Creating a hierarchical education website - is there a best practise?

Hi there

I'm replacing our current website with a Drupal-based one. I am a Drupal newb. In some ways I'd like to use WordPress but Drupal appears to beat it hands down in terms of being a powerful CMS.

The one thing I'm struggling on (at this moment!) is the decision on how to handle the basic structure of the website - do I do it through a book? Do I use taxonomies? Or something else?

Personal portfolios in Drupal and interoperability

Is anybody out there using Drupal for building e-portfolios?

I was at a Mahara conference recently and attending a talk about LEAP2A (http://wiki.cetis.ac.uk/LEAP2A_specification) a new interoperability spec. Efforts to make it compatible with RDFa are underway and I was wondering if anybody from the Drupal side would be interested in joining in the discussion.

Creating Campus Tour on Drupal

Would like to hear from anyone who has used Drupal to create a campus tour for your college or university. We are getting ready to revamp our dusty old online tour, and I'm trying to think of an interesting way to use Drupal to accomplish this. I'm thinking along the lines of a slideshow but with interactivity (e.g., "click here to see a video about this facility").

DrupalCon Paris -- Education Sessions and BoF

Hello, all,

There are three education-related sessions currently proposed for DrupalCon Paris -- if these are sessions you would like to attend, head on over to the site and vote on them. The rating/voting period is currently set to close on July 12 (which seems short to me, given that the proposal deadline was the 8th, but that's a different story).

The sessions are:

Joint effort on a D6 SCORM API

I'm been working on sanduhrs code (http://groups.drupal.org/node/13452) for Drupal 6.

It's far from complete, but is a second step. CMI Datamodel is implemented and we have a conformant RTE. I'm missing the API/Session communication in order to get Claude's test script fully successful.

Anyone interested on this? I'm going to be working on this for the next weeks and we could get something faster if we join forces!

Regards,

Modules recommendations/sanity check for edu. group site

Hi,

I am building a Drupal 6 website for my amateur radio emergency service club. One of our key missions is training (educating) others, so I am trying to build a useful online resource for our members, and others who visit our site. I have built several stand alone drupal sites, before but am now branching out into group sites. In this case we have several groups linked by location (e.g. a specific city) or interest. I need advice in planning a few key features.

Study groups?

How have people been supporting informal study groups, where students self-organize? What has worked well?

Tagging comments?

Hello!

I'm curious - is there a good (and ideally easy) way to incorporate tagging of comments?

I'm thinking D6 here. Is node comment a good way to go? the only way to go?

Has anyone been down a similar road before? Any pitfalls?

Looking forward to any tips you might have!

Thanks!

Specs for a learning exercise module

I'm working on a site that will have lessons on HTML, CSS and such. Each lesson will be like this:

Only local images are allowed.

I'm planning on writing a Drupal module to manage the exercises. Any feedback?

Goals

Each exercise will have:

  • Title, e.g., Create a nav bar.

  • Description. Include link to a solution.

  • Learner's solution. Each learner will enter the text of a solution. Often it will just be a URL.

Rules Module with LDAP Integration Module

My Scenario: I have a triggered rule set up with an Event type of "User account has been created." The trigger has a condition of "User has Role." The argument is a "registered user", and the role is a "teacher."

I also have ldap setup to allow the teachers to login.

My problem: when a teacher first logs in (for instance), they are in the correct group according to LDAP, but the "User has Role" inside of the rules module doesn't recognize this, therefore the trigger/action never happens.

Boost module

Static pages for University home pages (especially emergency info pages) was a point of discussion on some recent UWEBD listserv posts.

I came across the Boost module tonight. http://drupal.org/project/boost. Looks like it may help Universities which run Drupal with performance.

Let me know your thoughts or if you have tried it..

Thanks

Use Drupal? In a University? Want to join forces?

I've been talking to a few University / College types lately and been asking them one thing -- If a group existed that was dedicated towards Drupal for Universities, would you be interested? Thus far the few that we've pitched this idea to have been very receptive. I posted recently about this idea of a Drupal for Universities Consortium to try and get some feedback / discussion from the rest of the community.

Site about Web development, based on learning research

Hi,

I'm creating a site to help people learn how to be a Weber, that is, someone who gets paid to do Web work.

The site's design is informed by learning research, particularly constructivism and phenomenography. That's where the site's value proposition comes from: lessons designed to help humans learn effectively and efficiently.

I wrote a short document on the design, showing how I derived the design by joining learner goals and learning theory. If anyone's interested, I'd like to get some feedback on the ideas. The site is still very much a work-in-progress.

Usefulness of an integration of Mediabird Study Notes into Drupal?

Hello everyone,

I am the co-founder of the Mediabird Study Notes software, which is an extension to existing LMS.

Mediabird is a collaborative online notepad that allows small study groups to collaboratively work on shared notes at any time. It is not only possible to extend notes or edit them at the same time but in particular Mediabird allows users to annotate notes and ask questions about them. With that respect, Mediabird combines the ideas of a wiki and of a forum but is not as public as a wiki and relates questions to the notes rather than separating them as done in a forum.

Curriculum map in Drupal

I migrated our school curriculum map from a custom system I authored into Drupal. This allows us to ensure the longevity of this web site resource, take advantage of Drupal's strengths in structuring content storage and display, and provide teachers with a very usable editing interface. The curriculum map stores over a thousands nodes and can be added to an existing Drupal site. This article assumes familiarity with Drupal 6 views, content construction kit, blocks, and very basic custom function programming. This isn't a step-by-step tutorial (maybe one day).

Adding a default page for a teacher and giving only their user the ability to modify it.

I was wondering if anyone knew a way to make the following happen.

  1. When a new user is created, add them a default page that says something like, "Coming soon..."
  2. Set a specified url for that link.
  3. Allow only that user that is created to modify it.

If anyone has any insight in this issue, it would be greatly appreciated.
