or XAMPP (for Windows, haven't done it before, but I'm pretty sure I can figure it out relatively quickly), and LAMP (for Linux, just learned to perform installs (twice) on a Ubuntu Server VM, so I can probably figure it out on Linux in a LAMP build).

If anyone can suggest a time and a place, maybe we can try this again. Let me know if you are interested.

I agree!

johnvsc's picture

Even though i am Slammed with work and life stuff!

I don't know what it is like for this weekend ... but I can make time to help out and set some people up too... and explain some things.

Also, we can work on the drupal install that I created on my server.

How about the 3rd or the 5th? We should look at finding a spot where we can work (and play) that will become a steadfast meeting place...

Anywhere from downtown to mid town (even Sony Plaza) for an "installfest" (that's what the Chicago Drupal User Group - CDUG - calls them).

I've done Wamp in the intro to drupal training at previous Drupalcamp NYCs, and I run Ubuntu on my home and laptop PCs so should have no problem especially with Ubuntu or other debian installs.

Not this weekend for me though...

New York City Drupal Installfest - Interested?

casaswing's picture

Thanks guys. Like the "installfest" term.

So looks like we have three people interested in helping with sandbox Drupal installs. Fantastic! Along with the install on johnvsc's server, we have potential to learn about working with Drupal without an install.

If you are interested, even if the time and place johnvsc suggested doesn't work with your schedule, chime in. I'd personally would love to know who is interested. And we can work from there to set a time (or a place if Sony Plaza does not work for you). Thanks.

morning or afternoon?

johnvsc's picture

depends on where everyone is :)
i can make it in the morning ... say around 10am? is that good?

Is this still going on?

R-H's picture

I've been teaching myself Drupal and making some progress but I would appreciate the ability to learn in a group setting.

Thanks

Of Course :)

johnvsc's picture

This event is still planned ... we have a little under a month to get it going ... I will post information as we get closer to the date ...

Sounds like something I need

iwoman's picture

Looking forward to it :-)

Sandbox url

iwoman's picture

I went there (see url above), created an account, but was denied access to admin. Am I missing something? Thanks...

Yeah, actually we are missing something ...

johnvsc's picture

because we are figuring out how to work things out :)

First of all, thanks for creating an account and wanting to play in the sandbox :)
Second, I think how this is going to work is that you should request an account for www.themersguild.org <-- this is an Open Atrium sites where all the "projects" will be discussed ... from there you can pick and choose what projects you want to play along with :)

There is not much there now, btw as we are just starting up ... so you get to be involved on the ground floor.

Finally, signup for the themers play day if you haven't ... we love the n00bies!
