Building a valuable business with Drupal
We are working with a partner to build a web application that we believe clearly answers a need and is a great business idea, although that does remain to be seen. We use Drupal for most of our web application development but we have not been involved in a project where the aim is clearly to build an application based on an idea that would then be sold at profit.
The idea is Business to Consumer and has a clear revenue model.
Based on this core aim of selling the business, I'm wondering about people's experience of using Drupal as a basis for a valuable business. Particularly:

Hey there all...
Our Drupalistas Study Group tripled in size this last round (from 5 to 15 !! :) ). We are not a big group, but we ARE having a good time learning Drupal in quick, bite-sized chunks. It has been loads of fun. So much fun, in fact, we are starting another "track" of learning.

There are many Web sites and tools for authoring textbooks: iBooks Author, Flat World Knowledge, etc. Good tech, but there's a fundamental flaw in their specs. They're based on an obsolete view of learning.
Education researchers have shown how we can help students learn STEM skills (STEM: science, tech, engineering and math). Deep learning, formative feedback, other things. We need to redesign authoring software based on these research findings.

Do you own or help manage a company or organization that uses Drupal? Does your team depend on professional Drupal service providers in the Greater Los Angeles Area? Have you and your projects been affected by a shortage of Drupal development and theming talent?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then consider coming to our first-ever Drupal Jobs Summit from 7-9pm on Monday, January 28, 2013. There is no charge for this event. It is open to any and all companies and organizations who qualify, by:
- Hosting any Drupal meetups, trainings or other Drupal community events, including Frontend Drupal, High Performance Drupal, Downtown Los Angeles Drupal, LA Drupal, and so on;
- Sponsoring or exhibiting at any of the Los Angeles Drupal job fairs, including this month's Drupal Job Fair on Monday, January 28th.
Hosting a meetup at your office qualifies you for this event. Buying pizza at a meetup, while appreciated, does not. If you do not meet the above qualifications, contact us at jobs-jan28summit@droplabs.net with a request to attend.
This is a roll-up-your-sleeves working meeting and we will be meeting one another (many for the first time) and discussing the following topics:
- Building a healthy marketplace and business community of colleagues and potential partners;
- Getting the most out of our recruiting and marketing dollar;
- What we're doing now to staff up, from local recruiting and in-house training to outsourcing and hiring out-of-town or overseas;
- Identifying the skills, job titles and qualifications of desirable candidates, employees and vendors;
- Workshops, trainings and other programs that most or all of us can get behind in order to solve our business needs.
We'll have an open bar and cocktails will be served.

UK Cookie Law - are there now thousands of "illegal" Drupal 6 sites in the UK?
Drupal 6 tends to set an anonymous cookie by default. I recently did a quick check of UK sites and found many which are indeed setting cookies but don't have one of the available compliance modules installed. From my understanding of the law, the standard D6 anonymous cookie may be exempt if it could be proven that:
-
it is required for proper use of the site (probably not the case) and
-
isn't used in a way that would identify the user on returning to the site such that displayed contained would be customised for them in some way.

Five reasons that you should go with VPS
VPS hosting or Virtual Private Server is a bridge between the dedicated and shared hosting. In VPS there is a partitioning of a server computer into multiple servers, each having its own independent operating system. The businesses requiring powerful web hosting solutions for them VPS is like an advent. With VPS hosting you will get the advantages of both dedicated and shared hosting. VPS hosting is cheaper than dedicated hosting.

Ever wanted a place where you could simply offer to pay to get something you need in Drupal done?
Please donate to make that place. (Yes, it's using a different crowdfunding platform, one that really lacks features for coordination, but is passing on all money raised -- if we reach the minimum -- without even deducting credit card fees.)
And spread this link! http://tilt.tc/usLL Is there enough interest in community funding of Drupal software to fund the software to coordinate this-- in just a few days? Also, if you are available to work on this project in DrupalCon Denver, we've got a DrupalCon ticket for you! Or if you're interested in working on this later, contact me for that, too!
Read moreDrupal-centric DBA - referrals
I am working with a client on an RFP response and would like to include as a potential resource a DBA, ideally with some Drupal experience. We're looking at a large and relatively complex integration of a number of legacy systems on both Postgres and MySQL, and it would be handy to have a multi-talented DB guru to help craft queries and generally support an ETL to Drupal.
I'm not posting this under Jobs since it's not a definite gig per se, but if you have a recommendation for someone (or are that someone yourself) and would like more info, please get in touch privately.

Read moreCreate a new "Jobs" group on g.d.o?
Currently groups.drupal.org has a "Job" content type available for content creators to use.
Due to the number of organizations looking to do hiring, the availability of this content type has resulted in an increasing number of Job content type nodes being posted into groups here where job postings reduce the effectiveness / usefulness of the group. Frequently (almost always?) the job postings are for positions that have very little to do with the subject matter of the group.
Read moreA place for jobs?
I often come across job postings that are in inappropriate groups and don't know where to stick them. Usually I stick them here but I wonder if that's wanted? This is a discussion group, not just a dumping ground for jobs.
I'm wondering if making a group "Marketplace" or some such would be a better idea? Then we would have a group that's purely for seeking and selling your Drupal services and not intended for discussion.
Or shall I just continue dumping them here? Am I making an issue where there is none?
Michelle
