Welcome potential Google Summer of Code 2012 students and mentors!
SoC 2012 Announcements from Google.
If you already know what you want to do just create a discussion.
Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers post-secondary student developers ages 18 and older stipends to write code for various open source software projects. We have worked with open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund projects over a three month period. Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought together over 6000 successful student participants and over 3000 mentors from over 100 countries worldwide, all for the love of code. Through Google Summer of Code, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios and the opportunity for employment in areas related to their academic pursuits. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers. Best of all, more source code is created and released for the use and benefit of all.
This group is for posting and discussing GSoC project ideas, as well as for general conversation that relates to the SoC. You can also get help on the #drupal-contribute IRC channel on freenode (irc://irc.freenode.net/drupal-contribute).
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SUBMIT PROJECT IDEAS OR TO RE-SUBMIT IDEAS FROM LAST YEAR!
Finally, read HOWTO: Write a Summer of Code application.

Synopsis
Drupal image handling and all image related contributed modules assumes that all images are in some bitmap format but forgets about vector graphics. Read moreContent Sorting Module - User Views based
Drupal is all about viewing contents and ways to mange to , but users are also an integral part . So the main idea is to store no of times each user has been to a page (or node) and make content that is viewed more often by user promoted to the higher weights in the website. this would help article (or posts ) with greater interest among the people to appear more significantly in the web site. it will store various variables which will help to sort contents in block regions based on various aspects such most recent , most visited etc .

Abstract:
This project aims to write a materialization plugin for Views. It creates a "materialized view" for a "view", and then materialize the results into temporary tables. And then, the following Views calls would be redirected to the materialized view. The changes would be made to the materialized view, when data in the view changes (or sometimes even drop the entire materialized view)
[GSoC Proposal] Personal Identity Verification for Drupal
Develop a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) module that could be implemented into the Drupal CMS platform to allow for two-factor authentication using a Smart Card (SC) or US Government Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC) card for verification and access to secure website environments.
There was once sandbox-related activity found here http://drupal.org/sandbox/larquin/1292622 , but it seems to have been abandoned.

Read more[GSoC Proposal] Amazon Mechanical Turk Integration with Drupal
The Amazon Mechanical Turk (Mturk) is a Amazon Web Service that allows site owners to outsource tasks requiring human intelligence at relatively low cost. Mturk may be used for a wide range of purposes including image labeling, transcription, categorization, and spam filtering in various fields and industries not limited to e-commerce, research, online community, social networking. In order for Drupal to fully utilize Mturk, I propose designing an easy to install module to work with Mturk from the Drupal interface.

Abstract
Although Drupal has switched to Git for its Version Control needs for about an year, yet the workflow is by and far patch based, when it comes to collaborating. While some choose the path of creating sandboxes and then create an issue in the main project, yet we are far from using the power of distributed workflow that Git offers us. The following proposal aims at providing the base of using Git-like workflow while collaborating on projects.
Previous Discussion(Summary)
The detailed description of repo-families can be found here[2].

Drupal as a print CMS using Scribus
Steve Yelvington started a discussion about using Drupal as a print CMS back in 2006 at http://groups.drupal.org/node/2018. Scribus was mentioned as one possible layout package. In 2009, some work was done as a proof of concept by Mariusz Słonina at http://wiki.scribus.net/canvas/Drupal_integration but I don't think it was ever finished. Hendrik Grahl has written about interfacing Scribus to a CMS at his blog, http://www.grahl.ch/category/posts/scribus.

Site Page Emailer
In this module we have to make a drop down of every title and post to allow for the body of a sites page or a link to be emailed to recipients on the fly, from the sites page.
A dropdown menu in a site with the titles of all child posts under the current
page and a text field for an email address that you want to send the page to and a button to send. It might be possible to embed the HTML of the page directly into the email, so all formatting, pictures, etc are preserved. Not sure. If not, perhaps just a short note and a link to the page itself.
