Drupal Camp Alberta 2008

After a short discussion with the powers that be at the University of Lethbridge, I have full approval to host Drupal Camp Alberta 2008 in June or early July.

Our facilities are top notch http://www.uleth.ca/conference/ (open WIFI, theatres, breakout rooms, entertainment and fitness facilities, AND campus housing summer rentals) - so we are going to take the bull by the horns and spread the word.

I know the organizers for DCV08 put it together at the speed of light, we are going to follow suit.

Looking for feedback on my site

Thanks to all those who have been helping me along the way so far.

If you can, take a look at my site at www.elementalsource.com/drupal. I'm building it little by little. The school year is ending, which means more time to devote to the site, but also no student interaction for the summer. I hope to build my Teacher stuff section this summer (nothing there right now) -- resources on 21st century skills, curriculum, technology integration, etc.

Looking into OG side projects

I'm redo'ing our infrastructure and currently looking into Organic Groups as the major solution to our multi-site, distributed / replicated user accounts, EVIL monster that I have going at the moment :). So, that in mind, I'd like to move from 1 install base, 1 database per course to 1 central database for all of our course infrastructure.

Local Publishing Platform and Regional Aggregation Hub

Edit, July 10 This proposal has been passed along to the Knight Foundation for consideration: http://drupal.org/node/281048 End Edit

This project will create two complementary sites: a Local Publishing Platform paired with a Regional Aggregation Hub.

The Publishing Platform will support a range of activities, from a K12 school magazine, a community paper, a writing project (something like the National Writing Project or Youth Radio), a college paper, etc.

easy way to upload photos into posts?

I'm looking for an "easy-peasy" way to put photos into posts. Since I work mostly with middle school students, it's got to be pretty simple. They're all used to finding a browse button, and hitting upload or something similar.

I have tried the image_assist module, the image module, and the IMCE module. All with TinyMCE editor. The closest one is the ICME, but that still takes about 3 more steps than I'd like.

I'm posting here because I figured some here would understand the middle school mind!

I'm using Drupal 5.7.

Thanks!

School Management Solution

We are yet planning a school management solution for a school in India. We use Drupal for our school and alumni sites.

Here is a list of benefits and functionality we are looking at. Is this doable with Drupal or will we need a proprietary solution. Are there any open source solutions for this use case?

1.An interactive platform for all entities and stakeholders viz. Students, Parents, Teachers, Management, Administrators and the Alumni of the school.
2.connects all the departments of an institution and knits them into a complete whole

Drupal presence at NECC?

There's a possibility I may be at the upcoming NECC conference and I was wondering if there was anyone else attending? This might be a good venue to promote Drupal -- I'm looking at you billfitzgerald ;-)

Anyone else going? Possible bird of feather meet-up or something grander?

Arguments for and against using Drupal

Hello, all,

I wanted to get some feedback from the group regarding rolling Drupal within your school/organization, and begin creating a resource page for other people looking to introduce Drupal into their school/organization.

What are the common arguments in favor of using Drupal?

What arguments have people encountered against using Drupal?

What resources/arguments have been helpful overcoming concerns about using Drupal?

aggregating starred items from google reader?

Hoping I haven't worn out my welcome yet....

Has anyone ever successfully made a block with their starred items from GR? I'm fiddling with the Aggregator and haven't been able to make it work. I get "because of error "mismatched tag" on line 70." Any suggestions?

TIA.

Embedding youtube in a blog post?

I'm trying to embed a great new video concerning 21st century education on my blog on my drupal site. I did some research and found someone saying if you disable rich text format and allow the , , and tags in filtered html, it should work.

But it's not. Can this only be done via a particular module? I'm using Drupal 5.7.

Thanks in advance.

Drupal and eportfolios?

I'm doing some long-range planning/thinking and wondering if anyone has any ideas or suggestions for how to use Drupal for an eportfolio.

Since I'm at the beginning stages of this brainstorming, by eportfolio I mean -- an online spot where a student can blog (reflect), have rss feeds, photos, video, and display their best work. I see it as an ongoing process, so the blog will be a place where they can reflect on their work as they do it. I'm inspired by the moment by this blog post http://wpmued.org/2008/05/07/this-ain%E2%80%99t-yo-mama%E2%80%99s-e-portfolio-part-1/.

Blog entries creating groups?

I'm sure it's some newbie mistake, but students in groups who write blog entries are also creating groups with that blog entry. So their post is listed in the groups directory.

What am I doing wrong?

Adams 12 Five Star Schools (K-12) Case Study

Adams 12 Five Star Schools is very pleased to announce our newly-redesigned, SQL Server-powered Drupal Web site! Our site exemplifies the power and flexibility of Drupal. It is also speaks to the quality of community that helps develop, instruct, and support the Drupal project. Without this exceptional and active community, our site would not have been possible. We're continually working to improve our site and welcome your feedback. (Sorry for the delay, I had promised this write up a while ago but have just now had the time to put it together).

Logout after X minutes of inactivity?

I'm using Drupal 5.7 for my classes. Since much of the use occurs in a shared computer lab, is there any way in the settings to terminate a user's login after a while? I've done some searching and can't find any easy fix.

The problem is that a user logging on from a computer will be logged in automatically as the user who sat at that computer previously, unless they logged out. I realize that it's good practice to log out, but we're talking about middle schoolers here.

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Student and parent user management

I am about ready to go live with the portion of my site that allows students and parents and teachers to login. I am using the User Import module to import these users, but I have yet to find any module that allows an admin to delete large amounts of users at a time. For example: I picture needing to delete "Class of 2008" along with their parents at the end of the school year. The User menu allows you to filter off of role, permission, or status but not anything like group (og) or a hidden profile_value or something.

What solutions have you found that do this?
