Open Calais or Drupal Taxonomy

I am building a site around musical instruments such as Piano, Guitar, Drums, etc. Basically content will be written about the instrument and categorized by state. So the thought was to build the taxonomy with US sates under each state have all the musical instrument categories mention above. While daunting I think this was achievable. Now the requirements are to go down to the city level so end users can read and subscribe to say articles written about guitar in Phoenix, AZ. The city requirements take this to an entirely new level.

BrainStorming about how Drupal is able to "compete" with community product usable out of the box

Start:
2010-08-25 17:15 - 18:00 Europe/Copenhagen
Event type:
User group meeting

Community products usable out of the box : How is Drupal able to "compete"?
BrainStorming session Monday 3:00 to 4:00 pm Copenhagen time, Register at http://groups.drupal.org/node/88459)

Drupal has now at least two community products usable out of the box. http://commons.acquia.com & http://openatrium.com
(Edit 20100822) http://drupal.org/project/voicebox targeting targets community media
+ facebook like feature http://sndemo.dev3.webenabled.net/node/1

There is a need to see how those projects compare and are able to "compete" with non-Drupal products.

Best way to do a frontpage

We've been struggling getting our homepage correctly done. Unsure what needs to be there and what not as well as older posts vanish and the only to find them is through the archives.

Can anyone explain the best way or your way of doing your online news site's frontpage?

iso-8859-1 standard RSS feed...?

How do I make an RSS feed encode using iso-8859-1 standard instead of utf-8?

Also, does someone know how to place the [img src] attribute from the feed description into a separate tag/attribute?

I'm trying to prepare an RSS feed for an iPhone app and they need the RSS formatted this way.

Here is a link to a current feed: http://www.scvbj.com/rss/articles/coverstory

Thank you very much.

Looking for some ideas on how to sort stories

Hi, I am in the process of making an online newspaper. What Im hoping to be able to do is have stories fed into my site from The Associated Press. Assuming I figure a way of how to do that I will need a way to properly display the stories. Currently (for my test stories) I use views to sort the articles by date posted in descending order. This will work to keep my content fresh and display the most current stories, but I want the "most important" most recent story to be at the top of the list.

Breadcrumbs and News websites

Hi all,

We have a couple of sections on our newspaper website (the ordinary News, Sports, etc.), and I was wondering how to incorporate those with our breadcrumbs. I also wanted to ask how one should go about using breadcrumbs in a news website.

Thanks,

narsil351

How do I create secondary stripped down node page of my content?

I need to create an RSS feed that links to my current articles but not to the current pages, but to a stripped down version of the same article (without all the blocks, ads, and other content).

The feed is going to be used for an iPhone app.

Is this possible?

Thank you,
Joe

New version of the Google Ad Manager module

Hello,

I have to write this post to introduce the 2.x branch of Google Ad Manager module because it is very convenient and handy even for the complex case.

The old version of GAM (and its brother, OpenAds) create a block for each ads slot. It was practical, but only for small sites. When you have about a few dozens of ad slots, and you want to use those blocks in Panels, or you want to place different blocks in the same place (depend on in which section user is)... it is a nightmare.

Best way to organize blogs on the newspaper site

What is the best way to organize blogs on the newspaper site?

Media companies being different beings have a different set of requrements:

  • multi-user blogs (many users can post to one blog, and no other blogs)
  • site-wide "web editors" that have ability to change any post on any blog

At the moment, it looks like Organic Groups is the only solution.

Have anybody done anything like that?

Create magazine structure, articles organised by issue

Hi there

I'm trying to do something I thought was pretty simple - organise content by issue.

I've got as far as having node types of issue and article.

I've created taxonomy of issues and assigned articles to issues.

I could create a view by filtering article nodes for the issue number but then id have to create a new view everytime i created an issue which i guess isn't that efficient?

So how do i go about it? do i have to put something in a custom template?

I thought I might be able to find a tutorial on this but my googling skills have let me down!

Why two college newspapers dumped their proprietary Web systems

From the Chronicle of Higher Education comes this tale: "For College Newspapers, Prepackaged Online Versions Are Yesterday's News." The Daily Texan at the University of Texas switched from a proprietary system to Drupal, and the Maneater at the University of Missouri switched to Django.

Integrating Newsbank archives into a local Newspaper Drupal site?

I'm starting the process of adding the Newsbank archive for a local newspaper to their drupal site. Has anyone done this? I'm interested in how you did it and what problems you ran into.

It would be easy enough to put everything in a frame, but I'd like the searches and archives to be a bit more integrated and transparent to the user.

Best Way to Move From Dev to Live Site?

We've been developing our site on a dev subdomain, populating the ProsePoint database with stories. We want to transfer the contents of that database to our live site. What is the best way? I've been considering the backup-and-migrate module. What are the steps I need to take to accomplish this? Thanks in advance.

Is the a way to embed blocks from my drupal site to another site (drupal or otherwise)?

Is the a way to embed blocks from my drupal site to another site (drupal or otherwise)?

For example, if I had a block on my site that displayed a slideshow of contributed photos (using views slideshow) is there some way for me to allow others to embed it into their sites using embed code, similarly to how Youtube allows us to embed their videos?

Thanks,
Joe

Easiest way to charge for individual stories in "Archive" workflow status?

Our newspaper is planning to go to a partial pay wall in a few months; one of the options we are considering is charging for archives.

Archived stories are defined as those that have the "Archive" workflow status assigned to them (we have a Rule set up that sends stories from Public status to Archive status after seven days).

At the moment, registered (authenticated, logged-in) users can read archived stories, and there is no cost for registration.

What would be the simplest way to charge per story for access to archived stories?

Creating section pages

I would like to know from others what they use or how they create section home pages.

I gather one of these three would be fine: Sections, Composite, Panels.

I would like to try out panels, but the documentation seems to be quite inadequate.

Looking for Drupal training in London/SE England especially for building a newspaper site and/or conditional presentation of content depending on which page your on

I'm seriously considering investing in myself by buying some training, taking a few days off my job and going on a course for such things. I've done a bit of google searching but I thought I'd ask here for recommendations, durations, price guides/ranges.
