Drupal and the crashing server

Hi all,

I have a problem. Yesterday a very large influx of visitors to our site brought down our server! :( After some investigation we noticed that we had about 10K visitors in a 9min span before our server went down. We were told by our tech support that our server requires more memory (currently at 2GB) and to reduce the phpMemory limit (currently at 128MB) as well the the number of maximum Clients served.

Page Load performance and CPU impact

Hi all,

I am wondering about the impact of gzipping CSS and JS files (after aggregation) in comparison to CPU cycles. In our Drupal site I have installed and enabled the JS and CSS aggregation modules, but they weren't utilized. So after some investigation I asked our hosts tech support and they confirmed that we're not serving resources compressed. From what I understood it was not enabled on the server side.

I was told that utilizing compression (gzip) would not provide me significant amount of savings, but impact the CPU cycles substantially.

Drupal Gardens 7 Main Menu both across the top and in sidebar

I'm taking a Drupal Gardens web site to my own hosting, and need to display in the sidebar the 'sub' menu items for the section the user clicked into. The Main Menu is across the top, with flyouts. Now, the sidebar needs to have menu items, not the top most level, just the fly outs.

There are many ways in D6 to do this. I'm now working in D7 and feeling out of sorts, given I want to give admin control over this. I've done it several ways in d6, including add on modules or my own custom php snippets.

Git Remotes

I was reading the site builders guide to Git (http://drupal.org/node/803746) and had a question about renaming remotes across all environments. The guide indicates to only rename the remote on your local development environment to point to your new repository.

When I update/commit/push to my new repository everything is fine, but when I pull to my development or staging environment and run git status, I get a notice that my branch is ahead of origin/xxxxxxx by 3 commits.

Should I rename the remotes in all environments to point to my repository as origin??

Webform - entering text issues in Firefox

As some of you know, I was having some issues with not being able to input text in my webform in Firefox. After some digging, I discovered that for some reason the border-box, box sizing in my contrib theme's base css file was conflicting with the arrange fields module. I am using Drupal 7 with Corolla as my theme.

Changing of menu item changes login form

Hi all,

I have a bit of a problem and I'm not quite sure how to tackle it. I have created a new menu that is set to display in a sidebar to authenticated users and contains only 3 items. One of the items links to 'user' so that the users can manage their account information.

I just found out that when I change the title of the menu item, it also changes the headline title of the login form. (see attached image) Why? And better do you have any ideas where I can look to solve this problem?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Is Drupal right for my current project?

I am currently assessing Drupal as a possible solution for building an application intensive website. A dynamic form builder with built-in editor, a tool for querying data based on up to 25 conditions/user choices. These can be anything from drop-down menus, to check boxes. The query result must also be on the same page as the search form. Basically all of the site examples I have seen for Drupal are information sites, like say a magazine or charity, or eCommerce sites. Does Drupal work well with business applications and sites that require many data-entry forms?

Want to learn more about GIT?

In case you missed it, Randy Fay (rfay), posted that there will be live training & support sessions for Git. Are you a maintainer that hasn't gotten on the Git bandwagon yet? Are you curious about why Git rocks? Then these live training sessions are for you. Please note that I simply noticed his post & wanted to share w/the LA Drupal community in case others have missed it (the 1st one is next week).

More good news! They're using Webex for the live stream which means there's the usual support for Windows & Mac but ALSO Linux support & even Solaris!

gdo/la event creation and CAPTCHA error

On the gdo/la site, when a new event is created or when changes are saved I get a CAPTCHA error. The CAPTCHA form field does not appear until after I click save. Any idea as to why it is hidden and then appears when the error has occurred? Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
