Drupal noob .... -ish

Hello everyone! My name is Roger ... (why does this feel like an AA intro? ) .... and I've sporadically used Drupal over the course of 5ive years or so to assist a non-profit organization I belong to, as well as other side-interests not primary to my day-to-day job. By day I'm a database developer for a Fortune 500 company (not as glorious as it reads here), and I'm one of those people whose experiences are a mile wide and a foot deep. I have a theoretical understanding of programming and databases that far exceeds my coding skills, but I'm looking to change that a bit using Drupal.

Meeting Topic: What's your "Story"? (Agilelistically speaking)

In my "Agile" project management world, I have replaced the word "Story" with Challenge.

Since I have only attended 3 or 4 meetings over the last 2 years, I was wondering if you have ever tried/considered having a member (or members) present what I would call the challenge of the month?

This could be anything from a Drupal Internalists "How do we help get Drupal 8 completed?" to a novice asking "How do I do/fix this in Drupal?"

Case Study: Madeincrossfit.com, from WordPress to Drupal

Hi all and happy holidays!

In this post I will explain how I built a responsive website for a local Crossfit gym and how I migrated the old WordPress blog to Drupal.

The Background Story:

Madeincrossfit.com was originally a WordPress site hosted in WordPress.com with over 100 unique visits per day. The WODs page which included a list of daily workout routines was the most viewed page.

New user

Hello everyone,

My name is Silver. I am new to Drupal but hope to learn as much as possible from events, books, sites and others.

I have experience in the IT field in support, classroom, software development. I am trying to get more involved in web development so this is how I came to know and learn more about Drupal.

My hope is to be a student and then offer my experiences to all as I go down this new, winding path.

D8 Snappy?

I just discovered Snappy https://github.com/KnpLabs/snappy

"a PHP5 library allowing thumbnail, snapshot or PDF generation from a url or a html page. It uses the excellent webkit-based wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage available on OSX, linux, windows."

I'm interested in learning to create Drupal 8 modules and was wondering if people thought it was a good idea to implement Snappy as a D8 module so that a link field could be rendered as an image or pdf, similar to https://drupal.org/project/pagepeeker and https://drupal.org/project/phantomjs_capture ?

New to Phoenix, not new to Drupal

Hi I'm Jon Heaton. I've been using Drupal since Drupal 5. With my current job I am converting a large company intranet portal to Drupal from a custom framework. I've designed dozens of Drupal sites and am intimately familiar with the templating system, building custom modules, using Views, Panels, and am just getting into Rules. I am also very familiar with the entity system and am looking forward to the iSymphony integration and web services initiative coming to core. I have contributed 1 patch to core in Drupal 7. Looking to do more but need to get better familiar with Git.

Would like to relocate to the Phoenix area

I'm considering relocating my family to the Phoenix area and am interested to know about Drupal opportunities in the area. I currently live in a rural area of Idaho and am sick of the cold winters. I have been working remotely as a freelancer and contractor for various companies around the U.S., but would love to settle down with a local employer in the Phoenix area.

I'd like to know what it's like to be a Drupal developer living in and around Phoenix. How prevalent is Drupal in Phoenix? Do opportunities abound, or are they far and few? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I consider myself a Drupal newbie...

Hi Everyone,

My name is Dawn Rae Brown and I consider myself a Drupal newbie...I inherited a neglected Drupal install from a co-worker a little over a year ago, so I had to learn Drupal quickly. I've done a few updates and wrote a few hooks, but I still feel like I barely know what I'm doing. Currently, we're running one core install with around 11 sites on it. I went to Drupal Camp at ASU and had lots of fun and realized what a great community Drupal has and I want to become more active!

My Introduction

Hey, everyone. I got to Drupal in a very round-about way as I am not a developer. I am part of a task force at work that created a campaign. Our marketing company designed a basic WordPress site for us but I wasn't comfortable being the administrator, not having built it from scratch and not knowing the exact functionality. Therefore, I created my own WordPress site for the campaign and we went with that. Unfortunately, the dreams I have for the campaign and the website that accompanies it are greater than I feel WordPress will allow me to accomplish.

Possible Change in PHXDUG Meetup Place and Time

Kevin Wall and I have been discussing possible changes to the regularly scheduled Phoenix Drupal Users Group Meetup place and time, and we wanted to open it up for general discussion.

First, we're considering moving the Meetup location further South. I understand that the ASU Drupal Users Group hasn't been meeting regularly of late and they might like to drop in on ours, if it was a little more centrally located. There are also a number of us who would like to spend less time getting to and from the meeting. (For example, I spend 45 minutes coming up from Chandler to North Scottsdale.)

Drupal 7 was released today, and release parties are being planned world-wide on Friday. We should make sure Phoenix and Arizona State University are on the map by throwing a party ourselves! Let's talk about a good place to have it, and if you or your organization have already started planning one, toss in any ideas you might have. It might be fun to mix things up a bit and meet somewhere new. Any ideas?

Fun with Drupal Make

After the discussion on KWALL's standard module set, I decided I wanted an easier way to get them in place. I mean, it's not really that hard to type drush dl module1 module2 module3 ad_nauseum..., but where am I going to keep a text file of a list of modules to paste into that command? I decided I'd (finally) build a Drush Make file to take care of all of it. I thought I'd share what I came up with.

Questions about choosing the right faceted search setup

Hi:

Introduction

Been lurking a bit on the site, figured it was time to take the plunge. :-)
I came to the Phoenix area in September 2008 to start a new life as a web developer. I used to be a university biochemistry lecturer, but I've gotten over that. I stated by migrating an existing site from ColdFusion to PHP/MySQL and adding to its capabilities. I'm pretty new to Drupal, having started trying to add even more new functions with Drupal since Oct. 2009. I've gotten over that initial two-month feeling of beating my head against the wall. We hope to do a beta-testing launch by the end of February.

(Re)Introduction

Hello, all. I lived in the East Valley for 7 years, but I've been back in Idaho for the past 6 months. However, I've finally figured out once-and-for-all that I don't like Idaho winters, and my family and I will be moving back at the end of January (2010).

I've been doing PHP development, mostly on LAMP, for the past 12 years, the past two-and-a-half of which have been almost exclusively Drupal. I love Drupal! I don't want to go back to general development, so I'm looking around for jobs that include Drupal, not just PHP. (So if you know of any...)

I look forward to any events or meet-ups happening in the near future.

I'm a newbie to the Drupal community

I'm a newbie to the Drupal community. I have several programmer friends who love the community and work within. They all moved out of state and I never sat down with them when they were here to fully try to understand Drupal more. In fact I was just the designer not the programmer but now I want to be more the designer/programmer and I have questions about Drupal and would really like to pick a friend's brain. I need someone to talk to on phone or person to inspire and help me get into the Drupal world.

Need an East Valley/Ahwatukee developer

I'm bummed that I was unable to make the recent Meetup at Macayo's. But I got swamped with my current project… moving to Taipei. :-)

If there’s one thing I'm disappointed in myself for, its that I never managed to get a regular meetup going here in Phoenix. I am pleased that Amanda and Josh appear to be doing what I did not. :-) Hopefully, the Phoenix Metro group will keep meeting and discussing my favorite CMS. And even though I never attended a PHX Metro meetup, I'm really glad I was able to meet the ASUDUG group! They are awesome!

New member from Mesa

Hi everyone, My name is Maximo Mena; I live in Mesa and go to ASU Polytechnic. Inspired by my uncle, who built a web portal for his hometown, I decided to get really good at web design and development. With the help of w3schools.com and many other tutorials, I taught myself how to hand code PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Initially I used to create small web sites from scratch, but I found myself spending a great deal of time programming basic functionality such as user authentication. In other words I was reinventing the wheel.
